We made it about three into the second season. I think it was also discussed here. But a lot of us bailed at this point. No idea what was going on and why and it just sort of lost the plot once the showrunner was fired.
I think Gaiman got the showrunner fired and took over a lot of the work. I used to be a fan of him waaaay back when he did Sandman, and I read every issue, but that was 50% brilliant and then later on mostly crap. So I’ve not rated him since. Not read the books for the same reason. But I was not surprised that the quality dropped a lot when Bryan Fuller was gone and Gaiman was left out of his depth.
I’m now into season 2 of “succession” and thoroughly enjoying it.
I made mention of the similarities to “the thick of it” and the more I watch the more that becomes apparent. It is a comedy far more than a drama and the dialogue and interactions between the siblings is pure DOSAC bickering and backbiting.
(can’t recall the swearing rules but I’ll play it safe)
In the last episode Tom cheerfully reported that he had been called “The c*nt of monte cristo” which is pure Malcolm Tucker and neck-and-neck with “Noncey Sinatra” or “Shitehead Revisited”
I get the feeling that the cast had the absolute time of their lives filming this.
I’m rewatching GOT and am nearing the end of season 5. It’s every bit as entertaining as the first time around, but they were really into nudity more than I remembered. I don’t think there’s been a single episode without partial or full nekkid going on. My only real complaint is the way that actors feel they need to whisper their lines in order to make them seem more dramatic. But that’s my complaint with a lot of programming in recent years.
We finished The Chestnut Man and really enjoyed that. We’ve started Katla, which is an Icelandic mystery/supernatural story. It reminds me a lot of Dark.
Just finished watching the True Detective anthology, seasons 1, 2 and 3. How did I not know of that already? Jeez is that good. It’s so good it will stay in my head for a while.
My most recent re-watch: the “Long Way Round/Down/Up” trilogy. The series follows Ewan McGregor and his best mate Charley Boorman on their epic transcontinental motorcycle journeys. Beyond the adventure and fantastic scenery, there’s genuine friendship and great teamwork that gets them through some tough spots.
I really enjoyed season one of The Morning Show, but I haven’t been as dedicated to catching season two. Not for any reason other than that I really liked Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and I was hoping for more about her character Hannah, and the fallout from everything. And I don’t think that’s gonna happen now.
My wife and I can have strong north-eastern accents (espeicially when interacting with relatives) and my kids were born and raised in the south-east with a very “posh” accent.
We end up getting the piss taken outof the way we speak and I’m sure they could use captions from time to time.
For fans of The Detectorists, the next of Mackenzie Crooks’s series, Worzel Gummidge, is continuing with three more episodes. For those unfamiliar, this is a remake of a 70s series, though both are really adaptations of a book, about a scarecrow who befriends two children. It’s ostensibly aimed at kids, but it’s just as sweet-natured as Detectorists, and makes me smile.
Also, today’s new episode has Toby Jones as a guest star.
My DIL is from the Liverpool area. Even though she and my son have been living in the US for the past ten years, her accent is still really strong. Her daughter from a prior marriage made a concerted and successful effort to lose her accent because of the crap she was taking from other kids at school. I can’t detect any traces of it now.
I just watched the first episode from Scenes From A Marriage. Don’t know what to think of it yet. On one level all the characters are insufferable. On the other, it’s well done and the very first scene in which Jessica Chastain gets into character on the set of the show is very original and creative. (At least I think that’s what happens…)
Also, Corey Stoll is one of my favorite actors so I think I’ll stick with it as long as I can tolerate the painfully self-involved dialogue.
For tv to watch when exercising I am on and off again watching The Lost Symbol, which is what it is.
I made it through 1/2 an episode of Brave New World on Peacock TV, way to much sex to plot advancement With 9 x 45 minute episodes for a 300 page book it doesn’t look promising.
So back to another season of All or Nothing with the Michagan Wolverines 2017 this time.
Yes, one that really bothered me, was when Elizabeth dropped that car on an unsuspecting guy just to create an opening in his company so her asset could take his position.
Still, as the series progresses, they are having more difficulty dealing with the killing.
We actually enjoyed Brave New World… there is a lot of sex but the story does start moving and though it’s been literally 30 years since I read it, I think it was a least faithful to the basic premise of the book. Harry Lloyd was particularly good in it.
