It’s an alluring trap, because both **NDD **and 84 display a rudimentary ability to string sentences together, which gives the false impression that with enough patience and good information they might be reasoned with.
NDD is obviously beyond saving, but I feel I owe **84 **something of an apology. What I mistook for simple willful obstinacy is clearly a fundamental inability to understand the arguments being proposed to him. It would be nigh impossible to state things any clearer than Heart of Dorkness did, and yet he still fails to understand why his position is fatally flawed. Yes, he’s a racist and probably a thoroughly loathsome person in real life, but it’s a direct result of an unfortunate life spent struggling to make sense of the world around him using the extremely limited tools he’s been given. Ironically, I suspect genetics are at least partially to blame for his disability.
He’s like a smug half-wit who’s concluded that the music from his radio comes from tiny people playing tiny instruments inside the receiver.
