We’re at like the 50th pick of a crappy draft, I’ll happily draft a Matt Jones every time. All my options were pretty crappy and are likely to bust, I just picked the guy who at least has a small potential of boom. I’d have picked Patton, Hunter, Taylor, or Dobson, but there was no one left.
Matt Jones was actually pretty solid for a couple of years. If he’d stayed off the coke he might still be in the league. He had two 700-plus yard seasons for a team that threw eight passes a game.
He was awful. The only reason he had any kind of production whatsoever was that he was on a team with gigantic busts Troy Williamson, Joey Porter, and Michael Sims Walker and never will be’s like Reggie Williams, Ernest Wilford, and George Wrightster. He rarely was a starter (15 career starts in 4 years), and he ran one route well - go deep.
Oh, I was just poking fun at Beef for the hell of it; didn’t mean to start an actual discussion.
If you can put up 760 yards just going deep you’re not awful. Remember, he hadn’t even played WR before.
That one season above 700 was his 4th year playing in the pros. In his defense, he was better than that list of dogshit receivers I gave you, so maybe “awful” is too harsh. But he wasn’t good, nor solid, and his production came only because everyone else on the team was horrid.
I just realized I’m arguing over Matt Jones. My god, I need a life.
The comparisons that are more apt is that he’s more like Antwaan Randel El or Josh Cribbs than Matt Jones. In any case, it’s really difficult to make a bad pick at the end of this draft. Yes, 90% chance he’s a total bust, but his upside if he doesn’t bust is higher than anyone left in the draft probably.
And that was at a time when receivers didn’t put up 1000 yard seasons until they were in their third years. Larry Fitzgerald had 780 yards as a rookie and people were amazed.
Racist.
Did someone send furt a PM?
I sent him a reminder PM. Technically he’s out of time, but we’ll wait a while longer before doing anything.
If it comes to it, should we skip him, or make his pick for him?
NFL draft rules seem fine: Skipped, others may make their picks, and then when he returns he’s able to submit his pick whenever he posts but whoever is on the clock is not required to wait.
Like what happened with the Vikings several years ago. heh.
EDIT: I would not be happy to see him get a “pick by committee” that happens to be the guy I’m targeting.
I guess I could make a provisional pick for him, then when he comes back he can swap it out for anyone still on the board. It’s not a huge deal this late in the draft, but I’m not wild about skipping him and giving people an incentive to rush their picks to get in ahead of him. (Nor, as the case may be, to slow things way down to give him a chance to get back.)
But yeah, skipping him wouldn’t be a catastrophe.
There is a guy I’m actually targeting. If you take him for furt I’ll be pissed.
Ditto. I’m next on the draft list, but I have no problem giving furt another night to make his pick. But I’m not big on making the pick for him.
I’m sorry – in meetings all day.
Chris Polk, RB, Phi
I’ll send a list to someone to make a proxy pick for me next round.
Also, Zach Ertz was a steal.
Matt Jones was more of a long strider/straight line speed guy, Denard seems like more of the short area quickness nimble type.
I’ll reach into my ass, and pull out:
Julius Thomas, TE, Denver
