Semen Retention

Is there any truth to the idea that retaining semen during orgasm has health benefits for men? Is it possible to have an orgasm and retain semen? Is orgasm bound to ejaculation?

About the only health benefit I can see to this is not getting your girlfriend/wife pregnant. Babies seem to take it out of you…

Beyond that I’ve never heard that before.

I assume you are referring to Tantric sex, and the male “retaining his Chi”. It always seemed like kind of a load to me (pardon the pun). Of course, I’m no doctor, but I can’t imagine how it could be benficial. Blueballs just can’t be good for you. :o

The answer is…hell YES orgasm is bound to ejaculation! There’s only one way to orgasm w/o ejaculation, and that’s if the guy has already orgasmed/ejaculated half a dozen times already in a short period of time and just has nothing left. I know this because it happened to someone I know (not me, unfortunately.)
Since it’s impossible to orgasm w/o ejaculating, than the question of health benefits is moot. If a guy says he orgasmed but didn’t ejaculate then he’s lying, end of story.
Of course, then the question becomes WHY would would he lie about it? And what kind of woman is such a lousy lay that whatever poor sap is with her can’t get off no matter what he does?

Oh, and to answer your second question, yes, it is very possible to not come during orgasm. I can’t fathom why anyone would choose to do this, but it certainly can be done.

Retrograde ejaculation, or the idea of pinching off the urethra so the semen never escapes the body, has often been claimed as a healthy action. If you apply pressure to the corect points it is possible to prevent the semen from escaping during ejactulation.

The idea is this: Semen conatins protein and carbohydrates, that material could be better served if the body reabsorbed it and used it for something else other than staining the sheets. The problem with this thinking is that it contains about 2 grams worth of protein and carbs, a miniscule amount. A bite of white bread contains more protein and carbs than does semen. There’s nothing inherently unhealthy about retrograde ejaculation, but it also caries zero health benefits.

Uhh…Wrong.

You can press up and in (I don’t know the medical term for this) under your nuts while you orgasm, and it will not come out.

Supposedly, using Tantric sex methods, you are able to train yourself to do this automatically.

As I recall, this is discussed in the Joy of Sex. Why there, I don’t know because it’s not especially joyful. It’s really rather unsatisfying. The semen backs up into the bladder, I think, and is excreted with the urine.

Ok I had to step in here. Pinching the bottom of the shaft preceding orgasm is done so you can extend your session. Trust me i’ve done it for years, but you gotta let the load fly out at some point. Why? because to have a healthy prostate gland you gotta release the fluid pressure built up in there. Mabye not right away, but you gotta blow your load, all that pressure in an older man left static could possibly lead to prostate cancer.

Orgasm & ejaculation are seperate events, period. There is no scientific evidence about the prostate thing either.

As for semen backing up into the bladder, that is funny.

Actually, I think it does go into the bladder if it isn’t released through the natural pathways. Did anyone else catch the Tom Green Cancer Special on MTV? Although I hesitate to call this a totally reliable source, for those that don’t know, Tom Green had a testicle removed due to a cancerous tumor, and the doctors then told him it may have spread to his lymph nodes, so they wanted to slice him open and check. One of Tom’s concerns about the surgery was in regards to his ejaculatory functions, because a doctor had advised him that in some rare cases there may be some nerve damage during the surgery. He said that damage to the nerves in question would prohibit proper ejeculation, and without these nerves functioning, the semen would be forced “backwards” into the bladder upon orgasm. So this would probably indicate that the pathway to the bladder is the default path when the proper exit is not available.

Anyway, like I said, it’s just a TV show, but then again, it was a real doctor that said that.

Guess someone should ask Sting about this.

or was it Woody HArrelson. One of them said they’d done it.

Type retrograde ejaculation into any decent search engine and you will be rewarded with more knowledge on the subject than you would ever want. I looked through several of the medical sites with information and none claim that it has health benefits. Most of them mention Diabetes, medical drugs and surgeries as the cause of retrograde ejaculation. The sperm travels into the bladder where it is later released with all the rest of the urine. It makes no mention of being reabsorbed. Which kind of makes sense, reabsorption of anything by the bladder kind of defeats the purpose of the bladder as a waste holding facility. Most of the sites regard it as a harmless problem with the exception in cases of men having fertility problems.

From Columbia.edu - Male Dysfunction
"RETROGRADE EJACULATION
DEFINITION
Retrograde ejaculation occurs when at orgasm the ejaculate is propelled back into the bladder rather than through the urethra and out the tip of the penis. Retrograde ejaculation in itself is a harmless phenomenon. If fertility is desired, however, this condition must be corrected.

CAUSE AND DIAGNOSIS
Retrograde ejaculation occurs most often in males with diabetes (due to impairment of nerves in the bladder and bladder neck allowing ejaculate to flow backward). In fact, it may be the first manifestation of abnormal sexual function associated with this disease. Additionally, certain medications, especially those prescribed for mood alteration, may cause ejaculatory abnormalities.

TREATMENT
If this condition is caused by medication, it may be corrected when medication is discontinued. Oral medications that help contract bladder neck muscles (such as Sudafed) may help. Otherwise, sperm may be retrieved from the bladder for artificial insemination."

As to it’s connection to prostate surgery try this Rush.edu medical encyclopedia entry

“Ejaculation, retrograde (i jak y* la"shn, ret"r grad). Retrograde ejaculation is the discharge of semen into the bladder rather than into the urethra and on to the outside. This condition frequently occurs after prostatectomy, the removal of all or part of the prostate, the gland that secretes a lubricating substance used to transport sperm cells.”

funneefarmer, but its a rare condition & not something your average guy is going to have, like the OP was talking about.
