Seen Any Good Movies Lately? A Cinematic MMP

Don’t forget, we have a Whatcha watchin thread.

Jeeeez no, I’m not a doctor (though I play one on the internet) ;). He just assumes everyone should know as much as he does. He appears to be offended if I try to dig deeper.

And a happy Monday morning to all!

Latest movie actually seen at the Theater: Twilight. I liked it much more than I thought I would. I thought it was very well cast.

Latest movie watched on the TV: Fast and Furious, Tokyo Drift. :o I was mesmerised like watching a train wreck. It must have been my inner gear head coming through. It happens.

bobbio, congrats on passing your test!

Appropriate other responses to all.

Evenin’ all. Nice OP, swampus. I never seem to have the time to watch movies - the most recent thing I saw (on the flight from KL to Bahrain) was some Meg Ryan film, to do with her husband cheating on her with the Perfume Spritzer Girl from Saks. Can’t recall the name and I missed some critical plot developments due to toddler-wrestling!

HRH slept through last night (thank Og!), so I am keeping my fingers crossed that tonight will follow the same path. I think she may be getting her last two milk molars through!

Hugs to people whose folks are ailing! Mwah!

Hey, can I join in? I’ve always wanted to. I have time this AM because my MIL and FIL can drive themselves to the hospital to see my husband, so I came straight to work instead of driving MIL to the hospital. It feels weird not to be at the hospital at 7 AM. Hubby is doing better, hurray!

Last movies we watched were Valkyrie (liked it) and Benjamin Button (loved it). I am a movie fiend. I want to see The Wrestler before the Oscars, but don’t know if I can work it out.

Can’t help on the caffiene front; I’m a tea drinker these days.

Happy Monday Morning.

We’ve been Netflixing the Muppet Show, starting with the '76 season, which is a lot of fun. Also, someone let me borrow Adventures in Babysitting, which I hadn’t seen in YEARS and just love. It’s a cheesy '80s movie sort of the female version of Ferris Bueller. Lots of fun. We’ve also been going through a Mel Brooks phase, including Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and History of the World.

Other than that, I’m more of a tv person than a movie person, mostly because I don’t like to sit for 2 hours straight. Plus, when I get to know a cast, I want to watch them over and over, not just for one movie. With books too, I prefer series to stand-alone novels. And I really like the crime-mystery-types like CSI, Bones, NCIS, the Mentalist, Monk, Psych, In Plain Sight, Cold Case, etc. Those seem to make better tv shows than movies.

:dubious: Have you made the requisite [del]bribes[/del] love offerings of barleypop and/or chocolate to the proper Cool Kiddies?

I can get the neighbor’s goat. Someone else has to fetch the squid.

Squid’s on half time/light duty–some union rule.

Right. Get the octopus.
I fainted during the description of Nava’s mom’s nail.

We watched Dark Knight for the first time a couple of weeks ago. And Prince Caspian a couple weeks before that. Those were the first two movies in almost a year, I think, although we’ve watched lots and lots of Buffy, Angel, and Doctor Who.

I went to a clothing swap yesterday. It was an absolute blast. I think I came back from it with as many clothes as I went with, but they’re different, and I like them. So far, at least. There were about fifteen women, two babies, and a couple of teenagers. The hostess’s husband was nervously putting on his shoes when I got there. He ran for the hills before most of the herd showed up.

I have Guess jeans now. I feel sort of stylish. That’s weird. :dubious: Muppet, if there’s another one in six months or so, d’you want to come? All the stuff that didn’t get taken home was donated to a women’s shelter.

I love clothing swaps, Lissla. Some friends and I have one every 6 months and we have enough people that wear the same sizes that everyone leaves with something. Lots of them are brand new things that we get as gifts or those 'what was I thinking?" items that never leave the closet again. When I retired I had a closet full of very nice clothes to bring and it almost started a fight. What was weirder was that I wanted to trade them in for sloppy stuff to wear around the house and to garden in.

Well hot dang if that ain’t a feel-good double feature you had there–be sure to keep the sharp knives away from your wrists for a couple days, y’hear?

That would be the remake of George Cukor’s “The Women.” I liked it quite a bit more than I thought I would, it’s quite different from the sass-talkin’ '30s style of the original but it works, I think.

Sorry, Rigs, but we were all set to like “Mamma Mia” since Himself’s a rabid Abba fan from way back but WTF were they doing casting actors in a musical who can’t bloody sing? Abba’s music is vocally challenging and nobody was up to it, sorry. Well, the cute “Big Love” chick who played the daughter had a fairly decent ingenue voice but the fake & bake tan makeup was disconcerting… I kept thinking “Waitaminute, there’s a goddamned Broadway cast who could’ve been in this thing but NOOOOOO, they gotta have fucking Hollywood!!! STARZ!!! 'cuz they think nobody will watch it otherwise.” Shit, have some faith in your material, sheesh! Then that middle part with the three women playing female impersonators, with a costume grab straight outta “Priscilla” and I just lost ALL suspension of belief. And my god, Pierce Brosnan sings so badly he made my head hurt! Colin Firth was on key but his voice is less than compelling, the other guy could at least belt it out with some style, but Brosnan just, just–he smirksang, that’s what he did! Ugh!

I’d like to see the play done by singers, I think that would be a much more amusing use of time… The scenery was stunning, though–I wouldn’t mind living there!

I watched like half of Season 3 of “Angel” yesterday, it was the only thing mindless enough for me to follow while fighting off a migraine. I get visual migraines and it manifests less as blinding pain than it does as a uniformly horrible pressure all over my cranium, disorientation, vertigo and I have a hard time speaking in coherent sentences. I think now that I have health bennies I’m going to look into these things. I don’t be digging on the migraines.

Well, it’s off to the laundromat, hooray. We really need to make some decisions about what we’re gonna do about the washer/dryer 'cuz this shit gets old. And spendy. It does give me a good excuse to stop at Trader Joe’s, though, and that’s nice…

Blurf.

I don’t watch too many movies, though The Boy and I did watch Quantum of Solace on the weekend. As far as Bond flicks go, it was a solid meh… and I was rather puzzled about the way everyone kept talking about Vesper as if she was the love of Bond’s life despite the fact that Casino Royale appears to occur over a period of a few days… so hardly the lifelong love affair they seemed to make it out to be.

We also watched Slumdog Millionaire a couple of weeks ago after being nagged for months by our friends that it was a super-amazing-must-watch-movie (a lot of people I know saw it at the Toronto Film Festival back in September). Surprisingly enough, it actually lived up to the hype… it really is rather good, as far as coming-of-age tales go and definitely deserves the piles of awards it’s been winning (though I still think *City of God *did it slightly better)

LiLi, a clothing swap sounds delightful and I’d love to come to the next one, assuming I’m not the only one there with a giant size 12 fat ass. I have more clothes than I know what to do with, actually… I was just thinking the other day that it’s time to do a culling of the wardrobe.

So it appears that I’ve been sentenced to a suburban commute for the better part of this week. Again. :frowning: I’m not particularly pleased about it… but New Boss Guy says that’s what he wants and that’s that. On the bright side, I do get to charge my employer for mileage (even though I don’t drive), which means I get a little bit extra on my paycheque for those 4 hours a day spent in transit. Better than a kick in the teeth, I suppose.

Call me crazy, but I’m getting an inkling that you didn’t care for this picture…
I like Momma Mia! until I have to think logically. I can also forgive Brosnan a lot. The only scene where I have to close my eyes because I am too embarrassed FOR the cast is the big dramatic confrontation scene/song (Winner Takes It All). It’s like a really, really bad old MTV video on acid. Meryl Streep chewing the scenery and Brosnan has nothing to do but look constipated. I hate that scene.

The costumes are waaaay over the top, as is the acting and frantic “dancing”–in fact, it’s a perfect storm of shallow tacky and I eat it up like the marshmallow fluff that it is. For me, it’s the cinematic version of slumming.

I probably need to watch it again soon because I find I am falling into the dumps of meh-ness and yuck.

Oh, I forgot, on the plane back from Italy I watched Ironman again, Prince Caspian, and the Indiana Jones Crystal Skull movie. That was a looooooong flight.

Ah, I also have a size 12 ass, so I’m looking to snatch some of your stuff. QD is a depressing size four. I remember being an eight, but it was about twenty pounds ago.

Movies!!

This weekend I watched Across the Universe. I loved it - but then again I believe I was preprogrammed to because I was named after a Beatles song.

Hi all! Been slow to do anything on the boards lately because school started a couple weeks ago so I’ve been so swamped but I am loving it. I’ll be by later or tomorrow to check up on everyone!

You can have my share, Rigs! It doesn’t help that I really don’t like Brosnan much overall, he was a worse Bond than Roger Moore and the only movie I’ve ever almost liked him in was the “Thomas Crown Affair” remake but I think that had more to do with Rene Russo’s extensive nakedness than anything else. Colin Firth, now, HE’S a babe!

You want a feel-good movie? How about “Interstate 60”, which is as cute and romantic a romp as you’ll ever see–guaranteed to leave you smiling? Or my aforementioned fave, “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,” which is funny AND endearing, plus has Terence Stamp playing a transsexual? Or “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day?” You have sons–have you seen “Son of Rambow?” I just had to go hug the grandboy after that one. Or if you’re really pining for a musical, how about the remake of “Hairspray?” That’s just as sweet as can be… Or if you just like that scenery go rent “Summer Lovers” again and soak it up without the bad singing…

Ooh, forgot to mention–congrats again, Bobbio on getting your practical done, great job. Those sounded like horror scenarios from hell, glad you didn’t “kill” anyone!

I loved “Across the Universe,” it was well done and fun. Eddie Izzard can’t sing a lick, so it’s good they didn’t actually require him to!

Howdy Y’all! Home and supper et and I’s relaxatin’. Two down three to go. Tomorrow is my hump day.

<snerk> BBBobbio got farted on! <snerk>

Kalhoun keep after that doc. My father had alzheimer’s plus some physical stuff to boot. The poor docs. Havin’ to deal with mom and sis and me askin’ questions. The primary physcian was great though. He would make sure we got answers that made sense from all the assorted specialists. The heart specialist is a friend from high school so he was no prob. Still, ya gotta keep after 'em. Rebo can back me up on this. So can Nava. Stay on that doc. Don’t give up.

Karyn the 50 Foot Vertically Challenged Woman did tangle up in power lines at the end of the movie. She’s holdin’ her cheatin’ connivin’ no good hubby when it happens. Technically they get electrocuted cause the sheriff shoots a transformer and cause it to blow. Still if you are fifty feet tall, either go around or duck under the power lines. I think that’s the moral of the movie.

Rigs and SmartiePants we all agree that Mamma Mia is no cinematic masterpiece but it is fun! Pierce Bronson’s singin’ is an affront to music on so many levels. The outlandish dancin’ and scenery chewin’ make the movie for me. Plus singin’ along to Abba. Could I get any gayer!

Ok, on to other stuff.

Later Y’all!

I haven’t watched too many movies lately. I have been watching Babylon 5 seasons 1 and two on Hulu(It’s Teh Evil!), and Doctor Who: The Stones of Blood on Instant Netflix. No beagle today.

Hi Brynda! Stop in anytime, it doesn’t matter if you don’t know what’s going on, no one else knows either.

Dotty, congrats on sleeping princesses!

Karyn, I’ so busy with the online stuff, I’ll never get through my 250 movie queue.

VBob, good thing there wasn’t an open flame, or the headline would have read: “Four Firefighters Flambeed in Freak Fart Fire”

You so do not have a size 12 ass. No freakin’ way. But you’re welcome to anything of mine that your putatively size 12 ass can fit into… I’ll give you first dibs.

Not that I’ve been looking at anyone’s ass or anything. Honest.

I’s home from the frozen hinterlands. Based on a quick rummage through the fridge, it appears that tonight’s dinner will consist of roasted sweet potatoes, sauteed chard with garlic and onion, and grilled snausages. Possibly some orange bundt cake for dessert, since it was delicious (will post recipe later, assuming I can remember where I put it).
