Seattle Doper Trivia -- the 2005 thread

I just looked up last year’s thread, because there was a discussion in late October about doing one night at a different pub. Back then, jessicala suggested O’Shea’s Easy Street Pub.

I’ll go scout it out after work today, and let you know what I find out.

The Irish Emigrant is a great bar, but the one pub quiz night I was there for was pretty noisy. I don’t usually go on Mondays though so I just have the one impression to share.

Well, Kit Carson I am not. My scouting mission failed, since the Easy Street isn’t open at 3:30 in the afternoon, which is when I went by.

If I get the chance, I’ll try to go by later in the evening sometime soon. They didn’t have anything about events posted in their windows.

Hey, congrats – I missed the victory announcement. Who was playing?

Also, Monday night next week is fine for me. The following week we’re out of town, so no go regardless.

And Saltire, it’s very cool of you to check all these places out. Thanks.

OK, I went to the Easy Street, and it was open. However, neither of the two people working there tonight ever work Mondays, so they weren’t too clear on how things go. One of them called someone to get some of the answers, but I still don’t think I have too much of a handle on it.

It sounds like it’s pretty close to the same as the George-n-Dragon. 40 questions between 8 and 10. One difference is that they make each team score the sheet of another team when they read out the answers.

Another is that while most weeks they just play for the night, on others they play for 4 weeks and the best team average gets a bigger pot at the end of the time. This coming Monday is the third week in one of those things.

I told the waitress that I guess there’s no reason for us to come in for just one night if they’re in the middle of a tourney, and she told me that sure, we wouldn’t have any chance of winning money, but she’d tell the Monday guys to watch for us and give us a free pitcher. Yippee.

They also told me that the fee is $5 and they generally get 12-14 teams.

I’m thinking the Emigrant still sounds better for next week’s tryout. Maybe we could get into the Easy Street later.

So, is tonight trivia night, or do we do another week at the George & Dragon sans Interrobang!? (Say, your handle works really well at the end of a insistant and questioning sentence, doesn’t it!?)

I think we should have a go at the Irish Emigrant. What say you, team!? (It starts to lose its edge rather quickly when overused, don’t you think!?)

I have missed every one of these updates sinces Cervaise’s post. Don’t know how I managed that.

Unfortunately, I have plans for tonight and as such, would not be able to make it. Apologies.

I can be there tonight, and I would like to try the Irish Emigrant. (They serve nachos!)

But if it would be more convenient for people to wait a couple of weeks, that’s okay – we can just make plans now to do trivia at the Irish Emigrant on Monday, May 9. (Next week I’m out of town, so either place is equally out of the question.)

No one else seems to be saying anything, so I’m going to say this: I’m going to go snag a table at the Irish Emigrant. I should be there by 6 or 6:30. I’ll hope that others will come join me.

If no one else does show up, at least I’ll have seen how things are done there.

That was fun. Saltire, inkysplotchy and I hit the Irish Emigrant earlier this evening. We didn’t win, but had a good time.

Differences:
There were 14 teams, but the place didn’t fill up – well, ever – but until 7:55 or so. Quiz got underway at 8:15 and was done at 9:45.

There were three rounds of questions.

The first round was A-Z – each answer began with the appropriate letter. Except X, which is a 5-point wild card. This lasted about half an hour. Yes, the quizmaster was going very quickly. Requests for rereadings come at the end of the round.

Standings were revealed at the end of the round.

Next round was Trivia Bingo. You get a 25-answer scoresheet and a trivia bingo card. Answer 25 questions, then transfer them to the bingo card, which has a carbon. Turn in the answers and the top bingo card. Answers are read in random order. If you get bingo with correct answers – five in a row – you win half the pot.

Third round was a sheet of paper with about 12 questions on it, worth a total of 40 points. They’re all multiple choice, and worth varying amounts. Get it correct and you add the points to your total, get it wrong and subtract the points, leave it blank and nothing happens either way.

We ended up in 5th place – we were doing okay until the final round, when several teams answered 5-point questions that we didn’t bother to guess on.

The food is better, if a little more expensive.

They have Magner’s on tap.

And…following trivia on Monday nights is karaoke. So we figured that next time we have a dispute about answers, we can wager a song on being right.

We’ll have to try again. Next week is not doable for me, but the following week would be great if people are up for it. 'Cause shortly thereafter SIFF starts, and I’ll be out, as will Cervaise (I think). But then, back to normal!

Y’know, this Monday trivia thing wasn’t supposed to split the team, but I guess we should have expected it when moving between an English pub and an Irish pub. It’s Ulster all over again.

I just wanted to say that if there’s going to be a smurfy team at the George & Dragon tonight, I can’t be there. Hope the rest of y’all have fun and kick butt (not necessarily in that order).

Should’ve answered this sooner, I guess. Lady Cheek would still really like to go, and I wouldn’t mind myself. Anyone else in?

I remain unable to be in, sadly. (Though it seems you’re doing well without me, so perhaps I should just keep my distance.)

However, inkysplotchy was expressing interest last night, so I think he intends to be there. I don’t know whether or not he’s got access to the boards today, though.

Ooh! Perhaps you could let him know that we’ll be there?

I suspect that one of the gadgets in my special Freelancer Bag will allow me to get in touch with him. If not the iPod, then this “cell phone” hickey-doo.

Yeah, I’ll let him know.

Cool beans. Thanks.

Incidentally, I was typing really fast to see if I couldn’t get a response to make sure Lady Cheek didn’t go home first. So I’ll put here:

Hogwash! We miss you, so there.

Unfortunately, I’ll be a maybe again tonight, depending on how long fencing goes.

Well…not our best outing. The guy was on a geography binge and as such, kicked our ass. Capital of Laos, anyone?

That’s the only one I can remember at any rate. Ugly.

Other than the thorough spanking that was delivered, a good time was had by all. Due to the uncertainty concerning inkysplotchy’s attendance, we called a couple of friends that lived in the area and had beer and dinner. inkysplotchy showed around 9 (?) and we continued to give incredibly vague non-answers to about 1/2 of all the questions. We talked ourselves out of a couple of correct ones, but on the flipside, talked ourselves into a couple of others, so it all came out in the wash.

Still, even if we didn’t win, neither did Elvis, so I count the evening a success. Tip of the hat to inkysplotchy for showing after a fencing practice.

FYI - There will be no trivia night at the George and Dragon next week due to some ‘sports’ thing.

So, with no trivia in Fremont on Tuesday, everyone (except !?, of course) is going to come to the U-District to experience the Emigrant on Monday, correct?

I figure I should post this now so plans can be cemented before the weekend.

Is trivia today, no?

I’ll be at the Irish Emigrant around 6. Anyone else? If I see a lot of responses, I’ll snag one of their roomy booths.
