Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

I watched the first episode of Young Sherlock last night on Amazon Prime. It stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin, nephew of Ralph and Joseph, as the titular character. It is created by, and the first few episodes are directed by, Guy Ritchie.

I really enjoyed the first episode. All the episodes dropped at the same time, so I will probably binge all 8 over the next week.

It was OK. I will continue as well since I liked the Guy Ritchie Sherlock movies.

Once again, Moriarty is more interesting than Sherlock.

I love that Joseph Fiennes and Hero Fiennes are in it, both related to Ralph Fiennes…the main Voldemort actor.

Not sure how that connects them to this show, but here we are.

So did I, but I’m not sure I will continue. It’s in danger of becoming more Rowling than Doyle, and it annoys the Hell out of me that nearly all the important characters in the Holmes canon are apparently living and interacting in Oxford when Holmes is a teen. Guy Richie is really hit and miss with me and I’m guessing this will be a miss.

Did you like his two Sherlock movies? I loved them.

This, however, was not as good as either, at least not the first episode.

That makes it a big NOPE for me, along with watching the trailer and thinking it was a Guy Ritchie parody, which turned out just to be Guy Ritchie :frowning:

Yeah, that was a fantasy stretch.

A show about Holmes earlier cases, before he met Watson could be interesting.

We also just watched the first episode. My wife will continue watching because she wants to know the outcome, but I found myself bored. It’s all very Ritchie.

We tried RJ Decker- Fun cast, fun “florida man” stuff, but the first episode did not endear me.

Of course we know a convicted Felon cant be a PI in Florida- or most states. But besides that, him on a crusade in the very first show is too much.

But still- my wife wants to give it another try, and it could turn out good.

I’ve been bingeing on so many TV series lately I should be embarrassed.
Untamed (Season 1) seemed OK – I like detective stories – but was too complicated: there are almost 30 distinct characters relevant to the plots. (I suppose the “big name” actor was obviously going to be Who-dunnit, but I didn’t even recognize the actor!)
In desperation I sometimes just rewatch episodes of series I DID like.

I almost gave up on The Best in Me also, but for a different reason: I don’t like Horror.
But I’m now in the middle of Episode 2 and the protagonist’s agent “hasn’t seen that look in [her] eye in a long time.”

So I’m going to continue watching! I hope it doesn’t disappoint.

There’s also the 1985 film Young Sherlock Holmes. It’s not a lost masterpiece but it’s a decent go nonetheless.

The most dated plot point I’ve seen so far is a subplot in season 4 where Dr. Del Amico finds a kid’s Tamagotchi (although they were also playing Doom 2 in an earlier episode).

Am finally getting into Trapper John, M.D. (that CBS 70s and 80s medical hit w/the late, great Pernell Roberts in the title role, et al.) from a bootleg set of the full series I got recently (which consists mostly of old FX reruns, back when that Fox-affiliated cable/satellite network had those reruns), and so far, so good– as medical series go, it has more for me than any modern medical series would have ever had (meaning that, IMO, ER, Grey’s Anatomy, House, M.D. and The Good Doctor would not have been things I would have enjoyed).

The reason I got this bootleg is because Trapper John, M.D. was originally from TCFTV when it was on CBS in the late-70s to mid-80s on Sundays, and now it’s under the purview of Disney, and we know how Disney is with anything that isn’t modern Disney or modern Fox (or modern shows and pictures, for that matter).

Despite my best efforts I was unable to avoid all of Love Story. My wife was watching it. I generally hate any Ryan Murphy melodrama and this is no different. Bad writing. Bad acting. The only positive I can think of is the actor looks a lot like John Jr.

I knew Daryl Hannah would be angry about it and I was right.

Day of the Dead

Canadian Syfy Channel hokum from 2021. I just finished episode 2 and won’t be tuning in for more. Not one likable character, all the budget went to zombie FX.

And it stays intense all the way through. Great show, but often very hard to watch.

I absolutely loath him, as well. It was really hard for me to watch most of the first season, but he seemed to have less and less screen time as the show went on. Then, I really got into it.

We just started S3 over the weekend. We can usually only watch two episodes at a time. The six year jump between S2 and S3 caught me off guard at first.

Unpopular opinion (maybe) Happy Valley was complete at the end of S1, there was no need for further seasons and it shows.

Crap Happens or Kacken an der Havel (Netflix)

It’s a German comedy series (which is funny because I never thought Germans did humor. Badum tish), it has a lot of absurdism and surrealism, which I can appreciate. An aspiring rapper returns from Berlin to his wacky hometown for his mother’s funeral. His family is wacky, his stepfather is younger than he, and he meets his son that he never knew. There’s a bit of Schitt’s Creek in it with the wacky town. There are 9 episodes and I haven’t seen the final one yet but it does get frustrating that many of the characters make dumb mistakes or goofy choices that prolong the issues. I thought many of the jokes were clever though and I had a couple legit laugh out loud moments so if German surreal humor + wacky characters + duck out of water is up your alley, this may be for you.

Venerable UK TV series Call The Midwife ended* this week. It was not a great episode, and capped a not very good season. Very jumpy, weak storylines, no emotional heft, inconsistent character behaviour. If they decided to end it properly, it was time.

*Well, sort of ended. There will be a movie, a prequel series, and also a continuation in a new setting that will be transformed so much from its original it will essentially be a different show

That show (Call the Midwife) lasted a really long time. For the most part, very heartwarming.
