Seen Any Good Movies Lately? A Cinematic MMP

Jesus Harold Christ. Financial aid is jerking me around again. Let me show a chart of how:

December: Called to see if I will get aid for the full year since I accepted the whole amount. Received affirmative reply.

January 15: Called to see when the money would be in. Was told three to five days.

January 20-21: University closed. No money.

January 27: Called to see what the hold-up is. Was transferred three times, once to a department that had nothing to do with my question. Spoke to the same person I spoke to on the 15th. Was told she couldn’t transfer my money because I had exceeded the time. Restrained self from telling her that I have another three years to complete graduate school because she’s just a peon and not in charge of that decision. Was told I had to submit another appeal form to get my payout.

Here’s my question: My tuition for the semester was paid by my financial aid. How come the university can get my money and I can’t?

Maybe you need to switch to Disney movies?

OTOH, if you already are watching Disney movies…

Small bit of bad news here… I finally met with a personal trainer at the Y tonight. I confirmed that exercise makes me sick. Nauseous to be exact. Like, it’s 3 hours later now and I’m still queasy.:rolleyes: So, I called and made an appointment with the doctor on Thursday. Ugh. On a bright note, though, the trainer was [married] but very cute!

BusDude I can understand the gettin’ nekkid part but what do y’all do that makes y’all have to rewind afterwards. Or do I want to know…

Howdy Y’all! Three down two to go! YAY!!! I should not type this out loud for fear of jinxin’ it but it’s been a pretty easy week.

CutiePie are you seriously asking a gay man if he’s ever seen Angela Lansbury as Mame? That’s part of the curriculum dear.

Spaz boo on the financial aid stuff! A great way to take your mind off it for a while would be to work on some Agony Aunt Ryl snark… just sayin’… not like I’m jonesin’ for any…

Here’s the trick–the original Shaker hymn “Simple Gifts” was written in 1848 and I think has a very Wiccan flavor to it. With the original words it wouldn’t seem out of place in a circle:

The very Christian version was written in 1963 and it’s a mess–klunky, with scansion about as graceful as a 2.5 legged yak dancing the tango. They make a big deal about the fact that it isn’t public domain and I don’t like the lyrics anyway, so here’s a link to that version.

The pagan version, also titled “Lord of the Dance,” started evolving around the mid ‘70s or so, probably because kids who had to sing the second version in Sunday school liked the music and the refrain, but felt the verses needed some work. Also, Jesus isn’t really known for being a dancin’ shoes kinda guy so I can see a lot of people being a little “WTF?” about the imagery–it’s a tad incongruous. Shakers and Wiccans, on the other hand, are known for incorporating dance into their worship rituals.

The current most accepted versions are amalgamations of work by several people and the song has been polished and perfected by hundreds of individual singers passing it back and forth, and I think we can agree it’s more than passingly improved on its inspiration piece. Here’s the most definitive version I’ve found online–I have several versions in recordings and songbooks collected over the last 25 years that substantially agree with this version so I’d say it’s probably fair to consider it canonical by now.

I’ll credit the '60s hymn for being the seed that bridged the original song to the pagan version but I don’t think it fits well with either and I think the original is closer in spirit to the pagan version–some may disagree, but that’s why there’s chocolate AND vanilla!

I also think it’s much more likely that the pagan version is used as a worship song infinitely more often than either “Simple Gifts” or the Christian version currently so I don’t think it’s a far cry to consider the use of the tune as a quiet shout out to the pagans…

I’m a bad mumper. My neck still hurts but at least I can turn my head a bit. I’ve had no desire to sit at my computer in days.
I’ll be back to normal soon, there seems to be a little more daylight each evening, so I don’t feel like I’m coming home in the middle of the night anymore.
I am dreading tonight’s storm. The snow its promising isn’t so bad as the sheet of sleet that will cover it just in time for the morning commute. Blech.
You all will forgive me if I am scarce this week, right?

Smarty, I prefer the Aaron Copeland version. None of that mucking about with lyrics, just sweet, sweet melody.

swampy, I’m working on thesisizing this week. I’ve got to get my first chapter revisions off to my director this weekend so the snark will probably not appear until Friday or Saturday. In the meantime, you can read about how much I hate The Ladies of Missalonghi. Let this be a lesson to you, kids: don’t plagiarize.

rosie, you lay down and you rest your neck. Come back when you’re feeling better.

Pie, you’re allergic to exercise? That’s cool in a weird kind of way.

Bringing it back to movies, this looks like Frankenstein week at the SpazCat Haus. Yesterday the latest Cinematic Titanic movie, Frankenstein’s Castle of Freaks, arrived and I had to watch it. It’s a 1970s Italian movie that features Boris Lugosi as a poor misunderstood giant whose head looks like “a botched bris” as one of the riffers said. There are a couple of For the Fellas scenes featuring Krista the Love Interest and her friend Maria the Butterface frolicking in water. Sadly, the CT version also features a “breast blimp” that covers up the For the Fellas parts.

So today I check out the 1930s/1940s Frankenstein collection from the library. I need to see Bride of and Son of since I’ve already seen the original twice. I understand Young Frankenstein is based largely on Son of Frankenstein.

Hmmm…I may have to check that one out as well and just make a marathon out of it.

I notice I have Mumpers slowly coming into my Facebook friends list here. Just figured I’d hop in, point that out, and pester the offender.

throws a dirty sock at rosie

That was a very good review of The Ladies, Spaz. I loved The Blue Castle, and even though Colleen McCullough swears up and down that she didn’t mean to plagiarize I don’t believe her.

I know have Lord of the Dance stuck in my head. We sang it at Mass on Sunday (you know, the music was better when I was Anglican), and it’s embedded in my brain. Thanks
Traumatic doctor’s appointment with needles tomorrow, for the little guy, argh!

Work was slow. Went to the Cool Bar to watch the Canes lose.

Does Cuervo still get jiggy with his stuffed friend? Y’all could have a menage á quatre.:smiley:

Smartie, that’s a nifty video.

Dad has been having what look like panic attacks. One last night, and one this evening. I looked up the side effects for one of his meds, a topical steroid for this itchy rash he has, and it says “insomnia.” He will be discontinuing the medicine. It says “apply a thin coat” - and it’s very thin and oily, but I think I have been applying it a bit too judiciously. He has this rash over a large amount of his body, though! :frowning: Poor thing.

I’m tired of medical issues, please.

Snow day, sorta. Daughter’s off. My command is opening at 10. When I took the doggies out, it was wet on the paved area. The snow had a crunchy crust, but I don’t think driving will be an issue. So in a little bit, I’ll drop **FCD **off at his office, then I’ll run some errands till I have to report at 10. Bonus for me - yay!

It’s supposed to rain here all day, and get to the upper 40s. The snow will mostly melt away, I’m sure, and it should stay dry enough that the rest of the week will be no biggie.

For the record, I’m not a big fan of winter. Regardless, off to shower and get ready for my day. Happy Wednesday, all! Good thoughts to ReboDad and {{NurseRebo}}

MWAH!

Muppet, are you sure you work in Canadia? That list of meetings sounds like the ones here.

Back to tables. Yesterday Sheboss spent over one hour driving three of us nuts about “but you have to be able to split Nava’s work into smaller chunks!” “no, it’s not possible.” “but you have to…”
Heboss got called in; he didn’t understand it either but he believed me (Sheboss has trust issues). Then Guy-Who’s-BTDTGTTS got asked and said “no, it’s not possible.” “But…” “Listen, the only Grandma you still haven’t asked is Supermegaboss, want me to call her?”
No, she didn’t.

Today she wanted me to know about parts of the work that are Not Mine At All, any work I have to do about that is “put in what the person in charge asks me to put in.” Sort of like expecting someone from Maintenance to know about Sales Orders.

We’ve been meeting all morning. Now I’m going back to tables. It’s sad when tables feel like relief…

Obligatory blurfs.

Today is Small Claims Court With Sharon the Felonious Housekeeper, Part Deux. She was in a detox unit last week, and is supposed to be in custodial rehab this week, so we don’t know if she’ll even show up for court. Sucks to be Sharon right now, but that’s something she needs.

TTFN.

G’morning! Caffeinating here, at home, since I put in a leave slip yesterday for today. From what I’ve seen on the tv news and outside my own place, everything is covered in ice and it’s especially dangerous on the sidewalks. So yay for making the right decision to -not- try to go to work today!

{{{{{{{Rebo}}}}}}}; sending healing thoughts to your Dad, and good thoughts your way also.

Hope everyone stays safe today!

Okay, I just caught up, but I retained nothing. I am up late partly due to it having been 2:30 in the ay em before I got skiffman out the door and had the house quiet and to myself. He is so not liking this two households situation, and ya know, that is kinda the point.

Happy belated to FCM, I got lost over the weekend, and am just coming back into focus. No, not a binge drunk, although I got pissed at the dr.'s and the pain from my stupid tooth that I blew off taking the new prescription for antibiotics on Friday and went out. I made the sushi dinner date in good form, but I began the afternoon with rum at The Rendezvous where I ran into a former school principal tending the bar! She mixed me some wicked fruity rum beverages. After the sushi date I ended up at Tony’s, which is the last remaining old time Kodiak bar. There is a sign above the door outside proclaiming that Tony’s is the Most Dangerous Navigational Hazard in Kodiak. And it is. But I managed to walk to the cab, got myself home and myself into bed without incident. Then my tooth said “Oh yeah?” and has been kicking my butt ever since. I have been taking the keflex regularly, which is the other part of why I am up so late, I took my 3:00 am dose, and will catch a nap after my 9:00 am dose, and get a nap in before the 3:00 pm dose.

I missed a couple of days, and tonight water aerobics just about killed me. We are growing into a fun social group from all of Kodiak’s social layers. I was designated to burn some cd’s for us to work out to, the instructor’s bite, and she admitted it. When I kidded about her trying to drown me (all I’m gonna say is pool, pool noodle, and crunches) the two guys in the class immediately piped up with, in unison, “We won’t let you drown, we are The Coast Guard!” They were so serious, I couldn’t let them see me giggle, but it was so cute!

Well, I am going to get back to Roland and Jake and the slow muties, so you all have a good morning!

Mornin’.

A snowstorm blew in overnight, which made today’s commute… errr… interesting. The Angry Russian (who was kind enough to give me a lift today) and I ended up rolling into the office about 20 minutes late, but since New Boss Guy still hasn’t arrived, it looks like I’m technically early… that is, assuming he didn’t spontaneously decide he’s working from downtown today because he didn’t feel up to commuting in the snow, in which case he’s technically a humongous jerkwad and I’ll technically spit in his coffee.

(me? bitter? naaaaah)

{{Rebo}} Sending feel-better-soon vibes to your dad. Poor guy. :frowning:

Good luck in court, Vundie. I hope Sharon shows up and that you can give her dishonest ass a good kicking (in a legal sense, of course).

Nava, don’t you know that ProjectLand spans all borders, nationalities and faiths? (The Angry Russian jokes that we’re just professional masochists minus the cool leather duds… the sadists, of course, all work in the PMO)

Grrrrrrr, I keep getting logged out for no reason.

Anyhoo, this is turning out to be TEH WEEK THAT SUX!! That’s all I’m going to say about that.

Appropriate yays, boos, tsk tsks, etc. to all who need them. Alla y’all in the path of the storm, stay warm, dry and safe.

Tupug

Hi All! I’m caught up, but don’t remember much…Rosie’s sig to all.

FCM reef sculpture sounds like the awesome. I expect pics.

I just have to say, size 12 is not fat. Cut it out.

I’m trying to train people to cover my job responsibilities and such-like for my impending lay-off. It’s hardest to tell my vendors, I think. They’ve been great though- one of them is taking my resume to the recruiters at his company, and the others offered to do whatever they could to help me. Those guys are awesome.

May have a lead on a job, but there are 20 applicants for one position, so it seems like a long shot. Had a phone interview yesterday that I didn’t realize was going to be a phone interview–I thought she was calling to set up a real in-person interview.

Plans for a Boston Dope Fest seem to be coming along. That’s cool.

My head is going in 15 different directions right now. Ugh.

Oh and snow sucks. I can’t get rid of the remains of the last storm before getting another. I don’t want 8 more inches on the ground.

The tables have been wrestled to the floor and mashed mercilessly. Now I have a list of questions about fields that I don’t know whether they’re used or not. I also have [strikethrough]a victim[/strikethrough] someone who’s got to help me with those questions, and someone else (quite high up) who’s very happy that I’ve identified some of those Missing Tables… they knew there were tables they should have deleted and hadn’t, but didn’t quite know in what corner :smack:

Reverse engineering. They never told me about it in school, for some reason :stuck_out_tongue:

A memory triggered by that masochists joke. My cousin was a professional mountain climber; he died last year (like he lived, up in the mountains). The newspaper where he wrote, in association with our local government and edited by his family, have compiled his letters and articles into a book. In one of the first articles, he tells this anecdote (rephrased, I don’t have the book here):
