The OP asked about songs actually played on the radio. I assumed that meant mainstream radio. There’s been a number of the songs mentioned so far that I can not believe would ever have seen play on those stations (or even most university stations, for that matter).
That said, I have to mention a true “radio hit” in Alice Cooper’s “Muscle of Love” (1974 - from the album of the same name). Oh, sure, it’s about the heart. Oh, I’m having chest pains. Must lock myself in the bathroom. It’ll take me a while to get the top off this aspirin bottle, okay.
(A friend and I once spent an entire two and a half hour road trip just coming up with euphemisms for masturbation. Cracking the whip.Peeling the banana. We were really scraping the barrel my the end of the trip. Scraping the barrel would have passed muster by that time. )
I’ll also add that AC/DC’s “Shook Me All Night Long” was the junior high-school “sock-hop” song when I was in my early teens. Of all the songs - current and classic - ever played at dances throughout high-school, that one was always played. And I graduated from high-school in 1994!
Gainsbourg, with Jane Barkin. The full title is “Je T’aime … Moi Non Plus”, BTW.
I don’t believe we got this far without mentioning Brown Eyed Girl, but I’m pretty sure we did. “Makin’ love in the green grass/Behind the stadium with you” is one of the most notorious couplets ever - it got radio edited after a few complaints.
Which reminds me of Get Off by Foxy. Sample lyric: Take of that red dress that drives me crazy
So we can get off
Sensuality excites my mind
It makes me get off
If I were you I’d get a good perspective
On how to get off
Love me wild and love me crazy,
So we can get off
Though never played on the radio, Gangster of Love by the Geto Boys has to be one of the dirtiest songs ever. You can find the lyrics here. (Warning: extremely graphic lyrics!)
Meh, came in here to suggest “Dinah Moe Humm” by Zappa, something by Lovage, and the man who inspired Lovage, Serge Gainsbourg and “Je T’aime Moi Non Plus” (which got an Italian record exec excommunicated because it is so racy…) But they’d been mentioned. BTW, when I babelfished the lyrics to “Je T’aime Moi Non Plus”, here’s what I got – for the French speakers, is this accurate? If so, it’s just groooosss:
to
Zappa deserves another mentioned for his rather blunty titled guitar solo “I Promise Not To Come In Your Mouth.”
So those have been mentioned, here’s some radio songs that have made me feel dirty:
“Sugar Walls” by Sheena Easton
“Back that Azz (Thing) Up” by Juvenille
“Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-a-Lot
and of course
“Me So Horny” by 2-Live Crew
(all of which I have heard on the radio…)
Believe it or not, there was a radio station around here that used to play songs like that (It was one of those obscure, hard to tune in ones you find between your favorites). I taped that song (it was years ago) because it was so disgustingly bad-at 14, the realization that the radio would play something like that was just shocking.
