Seattle Doper Trivia -- the 2005 thread

I’m out. If the work at work doesn’t get me, the work at home will.

I can be there this week, but if Aguecheek and inkysplotchy don’t chime in, I’m assuming tonight’s not happening.

In further updates, I’m registering for an ad class that will be taking place on Tuesday nights starting next week and running through early May. So. Either I’m about to miss a bunch of trivia nights, or we need to find a pub that has quizzes on some other night of the week. I know the Liquid Lounge at EMP does Wednesday night trivia, and I’ve heard rumors of other pubs in the area with quiz nights, but I don’t have much more info.

If people don’t want to move nights, I totally understand.

I’m out this week as well. Sadly enough, I’m too tired to play trivia.

We’re out as well. I think I’m starting to catch some annoying cold that’s going around, and if I act now, I might be able to head it off at the pass.

Otherwise, I’m in for a world of hurt.

See everyone next week. Except Interrobang!?, who’ll be off edumacatin’ hisself. Have a good time!

It’s Tuesday again!

Anybody in? E. Thorp’s out. Lady Cheek’s in. I’m in.

Anyone?

Sorry to post so late. I’m in. I’ll see you around 6 or 6:30.

I’m a maybe, and a late maybe at that.

In case anyone’s reading this at such a late hour, I’m running payroll, which is running way long, which means I’ll be unable to attend tonight.

It was a great night. It was only Aguecheek, LadyCheek, and myself. Under the name “Smurf from a Hat,” we essayed the quiz. At the end, it was announced that we had tied another team (not “Elvis”). A few minutes later, it was announced that the playoff would also include “Spear Britney.” We did not win. Neither did “Spear Britney.”

It must be said that on one question, “What famous horror movie actor’s real name was William Pratt?” Aguecheek argued strongly for what turned out to be the right answer (Boris Karloff), while LadyCheek and I insisted he write down Vincent Price. If we’d taken his answer, we’d have walked off with the pot.

On another subject–should we attempt to find another quiz that runs on another night? It would allow Interrobang!? to participate while he has his Tuesday class. I admit I wouldn’t mind a location better served by late buses. However, the discussion among the group last night left worries that most bar trivia contests are less enjoyable and challenging than that at the George and Dragon, so we might spend several weeks trying out other places without finding one we like so much. What say you?

I forgot to add my own opinion: I think it’d be worth trying a couple of other places. One never knows: we may find trivia nirvana somewhere outside of Fremont.

Good job, guys! I would’ve backed up Aguecheek on the Karloff question, but perhaps I’d have argued for a wrong answer elsewhere. Trivia works in mysterious ways.

Also, you know where I mentioned above that my class would be going through early May? I meant June – April 12 + 10 weeks. (I can’t add time, but I can play trivia. Huh.) Granted, some of that May-June time I’d be attending the film festival, but you’re not going to see me on a Tuesday night until June 21.

So far as other pubs go, that is a problem. A few years ago, when we were just trying out the trivia thing, we went to a couple of other pubs with quizzes that weren’t nearly as good. (A couple of them were easier, which was nice…no Elvis.) But I really don’t know what the scene is like these days – I can’t find any single source of info on the Seattle trivia scene. If you guys want to try a Sunday or Monday or Wednesday place, I’ll be happy to attend, but I can totally understand the frustration involved in finding one.

It all comes around, though. Saltire insisted on 12’ for a snooker table as opposed to 9’. Had I not relented, we wouldn’t’ve even tied. So if I’d insisted on 9, the whole Karloff thing would not have even been an issue. So yay us!

I’m up for changing the days for a while. Saltire found a few links the other day, maybe you could post them and we can all poke through and discuss them?

Actually, the links I mentioned to you were all pretty useless. The only websites I can find seem to be about people who like pub trivia, without much info on where and when they do it.

I’ll keep trying.

I just posted a “trivia team seeks quiz night” ad in the Seattle Craigslist activities area. I’d give you guys the link, but it hasn’t shown up yet.

Here’s hoping for some replies. Apparently the Old Peculiar does trivia, but also on Tuesday nights. Bummer.

Any luck on that?

I did find this: http://www.mickeymusic.com/inthenews.html, which seems kind of old, but you guys might wanna look through it and see if there’s anything that looks good.

Anyone in for tonight? We are, and apparently Friend Mark is about “90%.”

I’m gonna try to be there, but life isn’t making it easy. If I can make it, I’ll be there around 7 or 7:30.

That site came out really weird on my screen, but I read the article anyway. Looks like the Irish Emigrant has a quiz on Mondays. I’ve been to that place a couple of times and found it friendly. I’ll try to drop by in person sometime this week to confirm details, and let you all know what I find out.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmaybe.

Sadly, no. But you can read my post if you like.

OK, I found my path through the afternoon passed through the U-District, so I stopped in at the Irish Emigrant.

From the brief description the bartender gave me, it looks like a quiz of quantity over quality. I think it’ll also probably be a louder, more fraternity-like crowd. But the barroom is much larger than the G&D.

It starts at 8 on Monday and they try to wrap up by around 10. The number of rounds varies, but is usually 3 or 4. The rounds tend to have 25 questions in them (he said one round often has 1 answer that starts with every letter of the alphabet).

Teams can have up to 6 players, and the entry fee is $2 a head.

They have $2 well drinks all night on Mondays.

On the bus home, I realized I should have asked about the prizes. With the higher entry price, I wouldn’t be too surprised if they give out second or third prizes.

I also should have glanced over the pub menu, but didn’t think to do so.

I think we should plan to try the Emigrant out next Monday. I hope it doesn’t suck, cause there’s a bus route that goes straight from the place to my house (though I’ll have to wait a while for it, the trip is much quicker than the one I take from the George).

Playing as “Il Papa Smurf” … VICTORY!

Followed by not one but TWO tiebreaker rounds, against Elvis no less.

Next time let’s put it away in the primary round, 'kay?

Also, may I suggest, if we decide to consider shifting to another night, let’s start a new thread so the possible participants who have been ignoring this one won’t miss out.
