Selection of the new Democratic Presidential Ticket

The FEC Chair is a Republican, but by statute the FEC is composed of 3 Republicans and 3 Democrats, and it takes a majority of four for the Commission to take any action. So, FEC Chair Sean Cooksey can opine however he likes but it has zero impact on what actually happens. But it can still be challenged in court. They’d probably have to find a Biden donor to sue in order to have standing.

That isn’t important at all, now. He’s been recently given a clean bill of health, so what is there to prove?

It must be Harris and I expect it will be Harris.

At least one of my guesses was right - this decision was already made. I expect it was made days ago. If so, I’m certain the Democratic party leadership and elites already have a plan on the works, and whatever they say publicly, it will almost certainly lead to Harris as the nominee.

Moderating:

Do not introduce Bernie Sanders into this thread. It is not germane to the discussion, only serves to inflame passions and will create a hijack.

If they send back any of my Biden donations, I’m just going to double it and send it to Harris. I hope I’m not alone.

This is indeed a valid concern. But millions of misogynists who voted against Clinton aren’t around to do it again.

I agree that this can be a huge positive. The “cognitive” debate has now shifted decisively towards the Dem candidate and unenthusiastic youth voters may return to the fold. Never forget that over half the country thinks Trump is unfit for office.

Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett shitting on her colleagues for pushing out Biden and saying that she’ll ONLY support Harris.

I understand the funding issue favoring Harris, but she is not an inspiring candidate. She’s not particularly intelligent, not charismatic, and has the stink of Biden on her. Best to move in an entirely new direction with a bold choice.

It’s going to be Harris. Bill and Hillary Clinton just enthusiastically endorsed her. Rachel Maddow said there’s no question the party will unite around the VP. (And I assume she’s been talking to everyone she can over the few hours).

In general, going by the 2020 Democratic primaries, I’d say that Harris is probably the least likely among that bunch to put off too much of the silent majority.

That said, there’s not much in her history to suggest that she’s a particularly effective leader.

I think the real answer to Trump is, like in 2020, to simply be the party that best represents the idea that there’s an actual adult somewhere who’s going to be serious and do the job of a professional.

Harris leans that direction but she doesn’t fully sell it. Pair her with Steve Bullock, Chris Sununu, Jami Miscik, etc. and I’d say that you’d have a lot of support from all the people who are currently disillusioned with the party system. There’d be a clear and unequivocal signal that, at least at the national level, that the Democratic party isn’t going to be the party of weekend Antifa web dweebs and wild eyed college professors, and nor is it going to be a party looking to shake down property developers to pay up to the party or “surprise eminent domain solar panel farm”.

Be the good guy and you’ll get good results.

Hard disagree on all of this, but probably best to discuss it in a future Harris vs. Trump thread.

Say what you will about Harris’s weaknesses–I think she’s actually quite strong in all pertinent dimensions–but perhaps we can agree that she is the perfect foil for Trump:

  1. Woman vs. misogynist who picked a flagrant, flaming misogynist as his VP.
  2. POC vs. racist who has coddled and solicited the support of white supremacists.
  3. Prosecutor vs. lifelong criminal fraudster grifter scum.
  4. Young and in great health vs. falling apart at the seams mentally and physically.
  5. Real and normal in her speech and appearance vs. orange clown freakshow Nuremberg rally.

I’m sure there’s more. It really couldn’t be better than this!

The speculation about who will replace Biden on the Democratic ticket is just news media filling up time.

There can be no other candidate but Kamala Harris. To even consider skipping over her for someone else is a delusion. It would destroy everything that the party stands for. We will have a week or two of speculation, but it can only be her.

So Harris vs Trump is the ballot choice that everyone will have. Can she win against Trump is the only question now.

Basically agree. And yes, she can IMHO.

Realistically, we’ll have to see. Trump’s idiocy and trolling can throw people off.

In theory, yes, she should come out looking good next to him. Probably she will. But there’s some chance that she implodes on stage and the general voting public just decides that she doesn’t have the gravitas to lead.

If I was her, I’d be hiring a coach to help me practice my Saint Crispin’s Day voice.

It sure seems like a long time since I heard any criticism against Biden other than his age. Just like that, that issue has disappeared, with a potential candidate more than 2 decades younger.

It will be interesting to see how the 6 or so battleground states respond. I gotta figure she’s pretty much a lock in the previous solidly blue states. Meanwhile, anyone with a brain knows the issues/platforms make it an easy choice… How racist/misogynist is the US in 2024?

OK, nice start.

That’s from 2019, by the way.

5 years on and don’t need to change a thing.
