Which theme?

Desktop, Windows 10, Firefox current version (125.0.1), Straight Dope Light theme.

I blocked out the shortcuts in my sidebar, which I normally keep open.

Like others have described, once scrolling down into a thread the problem goes away. Presumably because it no longer displays the subheading at all.

Also on Chrome Windows 10 and I don’t have the red stuff show up at all.

I’m on Firefox, Windows 10 (I think so). Banner and menus in wrong place. Hard talk complete sentences. I go now.

Banner messed up for me too. Windows 11, both Firefox and Chrome, Straight Dope Light theme.

I’m not sure what this is supposed to mean. I just tried the Straight Dope Dark theme and it has exactly the same problem as Straight Dope Light.

Not on mine, or not any longer. I’m now seeing this weird new version on individual topic pages.

– wait a minute. It just went back to normal. I hadn’t refreshed or re-opened the page. It’s 9:11 PM EST and it must have just happened. – but I looked at a couple of other pages I have open and they still have the weird version. – I have a number of threads open and some of them show one version, some the other. But this one changed while I was typing this post, and I hadn’t done anything else to the page.

For now I used adblock to block the red stuff, and things scooted back over. It still doesn’t look right, though. Something is missing.

And @thorny_locust: The way it has always worked for me is that you get one banner with the full “The Straight Dope Message Board” appears when you are at the top of a Topic (i.e. thread) but changes to a banner with “SD” and the title of the thread once the title has been scrolled off screen. The same is true in messages.

On all other pages, I always get the full “The Straight Dope Message Board” banner. And that’s the one that is messed up.

I think it’s now established that:

  • Straight Dope Light and Straight Dope Dark both have the banner problem, appearing more or less like the screenshots that I and @EllisDee posted, with slight variations depending on screen resolution and browser. It may or may not also affect other themes.

  • The problem appears both on the banner on the main message board page and when navigating to any forum. The banner that appears within a thread is the normal one and displays correctly.

  • It is not a browser or OS problem.

  • The problem was first observed in the early afternoon of Friday April 19.

I wasn’t at the top of the topic when I made that post; I was already most of the way down. And the banner changed while I was typing the post, not while I was scrolling.

It now seems normal on all the thread pages, but has the weird version on Unread, New, and Latest.

I had the strange version on individual threads for a while yesterday. I don’t right now.

Which leads me to the inevitable question. How do I change my theme?

All I know is Ed was working with the techs on it. So @Ed_Zotti is the one to thank connected to the board and unknown tech person for the actual fix I would think.

So is all now good? Looks OK on my end.

Yes, and thank you very much for your help on this. The banner looks exactly like it did before in the Straight Dope Light theme that I use and that I believe is quite commonly used. All is good! :slight_smile:
