I read phouka’s post today
( http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=204510 ) and I really felt bad for him, Eric and all the people who have to deal with a sensless death of a young man.
Some people posted just their condolences, added a personal note, or even shared a story of loss.
I think all of us left that thread thinking what a shame and why? All of us except for an insensitive jerk, cole burner, who questioned evolution vs. creationism. CB that really just is stupid and inappropriate. Why on earth would you hijack something like that? Don’t you realize that your opinion wasn’t asked for and that the people who read what you write have feelings?
Well, that’s all well and good, and I don’t mean to be harsh here, but should we really be telling our children that we landed on the moon? I mean, the shadows are going in different directions, and you can’t even see the stars! I won’t even mention the infamous pig aliens NASA expects us to swallow unquestioningly.
But seriously, judging from the first few sentences, I thought it was going to be a joke. Nobody could hijack that blatantly, could they? …Then he kept going.
I bet he’s a real comfort at funerals, telling the bereaved how it’s just evolution. “Hey, I’m sorry your kid died of cancer, but he was too weak to beat it. Better luck on your next offspring.”
What he said was bad, insensitive and probably selfish at the least.
At least he didn’t get so crass as to say outright that “… was culled from the herd and deserved it…” as I was told in another thread a while back.
Sometimes religious people sometimes can be so thoughtless.
BTW never say “God wanted/needed him/her more than you”. It hurts very much.
I agree the guy was being a prick…but where are we getting that he just wanted to hurt people who do not believe in Biblical creationism? I’m confused… He spouted off something about evolution and some nonsense about which should we teach in schools but where did he say that the kid died because we don’t teach creationism? Maybe I’m just missing something?
I think he is just an idiot and a (that word we dare not utter about little thingys that live under bridges)…
Aries28, what pissed me off was the idea that the kid was culled from the herd because he couldn’t hack it, and why didn’t we teach our kids that that’s evolution in the real world.
I quote- "I am sorry, but that’s exactly what evolution means. Sometimes kids die because they can’t cope." What a tool.

andros I actually got the opposite vibe. I think he was asking if the OP believed in evolution and natural selection, and if he did, then he should simply accept this event as a result of selective pressures. I didn’t see his comment as advocating creationism at all.
I’m not certain whether cole burner doesn’t believe in evolution, or does believe in it but has a very simple-minded idea of how it works. Maybe he makes that clear in some other thread, but I’m not inclined to go mining for more nuggets of wisdom.
Dear God, why didn’t I realize it before? The solution to our troubled youth is to throw out all those evolution books, based upon silly things like ‘facts’ and ‘evidence’ and replace it with good old Genesis!
