Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

It is an extremely popular show with a 96% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. There is zero reason to feel as if watching it is a dirty little secret.

We’re watching Irish Blood on Acorn. It has problems, but it’s okay. The Irish cop helping the hero is a very odd-looking person, almost to the point of being distracting.

If you haven’t already seen it, you might like Ally McBeal.

I watched him in a dumb little made-for-streaming movie called Ricky Stanicky. I was impressed by his comedic chops, as well as his willingness to look foolish.

i watched the first few seasons…then they got away from court room hijinx.

The Survivors (2025, Netflix, 1 se. 8 ep.) My wife and I are on our last episode and it’s pretty good. Set in present day Tasmania a small town is struggling to come to grips with a tragedy that happened over a decade ago and a young girl is still missing. About the trauma of loss and redemption on top of a stock who-done-it we have enjoyed the ride.

Still room for a twist at the end but even without that it was worth watching.

If law shows can include police procedurals, you might check out Angie Tribeca. It’s essentially an updated Police Squad. Psych is also really good as well.

That movie was partially made next door to my house. And yet I did not manage to meet any of the cast.

Finally got around to watching season 5 of the animated Harley Quinn on HBO Max.

Enjoyed this very much; it’s somewhat lower-key than previous season, and is centered around a Brainiac arc combined with the question what if a handful of Gotham villains moved to Metropolis, not for any nefarious reason, but because Gotham kind of sucks?

Superman is largely absent—taking a wee sabbatical—but Lois Lane and Bruce Wayne (not appearing in Bat garb at all) are major supporting characters. The Clayface and King Shark threads get a bit tedious, but by and large I enjoyed this a lot, and the voice acting, especially Haley Cuoco and Lake Bell as Harley and Ivy, continues to be top notch. Bane is always a hoot, and the Joker is surprisingly effective as a guy who is still obviously evil, but for the time being is largely content to just stand around, mock and kibitz.

Chicago Fire

this has me engaged right from the get go tho a tad soapy/
one reason I’m watching

Steven Strait, who played James Holden in The Expanse, joined the cast of Chicago Fire as Flynn Calhoun in 2024

Damn 14 Seasons hope it’s worthwhile…so far okay - edging on soapy but it paces really well.

One reason it’s so engaging…guy is good
Dick Wolf is producerr - Law n Order in his CV amongst other ….shows

My wife and I are watching Love Con Revenge (6 episodes) on Netflix where the woman from The Tinder Swindler teams up with a private investigator to gather dirt on guys that scam women out of their money. It’s pretty cheesy but kind of satisfying.

My husband and I LOVE all of the Chicagos. We’ve watched from the beginning. We’re excited for the new season to start.

The final (what turned out to be only 4) episodes for a show that has been a little uneven at times but overall we still thoroughly enjoyed it. I did feel the first season or two were the best but it didn’t dip as much as the IMDB episode ratings might have you believe, in fact I was pleasantly surprised how much we enjoyed the final 4 episodes, although (blurred for major spoilers)

The ending proved to be a SERIOUS downer. I would not have predicted that a show like this would have killed not just the main character’s best friend but also the main character (i.e. original Nathan) himself! I think Luke in particular was done a disservice in how quickly he was offed, with only Aleesha showing a little bit of sadness about it.

Presumably the budget was slashed for the final season so rather than stretching it thinly they decided to put it into a shorter run. A shame it ended like that as it did feel a bit rushed. I hope I see some of the actors in other things as they were good fun and quite engaging. I am also fantasising about going to the hotel they used (although I am guessing the outside scenes around the grounds were probably not the same place as the overhead shots of the hotel). Maybe one day!

Anxious People, Netflix. Swedish adaptation of Swedish author Frederik Backman’s book about a bank robbery/hostage situation. 6 episodes, the first four were comedic in tone, but the final two went more poignant. Inna… who has read the book… says that a lot was changed for the series (for example, the book was largely a two-day affair in two settings, the series was a week+ series of events in multiple locations). It occurred over the New Years holiday and not an inch of snow in sight, which was weird for my preconceptions of wintery Sweden.

Recommended.

Oooh, I had no idea they adapted it for TV! It’s a wonderful book, as is pretty much everything Bachman writes. Forelornly optimistic.

Mrs. and I just finished season 1 of Resident Alien. It’s one of the shows where the premise sounds too hokey to work, but it does - if for no other reason than to serve as a framework for pretty good writing.

General comments: the editing, or perhaps the storyboarding, was weird. Around episode 3 a dead guy was found on a “thing” (trying to avoid spoilers), but then they never showed that setting again, nor even brought up the subject for several episodes. Also, particularly towards the end of the season, one of the lead ladies sure is fickle on the I hate you/we’re best friends relationships, to the point of making of mockery of the character’s journey and feelings.

Spoilers for the season 1 ending:

Golly, a lot of suspension of disbelief needed here in the last couple of episodes. His ship was damaged in the stratosphere (lightning maybe? I don’t recall), rendering it completely unflyable and hurtling towards earth spewing flames and smoke, then crashes - hard. But in the last ep he just adds one little part, powers the thing up, and he’s off? And, as alluded to in a previous paragraph: Asta: I hate you! You are trying to destroy the world and everyone I love! We can never be friends! (20 minutes later) Harry, I AM your friend…don’t go!

Anyhoo, we very much enjoyed it overall, and would recommend it for non-serious fun. Now to check out season 2.

We just finished watching Ripley, on Netflix.

Spectacular.

Filmed in black and white, the cinematography is incredible. The location scout deserves an award - they have found the most amazing locations in which to film a series set in 1960. The acting is spot-on, with the eponymous character being played as a psychopathic cold fish. If you liked The Talented Mr. Ripley, you will love this.

6 out of 5 stars.

Couldn’t agree more; I found it riveting. Even if there is a glaring plothole (spoiler) why did they never bother to check (and publish!) a photo of Dickie earlier?!

Ripley brilliantly done.

Bingeing Mayday ..I’m a disaster hound anyways and a one time pilot so appeals. I’d hate to have to watch it with commercials but rolls along fine without. While I’ve seen some of the coverage with the amount of episodes there is always new or updated content…not a program for anyone with fear of flying.

Amazing what some survive and the forensic process figuring out what happened.

Gave up for a bit on Chicago Fire as the soap got a bit annoying but the cinematography is terrific and I like the medical aspect. Wolf knows his stuff….

Wednesday on Netflix (last ep watched No. 3 of Season 2). Absolutely perfect. Great mix of great acting / lines, humor, storyline, and special effects. I love how Jenna Ortega manages to keep the same expression throughout the whole series.
