SDMB All-Pro Fantasy Football league

I asked him to sign Campbell and include him in the trade package. With Edwards as my backup I had no need of Campbell, so I wasn’t going to sign him. But if I were to trade away Edwards, I would need a second QB. Campbell looked the best to me, so I suggested him.

This trade basically boils down to Steve Smith (NYG) for Trent Edwards plus an upgrade at DEF. I don’t really count Jason Campbell or Dominik Hixon as being part of the deal; they’re just included to keep the roster distributions the same. Hixon looks to be just about worthless, and Campbell was an available free agent, so it’s reasonable to count them both as irrelevant.

At least, that was my thinking during the negotiating to get the deal done. With Hasselback down Beef needed a QB. I don’t begrudge him grabbing Smith off the waiver wire to use as trade bait for a QB. On the contrary, I’d say that’s almost the entire purpose of the waiver wire.

Including the salary cap league I’m in five leagues, so I haven’t been particularly aware of the waiver wire pools in any of them. I almost certainly would have filed claims on both NYG receivers if I had been aware they were available. But then again, I’m happy with the roster I drafted so I was perfectly content to stand pat. This is true in all my leagues, which is why I haven’t been paying close attention to the waiver wire.

I didn’t grab him specifically to trade him. He was worth taking because he improves my roster. I offered about half my roster up for the trade. I would’ve actually rather have gotten rid of one of the other guys, because Smith probably seems like he has the most potential out of my non-starting receivers to have a big year.

Fair enough. My point still stands that I personally view using the waiver wire specifically for trade bait as A-OK.

The caveat I would add is that I think it’s kind of a dick move to use the waiver wire to snag a handcuff away from somebody who just lost their starter to a bad injury.

I sort of intuitively feel this is distasteful, but rationally I tend to think that whether or not you should use a roster spot on a handcuff is an important strategy position (be risky and free up a roster spot - you may get screwed. Go the safe route, you may miss out on a valuable breakout player) , and similarly when to save and when to use your waiver position is part of the strategy, and hence it seems like a valid part of the game.

Agreed.

If you really need the guy, no harm no foul. For example, if I don’t have enough starting RBs to fill out my roster and Matt Forte goes down, I have no problem snatching up Adrian Peterson off the waiver wire. Totally legit.

BUT, if I’m starting, say, MJD and Thomas Jones as the only two RB spots on the roster, my third back is Felix Jones, and Matt Forte goes down, I think signing Adrian Peterson just because he’s now a starter is a dick move. If I sign him for the express purpose of trading him to the guy who owns Matt Forte for, say, a good bench WR, then fine. That’s good gamesmanship, and you aren’t screwing anyone over. That bench receiver is the price you pay for not drafting your handcuff. But if I sign him to rot on my bench just to hurt Forte’s owner, that’s a dick move.

Turned out there were a lot of caveats after all. Hopefully that made sense.

Believe me, I kicked myself plenty for blowing this one when I am first up on waivers. I picked them both up easily in my other league where I am much less desperate for WR talent.

It feels like there have been a lot of changes in depth this season considering it is only Week 3. This should make for some very interesting fantasy playoff teams.

Another week where I have a top 2 projected score according to yahoo, and I’ll probably end up losing. I wonder if my projected score to actual score ratio sucks so much because my players are off to a slow start, or if it’s because yahoo is just fundamentally wrong about their projections and my roster sucks.

I guess the injuries haven’t been kind to me, with my 2nd round pick being out, my 5th round pick missing half+ of the season, and my 8th rounder going down already.

At least Jones-Drew came through for you this week. All Derrick Ward had to do was not entirely suck and catch a few passes out of the backfield as the Bucs scrambled to keep up with the Giants and he could not even pull that off.

I may need to reevaluate some things to catch back up to the middle of the pack next week.

My running backs scored a combined 103.1 points this week… and that’s not counting Marion Barber. And you could say that running backs are the strength of my team, but then again, I’m starting Anquan Boldin and Steve Smith.

You’re all screwed sirs.

(At least if Trent Edwards doesn’t continue shitting the bed)

I should probably wait until a game I actually win to start bragging.

I have the crappiest FF team quality to points scored ratio ever this year. Hopefully it’s just a slow start for some of my players and I’m going to stomp faces left and right from here on out.

I have a 1.7 lead over Gridbirds with Steve Smith and Nick Folk still to play. He has Tony Romo and Patrick Crayton. I’d say he’s the favorite, but it could be a very close match. I need Steve Smith to pull a 130 yard game out of his ass again. If Dallas drives stall and turn into field goals, I win. If Romo has a fairly big day, but not to Crayton, I could win.

Tazmanian Devils has a 3 point lead over Omni with Witten still to play, whereas Omni has DeAngelo Williams. That will be a squeaker.

I can’t believe I’m off to a 1-2 start with my team so brimming with AWESOME.

Probably 1-3, too, since this week is gonna be ugly. Steve Smith, Anquan Boldin, and the Eagles defense are all on bye. My next best WR, Robinson, has a broken ankle or something. My RB stud, MJD, has to face the Tennessee defense, and hopefully back to stud status Pierre Thomas has to face the Jets.

:grumble: At least you have a win. 7th most points scored and I’ve got nothing to show for it.

Lost by 0.55 and then got hammered the next two weeks by the highest score of the week.

I do find it interesting to have made it to the Toyota Biggest Fantasy Blowout ticker for the second time in two weeks. Of course, this week its for getting blown out but its still kind of funny.

Frosted Glass sent me an e-mail saying:

“This is fairly last minute but I figured since I was number 1 in line it would be ok to scoop up pierre garcon.”

I think he missed that we’re using the automatic yahoo waiver system this year and he’s still submitting the waiver e-mail to me like we did last year. So it seems reasonable for me to carry out his wishes in this case and award him Garcon even though he didn’t go through the right channels this year, since his intent was clear and he does own the #1 waiver priority. Any problems with this?

Doesn’t seem fair since anyone who used the right channels would get screwed since they might have requested him in lieu of someone else missing out on their waiver opportunity for the week.

We’ll find out shortly if there are any conflicts.

I guess Frosted Glass got my e-mail in time and put in a claim through the proper channels, so situation averted.
I’m not giving up on Trent Edwards yet, but it sucks that I made a trade for him and then he lays an egg. I’m definitely willing to consider trade offers that land me a better QB. If it’s a good QB, I’m willing to involve Pierre Thomas, Marion Barber, or Steve Smith in the trade.
I also picked up Glenn Coffee this week because he’s going to stomp St. Louis into the ground, but I’m not sure if I can manage to bench Pierre Thomas after he put up 130 rush yards and 2 TDs… in the second half. If anyone wants to trade for coffee (who will get at least 2 games at starter replacing Gore, possibly more), offer me a non-crap receiver that I can plug in this week and/or make it part of part of some QB trade.

I’m going to post the rankings in our leagues sorted by points scored, just for kicks.

  1. Quentin’s JAMmers 3-0 348.55
  2. Isotopes 2-1 320.65
  3. Tazmanian Devils 3-0 307.25
  4. The Gridbirds 2-1 286.89
  5. Frosted_Lightning 1-2 282.65
  6. Court Jesters 2-1 281.41
  7. Kid_A 0-3 280.25
  8. Exploding Pancakes 1-2 275.80
  9. New York Fanboys 1-2 275.20
  10. Omni’s Omnipotents 1-2 268.84
  11. Last Place 1-2 255.35
  12. No Use For A Name 1-2 228.15

Kid_A is the most screwed so far.

I need to make room for a kicker this week and my roster is too awesome to boot anyone. So if anyone wants to make a 2 for 1 type deal (I give you 2 players, you give me back 1) I’m all ears.

I’d like to trade a WR + RB for a better WR (like maybe Henderson + Moreno for a decent WR2/WR3 type), or maybe Trent Edwards + RB for a better QB, or something along those lines. I have RBs out the ass, I could use QB/WR/TE help in that order. Please PM me or propose the trade in the league if you have any ideas.

I’m willing to trade: Marion Barber, Pierre Thomas, LeSean McCoy (looked great last week, not sure how Westbrook is doing), Jerome Harrison (85 yards against Baltimore despite a putrid offensive effort overall, he may be the starter if he does well this weekend), Glenn Coffee (Gore’s injury is a nasty one involving the bones of the lower leg, and he may not really recover for a month or longer, meanwhile the 49ers still plan to run down people’s throats with Coffee), and Knowshon Moreno, who takes more of the load and gets better each week. I’d be willing to include my lower WRs (Devery Henderson, Josh Cribbs) or Trent Edwards to make a package out of it.

My RBs put up over 100 points last week, and that was with Barber out. No reason you can’t get a chunk of that yourself. Buy now and I’ll throw in a free grooler.
