SDMB POTUS Single Transferable Vote Poll!

OK, I’ve been thinking about the field of self-proclaimed candidates for President of the United States of America.

While I don’t have a strong preference for Single Transferable Vote (STV) when electing an official, I do think it’s quite good for opinion polling. So, I’m going to start an STV poll.

This thread is for polling. Arguments about the merits STV, or of specific candidates or parties, can go in another thread. I’m using the list of major candidates from here–2008 United States presidential election - Wikipedia (sorry, I skipped a lot, mostly candidates for minor party noms & objects of draft movements)–but you can add anyone you have an opinion about to your ranking.

Democrats:
* Joe Biden, U.S. Senator from Delaware
* Hillary Clinton, U.S. Senator from New York
* Christopher Dodd, U.S. Senator from Connecticut
* John Edwards, former U.S. Senator from North Carolina
* Mike Gravel, former U.S. Senator from Alaska
* Dennis Kucinich, U.S. Representative from Ohio
* Barack Obama , U.S. Senator from Illinois
* Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico and former Secretary of Energy

Grand Old Party:
* Rudy Giuliani, former Mayor of New York City
* Mike Huckabee, former Governor of Arkansas
* Duncan Hunter, U.S. Representative from California
* Alan Keyes, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social Council
* John McCain, U.S. Senator from Arizona
* Ron Paul, U.S. Representative from Texas
* Mitt Romney, former Governor of Massachusetts
* Tom Tancredo, U.S. Representative from Colorado
* Fred Thompson, former U.S. Senator from Tennessee

Potential Unity '08 draftees:
* Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City
* Chuck Hagel, U.S. Senator (R-Nebraska)

Self-declared potential Independent candidates that I might know from Adam:
* Michael Moriarty, actor, writer, musician, and political activist.
* Sam Nunn, former U.S. Senator (D-Georgia)

OK, here’s how the voting works. You pick your first choice, that’s your #1. Then your second is #2, & on down the line. Feel free to ignore those you can’t take seriously or have no opinion about. Also, you can indicate a point at which you’re actively disapproving of candidates, but want to rank them further (For example, I’ve got 21 candidates here, so I might skip over those I’m ignorant about & rank Tom Tancredo #21. Or #179, just to make the point that I prefer any schizophrenics on the list to him.)

The final ranking is a little complex. I’m not that worried about creating an overall tally right now, I just want to see how Dopers rank candidates.

OK, here’re my rankings:

  1. Joe Biden, U.S. Senator from Delaware
  2. Christopher Dodd, U.S. Senator from Connecticut
  3. Barack Obama , U.S. Senator from Illinois
  4. Sam Nunn, former U.S. Senator (D-Georgia)
  5. Dennis Kucinich, U.S. Representative from Ohio
  6. John Edwards, former U.S. Senator from North Carolina
  7. Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico and former Secretary of Energy
  8. John McCain, U.S. Senator from Arizona
  9. Hillary Clinton, U.S. Senator from New York
  10. Chuck Hagel, U.S. Senator (R-Nebraska)
  11. Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City
  12. Fred Thompson, former U.S. Senator from Tennessee
  13. Alan Keyes, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social Council
  14. Michael Moriarty, actor, writer, musician, and political activist

Here commenceth the “I really don’t approve”:
15. Ron Paul, U.S. Representative from Texas
16. Rudy Giuliani, former Mayor of New York City
17. Mike Gravel, former U.S. Senator from Alaska (I know nothing about him but that he’s for the “Fair Tax,” which I think is bad.)
18. Mitt Romney, former Governor of Massachusetts
19. Mike Huckabee, former Governor of Arkansas
20. Duncan Hunter, U.S. Representative from California
21. Tom Tancredo, U.S. Representative from Colorado

Mike Gravel was almost left off the list due to my ignorance, but I deplore some of the others enough to put them below an unknown quantity.

  20. Alan Keyes, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social Council

Without regard to electablity, my preferences are as follows:

I WOULD VOTE ENTHUSIASTICALLY FOR
1 Al Gore, elected President in 2000
2 John Edwards, former U.S. Senator from North Carolina
3 Joe Biden, U.S. Senator from Delaware
4 Dennis Kucinich, U.S. Representative from Ohio
5 Mike Gravel, former U.S. Senator from Alaska

I WOULD VOTE WITH NO PARTICULAR PASSION FOR
6 Christopher Dodd, U.S. Senator from Connecticut
7 Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico and former Secretary of Energy
8 Barack Obama , U.S. Senator from Illinois

BETTER THAN A KICK IN THE BUTT WITH A FROZEN BOOT
9 Hillary Clinton, U.S. Senator from New York

DISLIKE WITH NO PARTICULAR PASSION
11 Mike Huckabee, former Governor of Arkansas

  8. Gravel
  9. Bloomberg
  10. Nunn
  11. Hagel
  12. Romney
  13. Moriarty, whoever the fuck he is
  14. McCain
  15. Thompson
  16. Huckabee
  17. Paul
  18. Hunter
  19. Tancredo
  20. Giuliani
  21. Keyes

Well okay, put him at #3 on my list. He wasn’t listed in the Op.

ENTHUSIASTIC-ISH ABOUT

  1. Dennis Kucinich, U.S. Representative from Ohio
  2. Barack Obama , U.S. Senator from Illinois

LUKEWARM ABOUT

  1. Hillary Clinton, U.S. Senator from New York
  2. Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico and former Secretary of Energy
  3. Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City

EXTREMELY “MEH” ABOUT

  1. Mike Gravel, former U.S. Senator from Alaska

  2. John Edwards, former U.S. Senator from North Carolina
    DO NOT WANT

  3. Mike Huckabee, former Governor of Arkansas

  4. John McCain, U.S. Senator from Arizona

  5. Mitt Romney, former Governor of Massachusetts

  6. Rudy Giuliani, former Mayor of New York City

WOULD RATHER VOTE FOR A LEMUR

  1. Tom Tancredo, U.S. Representative from Colorado
  2. Fred Thompson, former U.S. Senator from Tennessee
  3. Alan Keyes, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social Council

I was actually surprised to see Alan Keyes listed as a candidate. I think he’s becoming a perennial candidate of LaRouchian dimension. It amuses me to see “Alan Keyes, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social Council” at the bottom of everyone’s list. He is kind of a nut. I still prefer him to Tancredo.

Now I think of it, I might move Moriarty above Keyes & Thompson. I like Ben Stone better than Arthur Branch.

Can we vote for Jack McCoy???

WOULD EASILY VOTE FOR

  1. Dodd (I’m shocked that he comes closest to my positions, but there it is).
  2. Clinton
  3. Biden
  4. Kucinich

GENERALLY APPROVE OF, ONE OR MORE MAJOR MISGIVINGS
5. Richardson (I really really want to like him better, but just can’t)
6. Bloomberg
7. Edwards
8. Obama
9. Nunn
10. McCain

DON’T KNOW ENOUGH
??. Hagel
??. Hunter
??. Gravel
??. Moriarty

NO THANKS
15. Giuliani
16. Romney
17. Thompson

MOVING TO BELARUS
18. Paul
19. Huckaby
20. Keyes
21. Tancredo

OTHERS MENTIONED:
Gore would go in the first group.

Would vote for:

  1. Al Gore
  2. Barack Obama
  3. John Edwards
  4. Sam Nunn
  5. Bill Richardson
  6. Christopher Dodd
  7. Michael Bloomberg
  8. Hillary Clinton
  9. Joe Biden
  10. Mike Gravel

Would reluctantly accept despite philosophical differences

  1. John McCain
  2. Chuck Hagel
  3. Dennis Kucinich
  4. Fred Thompson

Better than no president, I guess:

  1. Ron Paul
  2. Mitt Romney
  3. Mike Huckabee

Anarchy is looking like a better alternative:

  1. Alan Keyes
  2. Rudolph Giuliani
  3. Duncan Hunter
  4. Tom Tancredo
  5. Michael Moriarty

Should I just add Gore to the mix, because of the draft movement? I think he doesn’t want the job, so I skipped him.

Gore still hasn’t definitively ruled out jumping into the race. (I don’t think he will, though, barring a Hillary implosion.)

Deadline to get in the New Hampshire primary was today. Gore’s not running. Unless things melt down at the convention, he won’t be running (and even there he’s a longshot).

I’m leaning toward the Tutuola/Munch ticket.

Okay, here’s mine:

Would enthusiastically vote for, but probably for the wrong reasons:

  1. Clinton
  2. Kucinich
  3. Gore
  4. Richardson
  5. Obama

Would unenthusiastically vote for, and for the right reasons:
6. Edwards
7. Biden
8. Dodd
9. Gravel

Would be sorely tempted to vote for, definitely for the wrong reasons:
10. Giuliani
11. McCain
12. Bloomberg
13. Thompson (only if he promises to stay in character for his whole term. No exceptions)
14. Romney

This space occupied by totally non-viable candidates and/or people I’ve never even heard of

Wouldn’t vote for, for the right reasons:
20. Huckabee
21. Paul
22. Keyes

I have the sense that the OP wants me to ignore electability.

The Right Leaders For America
1 Al Gore
2 Barack Obama
3 Christopher Dodd
4 Hillary Clinton
5 Edwards
6 Bill Richardson

Would be acceptable
7 Michael Bloomberg
8 Joe Biden
9 Sam Nunn

I do not support these candidates
10 John McCain

Insert some crazies here
11 Mike Gravel
12 Dennis Kucinich

Ok back to the list
13 Mike Huckabee
14 Mitt Romney
15 Tommy Thompson (no longer a candidate)
16 Fred Thompson

More crazies and corrupt slimeballs
17 Alan Keyes
18 Tom Tancrendo
19 Ron Paul
20 Duncan Hunter

Authoritarians
21 Rudolph Giuliani
22 Ralph Nader

Wouldn’t consider at all
Joe Biden, U.S. Senator from Delaware –
Hillary Clinton, U.S. Senator from New York
Christopher Dodd, U.S. Senator from Connecticut
John Edwards, former U.S. Senator from North Carolina-- Hah!
Mike Gravel, former U.S. Senator from Alaska
Dennis Kucinich, U.S. Representative from Ohio-- Not even

If I had to -
Barack Obama , U.S. Senator from Illinois–Possibility

Top considerations-in descending order-

Mike Huckabee, former Governor of Arkansas
Fred Thompson, former U.S. Senator from Tennessee
Rudy Giuliani, former Mayor of New York City
Ron Paul, U.S. Representative from Texas
Duncan Hunter, U.S. Representative from California
Alan Keyes, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social Council
John McCain, U.S. Senator from Arizona

Mitt Romney, former Governor of Massachusetts
Tom Tancredo, U.S. Representative from Colorado

Potential Unity '08 draftees:

  • Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City --wouldn’t consider at all
  • Chuck Hagel, U.S. Senator (R-Nebraska) --wouldn’t consider at all

for some reason I thought we were going to vote for SDMB members for president. very disappointing.
