I agree with you here. All I am saying is, in THIS CURRENT environment, those genes decreased his reproductive viability. Maybe in some other environment, he’d be king of the hill. But we’re not in that one. We’re in this one, where those genes led to him dying without passing them on, an evolutionary failure by definition.
Yes, it does. Maybe their recklessness is a real help in some other environment, maybe I’d be a dead duck in that other environment and the tables would be completely turned. (But you’d never hear me whining and meweling about it, that’s for sure). But that sort of speculation is pretty useless since we are here in this environment with no dramatic changes in sight.

You know, you’re exactly right. Everyone in this thread is just upset because you’ve posted an irrefutable fact, and not because you were acting like an irritating little pissant.
If your point is that the kid died due to a deficiency in his genes then it’s incumbent upon you to prove that you’re right. I suspect, since all your evidence for this assertion came from your ass, that you cannot do this.
Also, you say that you accept that genes that are detrimental to survival in one environment could be beneficial in another. Many, many different environments exist concurrently in this world. If this kid’s genes were responsible for his drug problem (and you have NOT proven that’s the case), then you must accept that those same genes could have helped him out if he’d had a more suitable environment in which to develop. Perhaps a more supportive home life, or a cultivated interest in sports or music, but I’m just guessing here.
The point is, if you were to isolate every gene that contributed to his drug problem (which I’m sure you could do. You’re an evolutionary biologist, right? :rolleyes: ) you might find that you shared some or all of them, but due to your environment, you didn’t turn out to be a drug addict. But according to you, I guess it would be perfectly just and right for you to go out and fry your brain to death in PCP. Because then, y’know, it would keep you from passing on your defective genes, right?

But as I said before it was out of line because the OP didn’t ask for our ideas on why it could’ve happened.
