True Detective season 1, Woody Harrelson, Mathew, Matthew McConaughey
I like the actors and decided to watch. Weird is probably the best word. A detective fresh out of a mental hospital gets assigned a serial killer case?
How could that possibly go wrong.
The actor’s performances are very good. I like mixing in political pressure from up on high. It’s only 8 episodes. Seen 4.
I’ll finish it tonight.
I may skip season 2 with a different cast. The reviews aren’t good.
I wasn’t crazy about it either, halfway through. We continued watching to the end mostly out of inertia-- we didn’t have a lot of other 1/2 hour ‘filler’ shows we could watch if we weren’t quite ready to go to bed yet, but didn’t want to commit to another hour-long drama or movie.
It actually gets better- without spoiling too much (i’ll still blur, but a fairly minor spoiler), most of the characters have a redemption arc and the ending is fairly upbeat.
I think if you watch it not as a fulll-on comedy or a mystery, and more as a character study / drama with hints of comedy, it works better. Kind of like what some have said about ‘Man on the Insisde’-- not that they are very similiar shows on the surface, but in the sense that they both have comedic elements but are not really full-on comedies, and have a mystery that’s not really the central aspect of the show either. They are both character-driven shows.
Just watched the pilot of “Going Dutch”, a new comedy starring Dennis Leary and Danny Pudi (Abed from Community). I was hoping this would be good, since there seem to be few good new comedies lately. But I also typically have low expectations in general for new comedies, since they are so often just so bad.
I’m happy to report, not terrible! I actually LOLed a few times.
I liked both seasons and they were good in different ways. But personally I thought the musical parody elements of season 2 were a bit weaker: having an arch satire of a musical that’s already an arch satire (like Chicago or Sweeney Todd) is a bit of “a hat on a hat” (compared to a satire of something more earnest). The parody of Pippin/Godspell/Jesus Christ Superstar was pretty good, though.
EDIT: I said as much in the dedicated thread for season 2.
I’m watching an amusing sitcom on Max called “The Bookie,” a wry, cynical and profane show about a southern Cal bookmaker doing business in the traditional manner.
I do get bogged down in that because (unlike Star Wars or Star Trek) it pretends to try to be realistic. Just like I’m not bothered by “a literal demon did it” in a show like Suoernatural but it would piss me off if it was the solution on a show like NCIS.
