SDMB 2012 NFL Mock Draft!!!

70Jacksonville
Alfonzo Dennard, CB
Nebraska

If Sanu fell, I would have given real thought to taking another weapon for Gabbert. But he didn’t, so they take help for the secondary.

Gonna bang out 3 quick picks.

71. Buffalo Bills
Chase Minnifield
CB, Virginia

**72. Miami Dolphins
Brian Quick
WR, Appalachian State

  1. Miami Dolphins
    Jeff Allen
    OT, Illinois**

Just drafted 3 guys that were all at the top of my board for the Bears. I’ll come back later and give a summary when I’m home from dinner.

Is it Beef and the Chiefs who are next? Because I’m all set with my pick, and I’d have to hunt him down and make him watch every second of every Browns lostt and every second of every Steeler win, including the Super Bowls, if he takes my guy.

Shit, my bad. Give me a minute to figure out who Hamlet wants.

He’s after Drew Butler. Don’t let him escape.

I want Bryan Anger, because, well that’s a pretty cool football name. Too bad he’s not as angry as Pat Angerer, because having those two on the same team would amuse me to no end.

I can’t figure out who Hamlet wants.

Anyway.

  1. Kansas City Chiefs
    Brandon Washington
    G, Miami

The chiefs interior needs to be shored up and some of their guys are coming into contract years and may be let go. They need to start grooming some interior linemen, or at least get some versatile backups - Washington can play G or OT in a pinch.

Thank God.

I’ve been watching the late second early third round picks go by with great trepidation. Since passing on Luke Kuechly for boom or bust Quinton Coples in the first round, and then ignoring the LB position again in the second to grab another D Lineman (I do think that great linemen can make linebackers look better), I’ve had one guy I was sure was going to be gone by the time Seattle got to pick in the third round. He’s the third best player at a position of desperate need for Seattle.

He’s had nice production (98 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 int’s), great speed (fastest time in the 40 for linebackers in 12 years), dependable tackler, versatile (8.5 sacks last year at OLB), and has very good instincts. He’s often around the ball, and though he can be a bit of a liability in coverage against bigger TE’s, he’s pretty solid otherwise. He’s the PAC 12’s defensive player of the year, and is built like a rock. He’s a bit too short (only 5’11 1/4), but he is also a damn good football player (and a bit of a character risk to be honest). And Seattle, after waiting on grabbing a linebacker, is thrilled to have

  1. Seattle Seahawks
    Mychael Kendricks, LB, California

(although I’m thrilled how the draft worked out for Seattle, I think it would have been better to have grabbed Kuechly, Reyes, and Vinny Curry, but I really didn’t think Curry would last this long)

Who the seahawks draft in the third round of a pretend draft seems very important to you.

I wouldn’t really have made you watch all those Browns’ loses and Steelers’ wins. Actually, I’d be hard pressed to find a more painful punishment than making you be a Browns’ fan. That and I really like football.

I’m going to strike first and take you right to Appalacia West in middle pennsylvania. We’ll go to a sheep brothel and I’m going to yell “THIS GUY THINKS REFS FAVOR THE STEELERS!” and watch as they all descend upon you with their rapey ways.

There’s no reason for mocking between us, Hamlet. I happen to consider you one of my allies on the board in fighting the great posse of evil hilljacks that have a false persecution complex that are Steeler fans.

C’mon Beef. We both know that could never happen. First, you couldn’t pull enough Steeler fans off their sister/brothers to make a difference. Second, I’d just have to drop a box of Twinkies and the remaining ones would either kill each other over sugared fat or die after their 450 pound bodies finally give up the ghost. And Third, I’d only have to ask them to count to 21 and they’d be sitting down, taking off their shoes and frowning and drooling on themselves when they ran out of finger and toes.

Apology accepted!

I gave Omni the proxies for a reason… Guess he’s still out. I like the Kendricks pick, BTW.

I’ll try to give explanations for these picks tomorrow. Anyway, the Houston Texans pick:

#76
Josh Chapman, NT, Alabama. Chapman sets up better as a 0-technique, NT than Thompson, so I’ve read.

The New York Jets pick:

#77
Marvin Jones, WR, Cal.

I’m on my phone here, so i’ll format and comment when I get home.

#78 - San Diego
George Iloka, Safety, Boise St.

The Bears got themselves a CB in the 1st round and a DE in the 2nd, going heavy on defense. With the third pick they want to look at BPA but it’s tough not to shade towards the offense. They came into the draft expecting to be looking at WRs and OLS and two guys high on their board just got drafted meaning there’s a bit of a scramble on where to go. As much as I’d love to address the OL here with this pick the position has been decimated and any pick here would be considered a reach for need. There’s a couple WRs who I like a lot but might be available in the 4th round. Of course the Bears shipped away their 4th round pick making it now or never.

79. Chicago Bears
Tommy Streeter
WR, Miami

To go back one pick…
78. San Diego Chargers
George Iloka
S, Boise State

When it comes to safeties in this draft, there’s Barron, a big drop to Harrison Smith, and then a huge drop to anyone else. But if the Chargers can’t get either of those guys, they’d still be happy to get Iloka later in the third. Most sites have him listed as a free safety, and with All-Pro Eric Weddle, it’s obviously strong safety that they need. But the Bolts typically run a system where their two safeties are asked to both be able to handle both jobs from one play to another. And what they really need is a safety who can handle tight ends - that’s been an enormous problem for them for years, and tight ends are becoming a bigger part of the league than ever. Iloka has the range and speed of a free safety, but at 6’3 1/2 can absolutely stick with most any tight end in the league. Any weakness in his game related to run-stuffing and big-hitting is hopefully offset by his tight end coverage ability.

80. Arizona Cardinals,
Donald Stephenson
OT, Oklahoma

81. Dallas Cowboys
Joe Adams
WR, Arkansas

Adams fills two big holes for the Cowboys, slot receiver, vacated when Laurent Robinson got way too much money from Jacksonville and punt returner, open because all the good ones on the team were starters. He’s a little short and needs to work on some of his fundamentals but is dangerous once the ball is in his hands. Best of all, Jerry will be happy I selected someone from his alma matar.

Oakminster is on the clock, but he mentioned upthread that he thought we should shut it down after 2 rounds. I sent him a PM, but if he hasn’t chimed in in an hour or so I say someone should just go ahead and pick for him.
