Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

Oh I LOVED that show! I wish it had gone on for many more seasons.

Is this thread only for series we’re watching for the first time or are re-watches allowed?

If re-watches, then the Castlevania series was 95% great. The second season was…patchy, but the last made up for it.

I bestow my blessing on all forms.

We plowed through Inventing Anna, a not-biopic about Anna Delvey, a young woman who scammed her way into the top financial circles of NYC. She is a real enough person, but this series got way too cute with things, IMO. And I really don’t like the actress Anna Chlumsky, who played the reporter (but not really) who unraveled Delvey’s story. Her constant mugging is annoying in the extreme.

We got a free trial month of Showtime, just to watch We Need to Talk About Cosby. While we have it (and we’ve never had Showtime before) we decided to binge on some of its offerings: so we’re a few episodes into Ray Donovan and United States of Tara. Enjoying them both, although it’s unlikely we’ll finish (especially all 82 episodes of RD) before the month is up.

Regarding United States of Tara…actors must love playing characters with split personalities. They get to act the hell out the part.

We’re one episode into the super dark but kinda funny, Severance on Apple TV. I won’t give away the premise because the best part of the first episode is how it sets up that premise. Adam Scott is the lead and it features John Turturro and Patricia Arquette in supporting roles. Christopher Walken is credited but has yet to appear.

Gilded Age (HBO). We were big fans of Downton Abbey, and so we eagerly anticipated Julian Fellowes’ next show. It’s … ok.

It’s about the conflict between New York Old Money, and the nouveau riche-- tres, tres, riche (in real life, represented by the Astors and the Vanderbilts respectively). The problem is that the 2 respective matriarchs are thoroughly unlikeable characters, and we don’t care who wins their little pissing match.

Is it just me or is the HBO Max app a buggy piece of crap? I can never get into HBO without it throwing up an error message or freezing.

The Cuphead series is great if you’re a fan of the game and/or that style of animation. Short, charming episodes.

Just watched Season 4 of Unforgotten, a UK police drama dealing with old/cold cases. I assumed it would be the final season since a lead character died at the end, but I heard there will be a fifth season

I agree. Also, if they were going to pick someone to play a femme fatale, it should have been someone who doesn’t look like a younger version of the Wicked Witch of the East. But yeah, I don’t care about any of these people, but my wife is a fan of period pieces and she really likes Christine Baranski.

I really liked the first season, The second season dropped big time in quality. I gave up a couple episodes into the third season, really really bad.

This show really sounds interesting, and it’s on my list, but the cast is putting me off watching it. Turturro and Arquette in particular just seem to rub me the wrong way. If you remember, can you give us your opinion when you finish?

I still haven’t watched anything since Reacher a couple of weeks ago. I have to step up my tv watching game, I’m falling behind everyone in this thread.

Yeah, in season two he moves to LA from NYC but is somehow able to transport his plexiglass prison to his new address. And this is a guy with no money.

Midnight Mass (Netflix) - Gave up in the middle of the third episode of this limited series. Ugh. The long sermons annoyed my Atheist sensibilities, the tiresome ‘conflict of faith’, and ‘hope in dark times’ themes just made me groan out loud at the ‘Chicken Soup For The Soul’-ness of it all. I think I could have struggled on in spite of that however, in the end, after 2 and a half hours I didn’t care about any of the characters or the ‘mystery’. With so little return on investment that was all it was going to get from me. The scene that broke me was in the school where the Muslim Sheriff and others confront the religious teacher about distributing Bibles. I felt like I was watching a High School play written and directed by 16 year olds, hackneyed amateur hour crap.

Nine Films About Technology (Hulu) - despite is lackluster title, this series was a quality set of loosely related vignettes ranging from a lighter Black Mirror (Grey Mirror?) to a more serious take on the Asian American experience in North America (kinda like a dark Kim’s Convenience). Some were gross, some funny, some sad. At 10-15 min a pop they’re a great evening appetizer.

The Serpent (Netflix) - 3 episodes in to this limited series. A dark period piece about some shady characters in Thailand in the 70’s. I don’t want to ruin anything, but my wife and I like it so far.

Finshed watching " The AfterParty " on Apple .

It was a fun , well paced whodunnit? In each episode everyone tells their story from their point of view.
Not a tough nut to crack, all the information is there , so a satisfying end.

I’d just like to give a shoutout to Queer Eye (Netflix). (In a prior incarnation with a different cast it was know as “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” but now the subjects are not necessarily straight or guys.)

The premise, for the few who’ve never heard of it: 5 experts in varying areas descend upon a nominee, to give him or her a makeover: fashion, grooming, lifestyle, home, cooking.

The 5 stars are just so darned nice, and the beneficiaries are so happy (there are usually tears of joy at some point) – it makes a wonderful palate cleanser after something like Ozark.

We finally started Succession and are 5 episodes in.
I’m trying really hard to find a redeemable quality in anyone on this show. Shiv (so far) comes off as an out-of-touch self-centered rich girl and not an out-and-out asshole like her siblings. And Cousin Greg seems decent enough, but he’s just such a mope. And those are the best things I can say about anybody. Everyone else is just plain horrible. It’s well-written and well-acted and all; I just don’t much like spending time with these people.

Mrs. Wheelz is really liking it, though, so I guess I’ll stick with it for her sake.

You are right- there are no redeeming qualities of a single member … I’m obsessed with it though, one of my favorite shows. The dialogue is great and the acting especially of Brian Cox, Sarah, Snook, Kieren Culkin & Matthew McFayden (once I got past his missing accent) is really intense and satisfying.

I didn’t solve it before the reveal, but in hindsight all the clues were there, although easily overlooked in a pile of red herrings. The show doesn’t use any of the cheats some drawing room mysteries do.

Yes! I love this series. I loved the original, but I like this new group better. They are darned nice! The stories are all very touching.

I am currently introducing my wife to the pure adolescent joy of American Vandal on Netflix. It’s hilarious and just a spot on parody, which shockingly great performances from the entire young cast. I loved it the first time and I still love it the second.

I thought season 2 wasn’t nearly as good.
