I don’t believe there’s any such thing as “impulse control” as a monolithic, quantifiable variable. Everybody has low impulse control at some times, regarding some impulses ; is better at controlling the same impulses at other times or at controlling other impulses. I’m pretty good at controlling my spikes of anger (at least, at not acting upon them), but often not at controlling my indulging in drinking all of the beer in one sitting. All of it. When I’m depressed I drink more than when I’m in love in the Spring, etc…
Nor do I believe that the poor have worse “impulse control” than the rich - yet the very poor tend to fall into thieving ways more often, for some reason. Or at least to get arrested for it more ;). No that crime need be impulsive, of course. I’m sure plenty of it is calculated and even rational: I always jump the turnstiles in the subway because, on average, the occasional fine costs me less than what I’d pay in subway tickets. Slinging weed is more profitable, if more risky, than flipping burgers.
In any event, and to the extent that there might be a genetic component to these things, I don’t believe it’s on the level of immediate circumstances, education, growing environment, parental relationships and so forth. Not by orders of magnitude.
Again, I wouldn’t think it’s “true” in any really quantifiable sense. Nobody’s born intelligent, the same way nobody’s born good at fencing. Intelligence is something you develop and exercise, not something innate. Drop a toddler chock full of “intelligent genes” into the wilds, he won’t come out of the jungle an eloquent math wiz 20 years later.
But if we’re on that subject, I remember stumbling upon an article recently which claimed that a recent study found that curiously and unintuitively the kids of parents averaging 115 IQ seemed to tend to average around 90 themselves. Wish I could find it again - I think it was in a Cracked article (yes, I know :p, doesn’t mean their cites come from the funny pages as well !) but I’m having no luck tracking it down.
The reason why we have different breeds in dogs, is because we have constantly been inbreeding them for specific traits. We cull those that display traits we don’t like and selectively breed those that do.
Humans have not done that. Even during slavery, which wouldn’t be enough time anyway for selection to take place, the slave owners were banging their slaves. Injecting (heh) new genetic material into the gene pool. What ‘breed’ of human is the result of an union between an African and an European? Whose level of intelligence is dominant and how do you determine it? By skin color? Eye color? How tightly curled the hair is? Nose width? Penis size? What if the ‘rule’ says that ‘breed’ is determined by the father and the father is white? Is that it…case closed? Is the offspring, now white regardless of what they physically look like?
Humans are not different breeds, the physical traits we have are not unique to one group of humans, as they are in dogs. What I mean by that is, you can find people with dark skin who are not African. You can find people with fair skin that are not European and so on. The lines between one group of humans and another are blurry and only become clear due to subjective criteria.
I have a question, what happens to the different breeds of dogs, once you stop artificially interfering with their reproduction? That is, if you allowed a group of different breeds to mate indiscriminately for several generations, do you think you would still be able to tell what breed the offspring was or would they all end up looking sort like a generic ‘mutt’?
One wagers they would all become what my father calls “a purebreeds”. But who knows ? Maybe fox terriers are all racists who look down on them lazy bichons.
Weird coincidence- just yesterday I was remembering the… colorful characters I encountered during my brief time at Yahoo Answers!, trying to fight ignorance in the Religion and Spirituality section. (Ignorance won). Chief among them was this guy who used to show up and rant about how “AshkeNAZI” Jews weren’t really Jewish because we were actually Khazars. Something like that.
(Though presumably there are some Jewish descendants of the Khazars somewhere).

Having admittedly not read this entire thread, I’ll just say that NDD’s brand of racism will always exist until being “white” isn’t the built-in safety net that it currently is, because there will always be people who are so worthless that being “white” is all they have going for them.
Your care is of no logic, since North Africa has had populations that you Americans call black since ancient times - before Islam, and had a very large injection of what you Americans call black Africans during the many centuries of the Islamic empire.
Your strange citing to Morocco for having lower murder rates to America is of nonsense for making claims about race, as at least a third of the Moroccan population would be called black under American standards. Well . . . Andrew McDonald’s Cosmotheism (a racist form of pantheism, however oxymoronic that sounds) holds that nonwhites are inferior in a sort of ontological sense. I recall reading in his book The Turner Diaries, Turner fears that if the Organization’s rebellion fails, Earth will spin on through space populated only by “indifferent mullato zombies,” not essentially different from having no human inhabitants at all.
It is difficult to understand how during one’s self discovery the attitude of racism becomes a main feature of the personality and thinking. At what stage of socialization did it occur to a person to see a group as inferior? Did they have some combination of distorted learning experiences, poor role models, or ideas they obsessed on?
It must seem a threatening world to the racist, with their fears of loss, all the strange and new changes happening everyday. Does the racist feel nostalgic for the times prior to civil rights because that was when people knew their place, and even the dark folks believed the myth that unchallenged white privilege came because whites were superior?
Racists come up with all sorts of ways to justify why they think we are sub human, and they do not always care to admit that they despise us because we are different. And it is possible that our intelligence may be different, as we are coming from our unique set of circumstances, and histories.
If racists were to genuinely know the dark human beings they assume are lowering their high standards, I wonder if it would surprise them to learn that different standards, more relevant to our own set of values and experiences exist; and that there are many different types of intelligence.
