Woo hoo…I got my books today (transatlantic mail and all that). It seems Lamar is psychic as he sent me two books I really wanted:
I got Driving Mr. Albert (a book about driving through America with Einstein’s brain in a Tupperware bowl, who wouldn’t want to read that) and Galatea 2.2, the book that my ex-roommate insisted that I read but then moved to Berlin, taking the book with her.
So I’m exceedingly happy, thank you, Lamar. Have you gotten the books I sent? (starting to fret and worry)
I have that book and it’s fantastic. There was a mini-series based on it, but it couldn’t do such a detailed work justice.
As a fan of alternate history, it always makes me wonder how things would have gone differently if Peter’s father Alexis had not died so young. He was only in his forties. If he’d lived, say, another twenty or even thirty years, Peter would certainly have been a different sort of man.
Einmon, my apologies for not posting this sooner, but I did get your books.
I received 'round Ireland with a Fridge, which is just my style and is hysterical. A man wakes up one morning with a raging hangover and a note beside his bed. The note is a 100 pound bet that he could hitchike the circumference of Ireland within 30 days, with a refridgerator. It’s a true story. The other is Jane Hamilton’s The book of Ruth, which was on one of the many lists I keep around the house. I have read A Map of the World. Two great choices.
This is killing me. These all sound so good, plus I have good books sent to me by NE Texan and twickster, and the lovely Brynda sent me too great books, and my MIL has given my several books recently, and delphica sent me a book I’ve been wanting to read, plus I’ve got a book to finish for Book club on Wednesday, plus I found a few at a used bookstore lately that I want to get to…
I need to go on a cruise where I do nothing but read on a deck chair.
I’ll second that, though I’d have to wheel my books with me and that’d break my back. People think I’m joking when I say that my house, if I ever buy one, will have one room as a library…I’m not joking
I just wanted to give a big fat goobery shout out to **Life On Wry ** for the stack of books that she sent:
Long Dark Tea Time into the soul Doug Adams Which I just started reading and have giggled a few times already.
She’s Come Undone Wally Lamb. ( I’ve eyed this one since it has come out. Thanks!)
**Anyone But you ** and Getting Rid of Bradley both by Jennifer Cruise. I think I am really going to like these.
Full House Janet Evanovich. Another book that I know I will like.
** The restaurant at the end of the universe** Doug Adams. The man is just a genius, what more can I say?
**Lola Carlyle Reveals All ** by Rachel Gibson. Ooooooooh, this looks reallllly good in my favorite brainless romantic plot way.
So naturally, whilst I say a big THANK YOU to Life I would like to say that you have caused me to neglect my house ( more than my usual round of neglect.) delayed me putting in my garden and have probably set back my Xmas Sewing projects that I was gung ho on until this package arrived.
Twickster: computer gods willing your books should be there by ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh July I should think;)
Baker… I’ll second that on Peter the Great…maybe if dear old Batushka had stayed alive longer he would have only been Peter the SoSo… I am at page 579 … counting down to June 6th… this is not merely a book its a Chronicle of the times and people of late 17th and early 18th century Europe… Highly recommended but I understand if your attention span or muscles just can’t do it big cheezy grin
rjk…yes truly anyone with only ONE room for books is a piker… see above for my hubby’s thoughts on my books…
That’s the first of two, Krisfer – I’ve been knocked flat with stomach flu for the last two and a half days, so the incredibly ambitious trip to the PO I had planned has been pushed back a few days…
Ahhhh the trhill of a new book!
You never know what you will find between the covers :
words of wisdom?
witty epigrams?..
Japanese notations!?
Apparently whomever read this before Twickster sent it to me liked to take notes… in Japanese! This book will have a UNIQUE place in my library! ordinarily I throw seven different kinds of fits and wear out multiple erasers on note takers and underliners… but there is just something "elegant about tiny japanese characters wedged in between to lines… so THESE notes will stay!
Wow, Krisfer, I knew it was used, but they said it was a “clean” copy – oh well. Effin’ Amazon. Sorry about that.
Japanese, hunh? They must have known we were Dopers – “well, we could send any old scribbled-up copy, but these guys would appreciate something a little more…esoteric!” At least you won’t be distracted by the stupidity (or otherwise) of the content of the notes.
Baker send me your addy as well… and preferences… I hate to see someone with nothing to read!
Twickster, its cool. You couldn’t know and besides its different. And as you said at least I wont be distracted by the pointing out of info I can read for myself! I read four pages last night at work… so far I am stoked! His writing style is much easier to read than I expected and humor is ALWAYS a good thing! If I can locate a copy I’ll send you “Amusing Ourselves to Death” by Neil Postman. I think its right up your alley.
