Seattle Doper Trivia -- the 2005 thread

Not a problem.

So, is anyone doing the George & Dragon?

I’m interested. I’ll check back later to see if anyone else is interested.

We’re not in. As mentioned earlier, once a week is about our limit, and I gotta spend some face time with my wife seeing as how I’ve been out a lot for the play.

From the looks of it, though, there didn’t seem to be a big push to move to the Celtic Bayou for a new permanent Trivia Night. Food/beer was good, but the questions were pretty simple (39/50 for us), and no cash prizes. Only gift certificates to Celtic Bayou food.

I won’t be doing quiz at G&D tonight.

Following up on A’cheek, a full reporting of the Celtic Bayou event:

Entrance fee: none. Free to play.

Team requirements: none. As few or as many people as you want.

Prize for winning: no money. We came in second and got $15 off our bill. (Well, a $15 gift cert, which we immediately applied.)

Quiz structure: fifty questions, straight down the list, no rounds, no bingo, no funny business. There was some effort to make the questions topical; they were grouped by category, including “Autumn” (sample: “what does the Latin word ‘cornucopia’ mean?”), “Emmys” (sample: “who won Best Actress in a Drama, what show, and what network,” three separate questions), “Sports” (sample: “which team just swept the Mariners?”), and such. Also note, we started at 8:30 and were completely done by 9:15.

Difficulty: not very. We got 39 out of 50 (and should have had 40 except A’cheek needs to get his hearing checked on the subject of listening to large numbers). However, when the quizmaster read the scores at the end, another team got just 13. So the competition is pretty weak.

Intangibles: Oddly, we scored one another’s results, by means of trading sheets at the end with another team and marking correct/incorrect while the quizmaster read the answers. Turnout was not especially high; there were maybe twelve teams, give or take, which is in keeping with the low stakes and simplistic quiz structure. The food and drink on offer is significantly better than that at either the G&D or the Irish Emigrant. Also, the atmosphere is better; less smoky, more comfortable, not as noisy.

Verdict: worth doing occasionally, when we need a break from G&D’s crappy pub food, but not something we should go out of our way to do regularly. Say, once per quarter, particularly if we can recruit like a dozen of our big-brained Dopers to crush the other groups. But as far as I’m concerned, we’re still looking for our Killer Location that does everything well: good quiz, good food, good location, etc.

Thanks for the report.

I know they’re our arch rivals and all, but maybe we could ask the Elvis team at G&D for some other quiz places? I bet they know a bunch, and maybe they know of more than they can get to – so we wouldn’t always be up against them, y’know?

Anyway, I’ll plan on being there next week, wherever we go.

Anyone know more about whatiz/ername, Interrobairn!??

Okie dokey. I’m somewhat bummed that I missed it, since I do enjoy new things and it looks like it may be a while before we do that one again. Maybe we should look again at other places, such as the Easy Street.

This is the last time I’ll be looking at a computer today, so I’m going to the pub tonight expecting only marque elf. However, I’d be thrilled to have anyone else there with us.

Just to forewarn: I’m really rather tired (pledge drive duties went long last night), so I reserve the option of leaving before everything’s done so I can catch up on my sleep. I probably won’t, but I reserve the option.

I’ll probably be there fairly early, 5:30 or 6:00. As much as it pains me, I won’t go home for computer games before trivia.

We’re in the exciting territory of pre-labor. Regular contractions that aren’t frequent or painful enough to be actually doing much. I’m home from work today; tomorrow we’ll play by ear.

Does everyone dislike the Irish Emigrant more than I do? I’m not nuts about their cash disbursement, but I do slightly prefer their quiz, and their food is far superior to the G&D’s.

Looking around for other places is a good idea, though. Fado downtown has a quiz. And there are a couple of other places I’ve seen signs for. Likely nights seem to be Sunday-Wednesday.

I won’t be a likely quiz participant in the next few weeks, for obvious reasons, but I’m up for experimenting with nights and locales.

I won’t be there tonight, but starting in October it seems I’ll have most Tuesday evenings free, so I can start attending more regularly. (I don’t think I’d go on non-Tuesdays.) I enjoy the G&D, even the lousy pub food, but if the group wants to change locations that’s OK with me.

All best wishes to the expanding Interrobrood!?.

Just noting that I have nothing against the G&D. I like the quiz, and while I don’t often eat the food, I don’t really do trivia for the cuisine.

Saltire, I’m sorry I couldn’t be there last night. Things went horribly awry with my Access bus ride home from work. I didn’t get home until after 7 pm after a 3 hour ordeal. I couldn’t face getting on another bus after what I’d just been through. I ending up going to bed about 8 pm. i’m planning on next week, Access permitting. Again, my apologies.

Is anyone planning to be at the G&D tonight? I’m up for it.

I’ve never done pub quiz at Fado but I can tell you that the food there is excellent!

I’m planning on trivia tonight at the George-n-Dragon. It’s my birfday, so I may just allow myself two pints of cider.

Happy b-day. Unfortunately I won’t be able to attend, as I’ve been invited to see a sneak of the new Wallace & Gromit movie. So I’ll be missing trivia for a good cause, at least.

Pretend I’m there hoisting a cider to you.

Happy birthday, Saltire!

I have a work-related “team-building” activity tonight, so must miss. (Presumably Aguecheek, who is on the same team, must miss for the same reason…but I won’t speak for him…oops, I just did.)

As I mentioned, I think I’ll be attending more regularly beginning next month, maybe next week. I still don’t have all the phobias memorized, though.

While we will be attending, I’m not sure what time we’ll be showing up. Certainly not as early as usual.

And I’ll say happy birthday to Saltire in person then.

I can’t make it tonight – I’ve found a job to apply for, so I have to tweak the ol’ resume and write a cover letter. And I’m fighting a cold, so I need to get to bed early. But happy birthday, Saltire! Have fun tonight – I should be able to be there next week.

We were talking with Cervaise the other day, and he mentioned (and we thought it a good idea) that we go for another Monday trivia this week, due to several factors. Either the Celtic Bayou or the Emigrant are options.

What say you all?

Oh! And good luck with the job thing, stargazer!
