Yes, I know you hate all QBs with strong arms. Skelton would be a prefect guy to groom in Buffalo behind Campbell.
As much as I hate men made of straw.
Sorry, was at work. Glad to see **furt **came in and saved the day. I was going to pick a DT but had no idea who to select and then I had to leave. Good work furt!
Whoops…didn’t realize I was up. Working on a pick now.

While I think I could continue, the actual draft starts tomorrow, so we can end it here. If people want to keep selecting, feel free, I may jump in quickly. But 4 rounds is pretty good, and I want to see what I think of how teams did in this draft. And then we’ll have the real on to dissect.
More later.
We’re now pretty much just putting our “sleeper desires” on the other draft thread.
I think this was fun. Maybe we can get more people next year.
I enjoyed it. I learned a ton about other teams (teams I don’t follow) and their rosters. It will be fun to look back in 4 years and see how it all worked out.
Yeah, I agree. Four rounds is plenty with the real deal starting tomorrow. It was a fun mock, and I look forward to seeing how we did…
Since it is the division nearest and dearest to my heart, here’s my thoughts on this mock draft for the NFC North.
NFC NORTH
Green Bay Packers
Rd. 1 - Anthony Davis, LT, Rutgers
Rd. 2 - Chris Cook, CB, Virginia
Rd. 3 - Jason Worilds, OLB/DE, Virginia Tech
Rd. 4 - Darrell Stuckey SS, Kansas
Review: I was astounded to get Davis in the first round, great value at a position of need. I completely reached to get Cook and I don’t like Worilds, but the “experts” do, so I wasn’t happy with those two. And Stuckey is one of “my guys” and fills a position of need. According to the “experts”, it’s a very good draft for the Packers. But to me, it’s barely just average. Still, if Davis lives up to his hype, it’d be a great start.
Chicago Bears
Rd. 3. - Mike Johnson, OG, Alabama
Rd. 4. - TJ Ward, S, Oregon
Review: Just like reviewing last years’ draft, this draft must be judged, in part, by Jay Cutler. Enough has been said about my feelings about him though. Mike Johnson was an OK pick. He’s very good for the running game, but he’s a limited athlete. Still, he should be able to make an immediate impact on the ground game, and the Bears O Line is certainly a position of need. I am not a member of the TJ Ward fan club. With just 3 interceptions in 4 years, he’s spent more time recovering from injuries than playing. When healthy, he’s a great hitter, but I’m not sold he’ll be good enough in coverage, and healthy enough, to make an impact in the NFL. With such a gaping hole at Safety, I thought the Bears should take someone with less risk. But his upside makes selecting him in the 4th round a solid pick. They addressed their biggest needs in the rounds they had selections. And Cutler.
Detroit Lions
Rd. 1 - Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
Rd. 2 - Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida
Rd. 3 - Dexter McCluster, KR/Gnat, Mississippi
Rd. 4 - Toby Gerhart, RB, Stanford
Review: I think Suh is a no brainer and I know of nobody who doesn’t like the guys potential. Dunlap was good value at another position of need. Those two guys can anchor a teams D line for a long time IF Dunlap wakes up. Getting a DUI right before the biggest game of your career shows a huge lack of judgment, and I’m not convinced he’s got the desire or motor to play every play. But when he’s on, he’s a beast; hopefully he’ll learn something from Vandenbosch. McCluster gets a big Meh, I don’t see him as a big time playmaker in the NFL, but I like Gerhart. The biggest question is why didn’t they take a single offensive lineman? Their O Line sucks, yet they passed on Saffold, Ducasse, Jerry, and others. That’s a huge need to be left undrafted.
Minnesota Vikings
Rd. 1 - Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers
Rd. 2 - Tim Tebow, QB, Florida
Rd. 3 - Myron Lewis, CB/S, Vanderbilt
Rd. 4 - Mitch Petrus, OG, Arkansas
The Vikings secondary needs help in this draft, and getting McCourty and Lewis gives them immediate help with good value. They also need help in the interior O Line, and they got lucky having Petrus fall to them. I really liked those three picks. But I don’t like Tebow. I don’t think he’ll make it as an NFL quarterback. While he was, in theory, good value in the bottom of the second, I think it was a wasted pick. I’ll be fascinated to see where he goes in real life. They still need a RB, but the pickings were very slim in the 4th round, so maybe later in the draft. If Tebow actually turns into an NFL QB, this would be an amazing draft.
If anyone gives a shit, I can review their draft.
Well my Chargers came out of this draft with
- Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno St.
- Terrence Cody, NT, Alabama
- Javier Arenas, CB, Alabama
- Aaron Hernandez, TE, Florida
I think I’d be thrilled if that actually happens.
Also, on the ESPN Insider, I can give you a mock draft of all 7 rounds. In the interest of not posting the entire thing here, let me know if you want your team.
I’ll review my own drafts. You can check my work if you like, Hamlet.
Buccaneers:
1 (3) Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
2 (35) Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame
2 (42) Daryl Washington, LB, TCU
3 (67) Chad Jones, FS, LSU
4 (101) Sergio Render, G, Virginia Tech
McCoy was a no-brainer. I didn’t put in for Golden Tate, but I like him as a 2nd Round receiver. Washington can start right away as a 4-3 OLB. Jones could be a bit of a reach, but I had him at 54 on my big board and with some development can help the Bucs defense along with the above two guys in front of him. I think Render will be a decent player.
Raiders
1 (8) C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson
2 (39) Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State
2 (51) Sean Lee, ILB, Penn State
3 (69) Arthur Jones, DT, Syracuse
3 (70) Eagles - Perrish Cox, CB, Oklahoma
4 (106) Ed Wang, OT Virginia Tech
Spiller is, admittedly, a crazy pick, but I’m pretending to be Al Davis, here. Spiller could be Chris Johnson, or he could be Reggie Bush. Robinson was mainly to make up for “trading” Asomugha. I think Wang is a steal in the 4th.
Gotta go, I’ll do the 49ers later.
For the Lions:
Round 1: Ndamakong Suh DT, Nebraska
Round 2: Sean Weatherspoon ,OLB Missouri
Round 3: Montario Hardesty, RB Tennessee
Round 4: Corey Wootton DE, Northwestern
Round 7: Kevin Haslam, OT Rutgers
Round 7: Dace Richardson, OG Iowa
Round 7: Antonio Brown, WR Central Michigan
Round 7: E.J. Wilson DE UNC
Good to end it now. I think it was a good run. Thanks for running it, Hamlet.
The Steelers picks
- Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State
- Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, CB
- Cam Thomas, DT, North Carolina
- Dan LeFevour, QB, Central Michigan
Not bad. Akwasi was a reach in the second, (I was going to take Cook from Virginia), but I decided to take the small school reach. I’ll be curious to see where he goes in the draft.
I don’t think the Steelers will draft a receiver in the first round, but go O-line instead.
Well see.
This was loads of fun, and a whole lot more work than I expected. Don’t know what I would’ve done without the cheat sheets from Walter Football and Lance Zierlein, our local newspaper’s fantasy football guy and nfl blogger who actually knows what he’s talking about.
Not being an Insider, I’d like to take up LOUNE’s offer for the Houston Texans.
For all teams I ran besides the Texans, to determine positional need, I relied heavily on hometown blogs and the draft capsules from Yahoo. The Texans’ main needs are S, CB, and RB. They would like a DT to replace the disappointing Okoye, and who doesn’t need O-line depth, but the secondary and RB are absolute priorities.
So, Houston Texans draft
1st round: Earl Thomas, S, Texas. After Eric Berry, the consensus top safety in the draft. I’ve seen him going anywhere from 6 to 15 in mocks, so I was stunned to see him available and was desperate to make sure Atlanta didn’t get him. The Texans gave up gobs of deep plays last year and desperately need a speedy center-fielder type. I can see them going after Morgan Burnett, FS, Georgia Tech in the 2nd instead, if they choose to pick up Ryan Matthews, Kyle Wilson, or [oe Haden instead…
2nd and 3rd rounders traded to Oakland for Nnamdi Asomugha, CB. Did this as a frustrated reaction to Bob McNair, richer than Croesus, choosing to not go after anybody significant in free agency. CB is a giant need for the Texans, so why not spend 16 million for a consensus top-4 CB in the game? Absent the trade, they probably pick up a CB in the second round, maybe Owusu-Ansah, and Ben Tate in the 3rd. I like Toby Gerhart in the 3rd; just feel he adds a one-cut and go element they missed last year.
4th Round: Ben Tate, RB, Auburn. Again, cannot believe he fell this far; he tracks as a 2-3 rounder at both mock sites I used. The Texans’ blogger would have counted him as a priority to target in the 2nd-3rd rounds. Couldn’t pass him up.
I don’t have a can’t miss/overrrated section. For the most part, I didn’t watch these guys play. I do think that Jordan Shipley will be a heck of receiver for someone and I facepalmed myself for not picking him with the Boys’ 3rd rounder. A lot of the time, he was Texas’s passing offense, and he still largely came through. On the flip side, I can’t see Colt McCoy being a star quarterback at the next level, nothing concrete I can point to, just a feeling.
Finally, Bill Simmons has his own mock draft up here. I like Simmons, and have been avidly reading him for the last 7 years or so, but I was very surprised at the shallow commentary and mediocre knowledge in that column. Especially to what I’m used to reading here, at footballoutsiders, and other football blogs. I guess it’s true that you only read him for the NBA anymore.
Thanks again to Hamlet for setting this up and running with it.
You can review mine, **Hamlet. **I’d do a review but honestly I don’t know too much about these guys but from the limited reading I did when my turn was coming up. I can explain why I took who I did, when, though.
24 (24) Eagles - Maurkice Pouncey, OG/C, Florida
5 (37) Eagles - Kareem Jackson, CB, Alabama
23 (55) Eagles - Navorro Bowman, OLB, Penn State
6 (70) Eagles - Perrish Cox, CB, Oklahoma State
23 (87) Eagles - Dezmon Briscoe, WR, Kansas
7 (105) Eagles - Jonathan Dwyer, RB, Georgia Tech
23 (121) Eagles - Earl Mitchell, DT, Arizona
I took Pouncey in the first round because he’s an ideal Eagles’ pick. If he is still there (almost impossible) and the Eagles haven’t moved, they will draft him with no reservation. He does everything they love an interior lineman to do and it’s a position of need. Kareem Jackson was another player taken in a spot of need that represented decent value. Bowman was taken as another spot of need about 3 hours before news came down the Eagles had traded for Ernie Sims. Bowman isn’t a wasted pick I don’t think, but as close as it comes if Bradley and Sims stay healthy.
The rest were BPA-insurance picks, and I didn’t pick Mitchell (but would have taken a DT).
I like both guys but love neither. I think if they are both available when the Bears are drafting I’ll count it as a very successful draft. Of course the real Bears management would never draft players that are that well thought of. Johnson would immediately help the run game and that’s the most important thing for this team, for as pass happy as a Martz offense is, it’s at it’s scariest when a team is able to run the ball. Guards are the most important piece for the running game, thats why I went there before Safety. I like Ward but I agree he’s far from a sure thing. As usual the Bears will spend a middle round pick on a Safety and hope for the best, at least Ward in this mock is a good value as opposed to a reach.
Here’s what I landed for the Rams. Pretty good haul I think, it included another pick added in trading down in the 3rd.
1.1 (1) Rams - Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
2.1 (33) Rams - Demaryius Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech
3.4 (68) Rams (from Chiefs) - Zane Beadles, OG, Utah
4.1 (99) Rams - George Selvie, DE, South Florida
Bradford is a no brainer and while I’m not sold on his ability the Rams simply don’t have any choice. And for as concerned as I am about Bradford there isn’t anyone else that is even close to him in my estimation. It’s a god awful QB class. If the Rams are going to get a QB they need to get him some weapons. They need help at the line too, but hopefully Jason Smith will help there. Thomas is projected as a 1st rounder and I really think he’ll become a star, if I had to gamble on a guy I think I’d rather gamble on him than Bryant 20 picks sooner. Beadles addresses that need at OG and should help both Jackson and Bradford. I really like his ability and I think he’s more of an asset than the OTs that were going in this part of the draft. I’ve talked about Selvie a lot, he was lost in the shuffle with Pierre-Paul getting so much buzz. I don’t see Selvie as a Pro Bowler but I can see him having an Alex Brown like career, steady, productive and a ideal locker room guy. Perfect guy for a crummy team to grow around.
Now the Seahawks
1.6 (6) Seahawks - Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma
1.14 (14) Seahawks - Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida
2.28 (60) Seahawks - Eric Decker, WR, Minnesota
4.6 (104) Seahawks - Joe McKnight, RB, USC
4.29 (127) Seahawks - Kevin Thomas, CB, USC
Tough to guess what Carroll will do in his return to the Seahawks. I think he sees Charlie Whitehurst as the answer at QB and I doubt they’ll go that route. I actually like Williams more than Okung or any of the other OTs projected in the first round. The only guy who’s close is Iupati I think, so the Seahawks should be thrilled to get him there to replace Walter Jones. Pierre-Paul might be a bust but few people seem to think he makes it out of the top 10, so at 14 it’s probably the right pick for such a dire need. I think Carroll will like the idea of an elite athlete with some technique issues after coaching at USC, and frankly I wouldn’t be shocked if he made the guy great. Decker is one of my favorite WRs in the draft and it pains me to say I like him more than my fellow Illini. In the 4th round I went with a couple of USC guys. They are valued about right and given the choice I’d be shocked if Carroll doesn’t take a couple USC guys.
