SDMB Fantasy Football DYNASTY League: Year 18

2.04 Mike Washington Jr., RB, LV

@PeteyPart2 is on the clock.

No issues with Omni coming back. Big thanks to @Wilson for stepping in. You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.

Anyway… if that sounded harsh, I’m sorry. I’ve been under a lot of pressure the last couple of weeks from various directions and I was worried we were going to be in a pickle with no replacement until Wilson stepped up. I was also worried that something had happened to Omni. I certainly don’t want to boot him from the league. I’d like everyone to participate as long as we can. The continuity in this league is a big part of what makes it so unique. I’m not looking to punish anyone and ideally I want people to look forward enough to this league that participation comes easily rather than being something meeting the minimum requirements.

So, I’m glad you’re back Omni. Just… let’s all try to check in often/early enough that we’re not sure a few days before the draft whether everyone is going to play this year.

I’m good with Omni coming back. Considering we’ve been at this over 20 years I think a little grace is warranted. (I was here and didn’t get my keepers in, so ..)

And I also thought I would have 3 picks after the cuts as I ended up with a 28 man roster last year somehow.

Welcome back, @Omniscient - glad you are not dead in a ditch or whatever :slight_smile:

Thanks for stepping in @Wilson - true mensch behavior all around

I agree that it would be courteous for everyone to check during the early preseason just to confirm interest/readiness for the season. Nobody should be kicked out for not doing that, but it would be courteous to do so please be that person.

You do have 3 picks after the cuts. The #30 (3.06) pick coming up is yours. You ended up with 28 by having all 3 IR slots used. And I double checked - that’s the correct amount of slots. I thought we had decided on 2, but in 2023 we voted it in at 3.

I dropped the Commanders’ defense but for some reason they’re not showing as available (at least in the app).

@SenorBeef is on the clock.

as mentioned in this post the yahoo free agent list isn’t correctly showing who is available. Players that are added to teams do correctly get removed from the free agent list, but players that were cut / not kept don’t get re-added to the list. It used to work years ago, but hasn’t for a while.

Since we’re using a “submit draft results” tool to do all of this, we’re not really using the intended functionality of that tool anyway - it’s designed for entering an offline draft all at once rather than doing one in progress and using it as a reference, so I’m sure they don’t care if it works as a live update anyway.

This page https://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/f1/102921/draftresults has a reliable list of who is on a roster, and from there you just have to manually figure out who is available because they’re not on that list.

Anyway, working on my pick now.

As some of you may recall I do an annual fantasy football draft trip the weekend before Labor Day each year. I’m flying home from Park City now (though we’re stranded on the tarmac for 2 hours, gah). Once I’m on the ground at home I’ll get caught up on all the discussions.

Just a thought on this, maybe we should figure out an alternative means of communication. I don’t know if this is true for everyone, but I’ve largely moved away from Message Boards and Email as an urgent means of communication. We hope the Dope is around for a good long time, but we can’t ignore the possibility that this message board could go away unexpected.

I’ve moved from an Inbox Zero guy to a “Text or DM me if you need something” policy at work and personally. Not making excuses, but Dope and Yahoo notifications tend to get lost in the sea of other status notifications for every other online thing.

I know some people still value anonymity, and moving to a different service that you only use for this one thing probably just shifts the problem without solving it. But maybe a good idea to start coming up with more direct means of communication as a fallback.

2.11 Germie Bernard, WR, Pittsburgh

@Hamlet is up

I’d be up for having a discord server or a whatsapp group or whatever, but there really isn’t a lot of urgent messages that are actually needed. the only situation that needs increasingly urgent ways to contact someone is if they don’t show up and we’re not sure whether they’re around and plan to show up. Even taking a look at the message board every month in the offseason or even just planning to look once in early august would’ve prevented the situation where we didn’t know whether you’d be back. I don’t think that’s some crazy ask and I don’t think we need to create an alternative communication channel for that.

I mean, it’s nice if people respond to their trade offers and such in a relatively prompt way, so even just setting your team to an e-mail address you check would be nice, but the only really urgent matter that we definitely need to resolve is whether or not an owner is going to be present or absent.

I’m not trying to pick on you specifically, this would apply to everyone. I’m not trying to be morbid but we’re all old enough and this league has run long enough that there’s a reasonable chance that any of us could become permanently unavailable at any time. And it’s happened before, though no one knows what happened with Varlos, but still - poof, gone without explanation permanently. I don’t want to be guessing in late august whether that happened again and have no way to know.

I mean - you take a trip for your other fantasy football league. and I’m sure you care more about that one, and fair enough. But this one is not some random yahoo league to blow off - we’ve been committed to this for almost 20 years. But it’s like 1/10000th as much effort to just check in on a message board thread.

That’s all I’m asking, and it applies to everyone - participate enough that we’re not left wondering if you disappeared especially at the most critical time.

2.12 Ted Hurst III, WR, Tampa Bay.

@dalej42 on the clock.

I’ve wondered about switching my email here on the boards to my actual real life gmail account, solely for this league.

I joined the boards in 2003 using the Hotmail account I had created in the late '90s. I still have access to that Hotmail account, but hoo boy do I rarely check it.

I don’t think I’m super comfortable switching. Plus, I find it funny that Hotmail is still going.

When we get to the 3.02 pick, you can make it Omni. I had hoped Wilson would post that he was happy to step aside after doing is a favor by being a steward of your team until you got back but he hasn’t been on the thread since then so I’m hoping he’s fine with how it turned out.
