SDMB Fantasy Football DYNASTY League: Year 18

I’m such a dumbass. I voted for the draft to start on the 24th, lol. I’m not sure why I voted that way other than maybe to avoid a tie. (I made my votes late.)

The season starts September 9th, which means we still have 12 days to finish the draft. I don’t clearly remember, but if I had to guess, I’d say 12 days is probably the longest our drafts go.

Final preseason game is tomorrow, which would have given us only 11 days for the entire draft. Doable, but a little tight.

In hindsight, the ideal time to start this year’s draft would probably have been yesterday or today.

These are all just random musings. I’m not advocating for anything.

I don’t like anyone here. I was probably going to draft Stribling.

Denzel Boston, WR, CLE

@Hamlet is up

You don’t need to excuse your homer pick. :wink:

The age old question: Do you trust the expert rankings, or grab the guy you like?

Chris Bell, WR, Miami Dolphins.

Plus, he comes pre-injured, so nothing can go wrong.

@Jules_Andre is up.

I will trust the guy I like and reach a tiny bit.

2.01 - Nicholas Singleton, RB, TEN

@Wilson is on the clock

Nah, it’s not even that. I barely care about football or the Browns anymore and I’m not keeping up with camp and preseason to develop any favorites. I also didn’t have time this year to do too much watching video to find “my guys” so I was just looking at consensus rankings and evaluating the top 3-4 guys that were available when my pick came up, where Boston and Cooper were the top two. And I figure Cooper is behind Garrett for at least 4 years whereas the Browns, shitty as their offense is, is wide open and might actually have a functional offense next year. Plus someone has to catch those behind and below balls thrown at their feet and Boston looks like he has a good skillset for catching poorly thrown balls.

But I have almost no confidence in that pick. I was probably going to draft Stribling if he wasn’t taken the pick before, and I probably should’ve tried to aggressively trade into next year’s draft which should be better and when I’d ideally have more time to research.

Hey folks. Looks like I checked in too late. Haven’t had a chance to check the thread, but appears I’ve been replaced.

Bummed out, but I get it. Did we start the league earlier this year? Thought we usually kicked things off the Monday before Labor Day.

@Omniscient has resurfaced!
For the record, I’m more than willing to turn the team back over to him. I’m sure he’ll be thrilled by my decision to trade Caleb Williams for Geno Smith…

Hope it’s OK, but I’m going to hold off on making the pick at 2.02 for now till the powers that be weigh in on @Omniscient 's possible return. I’ll check back in the morning.

I just shot you a DM if you have a few minutes before turning in.

At 2.02, the Wilsomniscients select Omar Cooper Jr, WR, NYJ.

@Justin_Bailey is on the clock.

Oh good, this is who I was shooting for with this pick before the draft even started. (And welcome back Omni!)

2.03 Kaelon Black, RB, SF

@Ol_Gaffer is on the clock

There was much debate between Cooper and Black.

So Wilson did agree to take over your team either temporarily or long term as needed. I’d prefer you retain your team since you haven’t been missing long and whenever possible I want to maintain continuity. I know Jules felt differently. If Wilson is still okay for just being a temporary custodian, then I’m okay with transferring ownership back, but I want to hear what other people think.

And yes, we did start the draft earlier, because the NFL shrank the amount of time between the third preseason game and 53 man cuts and opening day, it was one of the votes this year. You can’t really just be totally out of contact until late August like that. You don’t have to check in daily, but planning to be totally out of contact until a couple of days before you thought the draft would start is unreasonable

Yay, Omni is alive and kicking! Great to see you.

Sort of, but not really. Basically on the early side of our normal starting time. However, because opening day is rather late this year (Sep 9) we did absolutely start this draft earlier than we normally would. I was curious so I dug up stats until the nostalgia overwhelmed me:

Year Draft Kickoff Days
2026 Aug 26 Sep 9 14
2025 Aug 24 Sep 4 11
2024 Aug 26 Sep 5 10
2023 Aug 28 Sep 7 10
2022 Aug 29 Sep 8 10
2021 Aug 30 Sep 9 10
2020 Aug 30 Sep 10 11
2019 Aug 26 Sep 5 10
2018 Aug 26 Sep 6 11
2017 Aug 28 Sep 7 10
2016 Aug 26 Sep 9 14
2015 Aug 28 Sep 10 13

I would think, going forward, we should just set the draft to start 12 days before kickoff (not including kickoff itself) and call it good. If we did that this year, we would have started the draft yesterday, Friday the 28th.

Also, as a general rule, we should all make it a point to check in with the thread no later than two weeks (14 days exactly) before kickoff, which would have been Wednesday the 26th.

2 weeks before kickoff is way too late. We need more notice to know if someone is missing indefinitely and will need to be replaced. Otherwise we have to scramble for replacements 2 days before the draft like we did this year. People should try to check in around early August both so we know everyone is ready to go and potentially to discuss and vote on any rule proposals.

I tend to agree, but I don’t know that I’d go so far as to say “planning.” We do have precedent from 2017, and probably other years, but I was one of the 2017 dudes so it immediately caught my attention.

(As an aside, 2017 was a walk down memory lane. VarlosZ started the thread, and both Petey and Stringer were still playing. Then in the 2016 thread I see Stringer bemoaning the loss of furt. I feel like I’m thumbing through old high school yearbooks.)

In 2017 our draft was scheduled to start August 25th, NFL season to start Sep 7, but a staggering three of us were no-shows completely until after the 25th:

Petey first appears in the thread Aug 26th
Ellis first appears in the thread Aug 27th
Hamlet first appears in the thread Aug 28th

So it turns out to have precedent, meaning I don’t think we can come down too hard on Omni here. First thread appearance on Aug 28th for a Sep 9th kickoff isn’t beyond the pale.

Because of us three no-shows that year we ended up delaying the draft until the 28th instead of the 25th. In fact, Hamlet didn’t make his first appearance in the thread until 2 hours after Jules picked Leonard Fournette at 1.01. That was year 9 of our league, so we hadn’t fully settled into our draft groove but we were pretty well experienced by then.

(Although I agree we should probably be better at this now than we were in 2017. Maybe 3 weeks before kickoff as a good “latest thread join” date?)

Best I can figure RNATB gets 3 draft picks for his 6 cuts so I’ve trimmed out the later round placeholder picks.

I haven’t renamed Wilson/Omni until I get official word.

Gaffer was already @'ed, so we should be good to go.

Fair point with your past examples. I’m not trying to be punitive, but I didn’t remember things being that bad in the past. To be fair, Varlos was still commish in 2017 (so I may not have noticed as much as I do when I’m commish) and also the fact that Varlos disappeared without explanation kind of highlighted the potential for someone vanishing suddenly without explanation which may have made me more sensitive to the possibility. I’m glad Omni is alright, but any of us could suddenly have health issues or other sort of disappearance and we’d have no real way to know until they didn’t show up or respond to e-mails and PMs for too long.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable at all to ask people to participate in the thread discussion, vote on any issues, and at least check in relatively early in the process so we know everyone is around and planning to play their team this year. The SDMB has been shrinking for a long time and it’s not trivial to find a replacement owner if we need it, as you can see from our search this year. And we’re not a particularly young crowd, it’s not unreasonable to think people could suddenly disappear permanently. I think the fact that Omni was around in April, still participating in the thread, made me worry that something had happened.

I understand a lot of people don’t visit the boards every day anymore, but once every few days during fantasy football season seems reasonable to me. And you could always use an e-mail address for your team that you check regularly, since that’s our secondary mode of notification/check in.

Anyway, I would like to maintain continuity and let Omni take control his team. Wilson was very nice to step in and offer to cover Omni on a temporary or permanent basis, so I don’t think he has a problem stepping aside, though I hope it’s not frustrating now that he invested in it a little bit. I hope we don’t need to replace anyone in the forseeable future, but if we do, Wilson will definitely get first crack at it if he’s interested.

Cool with you, Wilson? And Omni, and everyone else?

I entered RNATB’s keepers and updated the draft, draft results should be current and correct.
