Seth McFarlane to Host Oscars

I’m there! rustling taffeta gown Just wish I had somebody to watch it with.

He wrote the opening song for his movie Ted (performed by Norah Jones).

I quite liked the song and even as the opening credits were running, I knew I wanted to check the credits to see who it was. When I saw that he wrote it (lyrics, music was written by Walter Murphy), I immediately felt I’d like to see him get an Oscar nom for it.

I don’t know that the song itself got any “buzz”, so people might forget it come nomination time if there isn’t a campaign for it. Still, it would be interesting to see him get a nomination while he is host (I don’t expect a screenplay nom for him, but would like to see the song nom).
I’m sure at some point in Oscar history there has been a host who has also been a nominee the same year as hosting. Anyone know?

Heck, the aforementioned James Franco was up for an Oscar the year he hosted.

MacFarlane is a serious devotee of old Hollywood. Family Guy’s spoofs draw heavily on classic movies or movie genres, be it musicals, gangsters, Rat Pack, etc. If he can tone down the funny voices and poop humor, I think he actually might be a great choice.

I looked this up once before, when it was asked about James Franco.
Michael Caine co-hosted in 1973 when he was a Best Actor nominee for Sleuth.
Walter Matthau co-hosted in 1976 when he was a Best Actor nominee for The Sunshine Boys.

Ever heard the old saying, “You could be the most wonderful human being who ever lived, but the turnout at your funeral will still depend on the weather”?

I say that to illustrate a point I make every year at this time: people don’t, as a rule, give a rat’s behind about the host! Large numbers of people tune in when movies they loved are up for major awards. They tune out when the major awards are obviously going to movies they didn’t see or to actors and actresses from movies they didn’t see. A great host won’t help if there are no popular films up for big awards, and a bad host won’t hurt much if there ARE some.

If ***The Avengers ***and ***Les Miserables ***are nominated for Best Picture, and both are seen as having a real chance of winning, the ratings for the Oscars will be throught the roof! On the other hand, if the Academy nominates 10 critical darlings from the arthouse circuit (as they have in recent years), NOBODY would watch if John Lennon and Elvis Presley came back from the grave to co-host the show.

I’m a big ***Family Guy ***fan, I loved Ted, and I think McFarlane has been a funny, likeable, charming host of Comedy Central roasts. But I wouldn’t watch the Oscars just to see him host.

If Hugh Jackman is up for Best Actor, HE’LL attract far more viewers than McFarlane possibly could.

From the article linked in the OP:

That has got to be one of the more bizarre sets of musical credits ever for a song…lyrics by a comedian / cartoon director, music by a composer best known for a disco version of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, and sung by Norah Jones. Weird.

Somebody on Twitter summed up my opinion better than I could:

“The Oscars are a bloated TV program with no fresh content and maybe two jokes that land the entire time. I can do that.” – Seth MacFarlane

Bring back Bob Hope (those were the days!)

No, I’m not 103 years old, why do you ask?
Roddy

Faaaaaaames! Faaaaaaames!
(Because they’d have to be…oh, never mind!)

Another vote for Jimmy Fallon. Of all the people working right now, he’s the closest to Carson, in that he’s clean-cut, he’s never built his career on snark (like McFarlane). Also, he can sing, and he’s a keen mimic. And, of course, he’s got the youth market. Sign him up and he can host for the next 20 years.

I would and will. I can always turn it off after his opening monolog. Or I could choose to continue watching.

Same here; their pandering bid is working. In general I think the Oscars is staid, irrelevant and up its own ass but I like McFarlane a lot (yes I’m aware that my descriptors are how many here see McFarlane himself :P).

As far as I’m concerned, the Oscars always have been, are, and always will be relevant in the way they can bring much-needed attention to unknown films, actors and craftspeople. At its heart, it’s not about the glamour, glitz, movie stars and host, it’s about the films and the craft behind the films.

I have no opinion about Seth McF other than, anyone’s better than Billy Crystal. I only know of him from Ted. I defer to those who’ll think he’ll do a good job. I do hope one of these days they’ll let Neil Patrick Harris host.

I don’t usually watch awards shows, but I’d watch for Craig. (With or without Geoff Peterson.)

I don’t watch oscars like many here.m. The family guy guy made a really funny show, but he’s a fat piece of shit from what I have seen from interviews who thinks his shows are his creations, as a painter to his painting. He has no more to do with fg than whoever thought about breaking bad does to that show – not an auteur.

That Fallon guy could be ok I guess. He’s not a bad mimic, and at least he’s not some fatass wannabe ‘friend of all gays’ what with his very impressive knowledge of crap musicals with a bloated ego to match the size of his deeply gifted throat.

sotto voce Psst…you’re supposed to drunk-post over at Giraffe’s place, not here… /sotto voce

Using a tablet, Holmes. My points are clear, concise, and articulate. Also, correct. Why don’t you go junior mod somewhere else, or start a pit thread?

Here’s McFarlane singing “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head” with a full orchestra. Yes, he has juvenile sense of humor, but he’s also really into old Hollywood (as has been mentioned.) Yeah, I think he’ll pretty well. Could be the best in years.

Interesting McFarlane trivia - he was supposed to be on one of the planes that hit the World Trade Center on 9/11 but he missed his flight due to sleeping past his alarm.
