2010 NFL Draft Thread: April 22nd - 24th

T-minus 27 hours 40 minutes until the 2010 NFL Draft. Time for a fresh new thread. The St. Louis Rams are on the clock. We’re wrapping up a SDMB Mock Draft in which we’ve started predicting/hoping what all the teams will/should do. It was a lot of fun. The NFL Combine and Free Agency Thread was long and informative and leads us right up to this one.

For me the NFL Season officially starts on Draft Day and the hype will crescendo to a fevered pitch over the next few months. So, let’s start arguing now!

Dunno about arguing just yet, but I am ready for some football…even if it’s just the Draft. Rumors running rampant about this team doing that and the other one doing something else. A couple I find very interesting–

  1. Steelers may be shopping Big Ben for a top ten pick (mentioned in one of the threads, maybe the draft one, or the Big Ben one). Apparently the Rams were not interested.

  2. Still hearing whispers about a surprise coming from the Saints. Nothing official, more of I know a guy who knows a guy kinda rumor, may be nothing to it–could be something.

  3. Even if they don’t trade him, Ben is suspended for 6 games, may be reduced to 4 for good behavior, but maybe could be increased. Really think there has to be more than meets the eye to that whole situation.

Also, I wish to register my displeasure with the draft format this year. Yeah, there will be a ratings spike for Thursday night’s first round, and probably Friday’s rounds 2-3, but the Saturday show is going to tank. Only the real die hard fans are going to hang in there to see which guy that won’t make the final roster their team picks in the 7th round. I liked it better the old way, when Draft Day was almost like a holiday…all day Saturday watching picks and clips, listening to Kiper and crew, etc. Now, I’ll probably cut my yard, and glance at the crawl to track picks in the late rounds.

I’m with Oakminster on hating the new draft format. I absolutely LOATHE it. The draft should be held on the weekend.

What’s the over/under for Day 1 trades? 5? 6?

The new format will have more fans paying attention to the top 100, not just the top 32. The fact that the first round will run into a Sharks playoff game isn’t an issue; I record those and start them ~30 late anyway.

The Cowboys are supposedly interested in trading up to 13 to pick Earl Thomas. The 49ers own that pick, and I could see them taking that trade if Joe Haden is gone. They could probably get Kyle Wilson at 17 and Charles Brown at 27.

I think you may see even more trades after Round 1. The teams will have most of a day to reconsider their draft boards before Round 2 starts, and I expect deals to be made…

No doubt, I wouldn’t be surprised by 12-15 round-two trades, not including round-one trades involving round-two picks.

See, I’m liking it. Having it during the day made it tough, for me, to go out, have a few, and enjoy it, because I always had to come home and try to accomplish something. Now, I get two nights and one day.

Plus, I think it will be more interesting. I expect many more trades in Rounds 2 and 4, with more strategy going into the selections. Giving the teams overnight to redo their draft boards will make it more interesting.

I still reserve the right to hate it once I actually experience it, but I’m kinda excited by the prospect.

I think the Big Ben for a top-10 pick is crazy, unless they’ll take a top-10 pick in the second round.

I’m going to the draft day festivities they’re holding at Ford Field this year and taking **gonzomax **and a couple of friends with me.

My guys:

2nd Round

Rodger Saffold, OT, Indiana

3rd Round

Eric Norwood, OLB, South Carolina
Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, CB, IUPUI

4th Round

Alterranum Verner, CB, .UCLA
Darrell Stuckey, S, Kansas
Andre Roberts, WR, The Citadel

5th Round

Brandon Carter, OG, Texas Tech

6th Round

Nate Collins, DT, Virginia
O’Brein Schofield, OLB, Wisconsin

7th Round

Chris Marinelli, OT, Stanford
Freddie Barnes, WR, Bowling Green
Larry Hart, OLB, Cent. Ark

Free Agents

Boo Robinson, DL, Wake Forest
Pat Paschall, RB, North Dakota State

I call dibs on these guys. I’ve put them in by round of the draft, because much of their appeal is in their value in draft. I’m not saying these guys will become studs, just that I like them and I think they’ll outplay their draft position. You can feel free to mock me in 3 years when every single one of the are out of football.

Saffold’s the only guy we have in common. This is good news.

I’ll call “dibs” on these guys:

2nd Round
Vladimir Ducasse, OL, UMass
Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State
Brandon Spikes. ILB, Florida

3rd Round
Selvish Capers, OT, West Virginia
Koa Misi, DE/OLB, Utah
Joe McKnight, RB, USC

4th Round
Jordan Shipley, WR, Texas
Perrish Cox, CB, OK State

5th Round
Adam Ulatoski, OT, Texas
Sergio Render, OG, VA Tech

6th Round
Syd’Quan Thompson, CB, Cal

7th Round/Free Agents
Sean Canfield, QB, Oregon State
Trindon Holliday, KR, LSU

The Eagles will almost certainly make a day one trade, either up to get Berry or Earl Thomas, or down to gain flexibility on day 2 and 3. The team is very fortunate to have only a couple positions of need at the moment (S, CB, OG/C, DL), and they aren’t highly drafted positions.

Andy Reid specifically asked for a top 10 pick in the second round for McNabb in order to take full advantage of the break between rounds one and two. Dude doesn’t know how to use timeouts, but he sure can manage a team. It’s a lot of fun being an Eagles fan in April. Playoff time? Not so much.

I’ll call dibs on one guy: T.J. Ward from Oregon. I don’t know anything about him other than when I read his bio (on one site) before nearly selecting him in the mock draft, he had the only bio I read that made him sound like a good player. Every other bio was “he’s good, but he also sucks a lot.”

Keep the booze away from gonzo!

Omni-'s dibs:

1st Round
Maurkice Pouncey, C, Florida

2nd Round
Eric Decker, WR, Minnesota
Roger Saffold, OT, Indiana
Jon Asamoah, OG, Illinois

3rd Round
Mike Johnson, OG, Alabama
Dexter McCluster, Bug, Ole Miss

4th Round
Ben Tate, RB, Auburn
John Skelton, QB, Fordham
T.J. Ward, SS, Oregon

5th Round
Mike Williams, WR, Syracuse
Quentin Scott, FS, Northern Iowa

6th Round
Mike Kafka, QB, Northwestern

7th Round
Michael Hoomanawanui, TE, Illinois

Guys I hate:

Major Wright, S, Florida
Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa
Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State
Brandon Graham, OLB, Michigan
Tyson Alualu, DE, California
Colt McCoy, QB, Texas

More to be added later. This is fun!

Eh. He’ll be fine. He’s a big boy.

I forgot to add:

My guys:

4th Round

Dennis Pitta
Roddrick Muckleroy

Your guys:

1st Round:

Jason Pierre Paul
Dez Bryant
Bruce Campbell
Whoever Al Davis picks

2nd Round

Brian Price
Tim Tebow

3rd Round

Jordan Shipley
Dorin Dickerson

Beyond:

John Skelton

I forgot him. He’s a “my guy” in the 2nd - 3rd round.

The 49ers have two draft picks, #13 and #17, in the 1st Round. I want a CB and an OL, specifically:

DB:
Joe Haden
Kyle Wilson
Earl Thomas

OL:
Mike Iupati
Anthony Davis
Maurkice Pouncey

I’d also be fine with a trade down if we can still get one of the above players. Also acceptable are C.J. Spiller and Rolando McClain, if it works out that way. I don’t really want Jimmy Clausen, Taylor Mays, or Dan Williams, but all three might still be good. I definitely don’t want Jason Pierre-Paul, Dez Bryant, or Bruce Campbell.

If they do trade down from 13, I’d expect the choices to be Kyle Wilson and Charles Brown.

Add Joe Haden to my list of guys I hate.

AH! Too much speculation and rumors! I can’t wait any longer.
