Baker – I think I must be your recipient, since I’m sure I’m the only Yorktown Doper – I’m afraid I haven’t yet recieved my book. I only just got home from my trip this morning, though, so my son may have intercepted it – if it looked like a book he may very well have decided he’d help me out by opening it and reading it for me. I’ll double check with him when he comes home. If you sent it media mail, though, it’s probably still en route – media mail is tantalizingly slow. I’m relieved actually – I was so sad on my trip thinking about a book waiting at home all lonely for me… Now I’m glad not to have missed out on the anticipation.
Morgainelf – I’m glad you hadn’t read Raney! When I saw that you had sent our Cold Sassy Tree, I was afraid you may have already read Raney – I have several other kind of obscure ‘Southern novels’ I’m going to add to my possible future book swap list.
Jess (glad to be back and looking forward to getting her book!)
**Delphica ** I finished the **Lemon Jelly Cake ** last night and dangnabit, I want to read more. Thanks for a great book! I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I haven’t heard if my book swap recipient has received my package. **Cranky, ** If you aren’t too busy with your thesis, holding back the BK Onion Ring Toot’s of Death and raising Cranky Jr to be the most adorable crankster in AA, could you find out if she has received it?
Opps, seems I missed this one. I guess you liked the book then huh? I’m glad I like his books too. The other two books though are totally different. If you really liked it, I might have more of his books and can ship them to you. I’m in the process of thining out my book collection so I might have some. I hope you haven’t read the other two.
I got mine, Another Primate! I have to admit I wouldn’t have grabbed it off the shelf for myself (the cover blurb sounds too ‘girly’ for me), but I started it and got caught up. Good choice!
Yes, rc, that would be a tornado, IIRC. Thunderstorms are more common in Saskatchewan (you need to go to Kansas for really good tornados - just ask Dorothy!), but I have seen a few funnels around, and they are scary. Glad you like the books!
Pencepon, I’m your mysterious sender – one by Margaret Frazer, and To Play the Fool by Laurie King. I’m glad you like them! My e-mail address should be in my profile. If not, post to this thread and I’ll get back to you.
Obfusciatrist, thanks. Your offering was a wonderful surprise. It’s something completely new to me, and I’m looking forward to finishing it.
Res, I actually received your book several days ago but this is my first chance to get online (check out my post time). Your book looks very intriguing, not only because it concerns physics but also because it (seems) to be a piece of fiction written in the second person. I honestly can’t remember ever reading a serious book in that format before. I flip through the pages and I have to admit to being highly impressed at first glance: the author is attempting to bring to the reader an understanding of the fourth dimension and the numerous diagrams and the appendixes (…dices?) in the back imply that he took great care. That’s good because the “fourth dimension” always confused the hell out of me. Unfortunately I won’t be able to read it immediately due to the quickly approaching end of semester and being a wee bit behind in classes but believe me when I say your book is topping my list of leisure reading. It looks fascinating.
I haven’t checked in here for a while. I’d be more than happy to send one of my copies of Girl with a Peal Earring to someone. Cranky, if you’re still tracking book recipients, would you mind sending me an address? And Brynda, I finished the book (and enjoyed it) so I’ll be emailing you soon. Sorry to be such a slacker!
2 am this morning I finishedMaster and Commander. Oh how I love a cliff hanger ending! I will email you this week Yersinia. I wanna go out on the Mediterranean in a square rigged ship!
Leifsmama, you should get your book today or tomorrow. I have been travelling and unable to post, so I wasn’t able to let you know. I actually ended up mailing it from Charlottesville, VA, because I couldn’t seem to get to the post office before I left. (I know, I know, proof that I have lost control of my so-called life.)
Hodge. I finished The Fifth Business. I had heard of Robertson Davies, so it was on my “to read someday” list. I’m not quite sure what I thought of it. I couldn’t put it down, but I’ve heard it was side-splittingly funny, and I didn’t think it was in any way funny. The characters were interesting, but I don’t think I would volunteer to have lunch with any of them. All in all an interesting experience, and I’m glad to have read it.
To answer your other question, Punky has been a nickname of mine for a long time. I lived for a while in Slovakia, a wonderful place that I fell madly in love with. Women’s names there end in -ova, so my husband started calling me “The Punkyova” as a joke, and it stuck. Not very interesting, I suppose, unless you’re slavic.
I’ve talked to other people who’ve had similarly ambiguous reactions. I wouldn’t say it’s side-splittingly funny but the narrator has a dry, dark wit that I find very appealing. However, I agree with you in that I wouldn’t particularly want to hang out with any of the main characters. They’re all self-obsessed in one way or another due to the various grudges they hold but this made the resolution that much more cathartic for me. They each got what they deserved whether they liked it or not.
Hmmm, in retrospect I guess my choice is kind of a downer. I hope I didn’t alienate you too much
The Punkyova I got the books yesterday. Thanks! I’m going to start with Bridge of Birds and work to Guily Pleasures. I’m not a big vampire fan, but it looks entertaining. Thanks again.
I, for one, absolutely LOVED The Bridge of Birds. I have read it many times. There are two other books in the series I know of, but Bridge is the best. Iam glad to see I am not the only person to have read that beauty.
Singular1, I finished The Poisonwood Bible a couple days ago.
You were right, it was an excellent book. Very hard to put down. I think it could make a great movie - a miniseries, actually, since there would be so much to cover and I wouldn’t want anything left out.
I will be tackling the other book soon, but I just wanted you to know I really enjoyed your selection.
Bristlesage???
I got your book back today. They said it wasnt’t picked up. Email me and verify with me I have the right address… knowing me I copied it down wrong…
