(Define as you see fit)
I’ve been eating these lately. Love them.
It’s only unorthodox because it never occurred to me to try it. But I have, and it’s good, and it’s healthy.
Apples and cinnamon have gone well together forever, and I finally tried it in the most basic form.
I quarter an apple, then core the pieces. Each quarter then gets sliced into three wedges, which are then cut into two chunks each. On a plate, they get a generous shaking of good cinnamon. With a sliced banana I can stretch that into breakfast and lunch.
Damn tasty.
Pork tenderloin jerky.
Seriously, beef is unaffordable to me right now, but pork tenderloin (store, mass market tenderloin granted) goes on frequent sale for $1.99 or $2.49 a pound. It’s very lean, and even after dehydration comparatively tender. I slice and then soak in a jar of decent salsa with surprisingly little additional salt since they’re all in a saline solution. When I have the time, it’s a homemade salsa verde which is even better.
So a flavorful, low fat, reasonably salted jerky for around $8.00 a pound when done.
I’ve tried tilapia and turkey jerky as well, but the tilapia ends up distinctly fishy and rock like, while turkey has a better texture and similarly low fat, but the turkey flavor carries through.
For something more sweet, and rather less healthy, though a great treat I make sweet potato brownies on occasion (I skip the extra chips for topping through)
Last but not least, I make these (with almond flour) for long car drives when I need something with some staying power but slightly less sugar and “stuff” than most power bars.
On second thought, I’m not sure the latter two are really unorthodox the number of keto or low-carb diets out there.
I was told there would be no math.
Triscuits with brie, except since I almost never have proper fruit preserves …. those little packets of duck sauce from the local Chinese takeout make a dandy substitute.
They’re basically apricot jam.
You can take a small tortilla, place one (1) string cheese atop - okay, unwrap the cheese out of the plastic first - then nuke for about 20 seconds. Roll it up real quick so the melting cheese holds the tortilla closed, then enjoy your lazy-ass redneck quesadilla.
I’ve eaten plenty of those!
I like refrigerated noodles sprinkled with Parmesan cheese for hot days. Boiling the noodles can be done at night, and during the day it both satisfies hunger and cools me down nicely, without needing any cooking or fancy preparation in the heat.
And it isn’t as fattening as ice cream; I like ice cream of course, but if I ate it as often as I eat noodles I’d be a sphere.
Radishes. I buy a bag at Trader Joe’s and snack on them at work.
Triscuit, a couple of those greasy smoked oysters, dry Italian salami and a slice of Mozzarella cheese.
Have to be stacked in that order to keep your fingers from getting messy.
These:
Every person I’ve introduced them to - including my wife - has balked at trying them. And then shortly thereafter asked for more.
Herring in wine sauce on Triscuits. Except that the last few times I’ve bought them (Vita brand) it seems that the jars are more sauce than herring.
Hmm, that sounds amazing!
I’ll have to check those out. How thick is the chocolate coating?
I’d try those!
Are chocolate covered sunflower seeds weird? Cuz they’re tasty, but they definitely ain’t M&Ms.
Also chocolate covered gummy bears. Strange texture combo, and you don’t know what flavor gummy you’re about to get. It’s the candy version of Russian Roulette!
… but damn if I can’t plow through a bag of those.
We buy expensive bread; a slice of that, toasted, just as it comes - that’s fine by me. Sourdough with Potato, Rosemary & Nigella Seeds, from a local bakery, is the current fave.

Type 2 - Damn I miss bread…
Yeah, bread is a tough nut for diabetics. Save those carb points. Have a slice. Of course unless you can convince someone else to eat the rest of the loaf, it’s wasteful.
I eat sugar cubes. I know, I know it seems contraindicated. But it is an exact amount that my pea brain can calculate. I know exactly how much I can’t have. And when.
That’s unorthodox, perhaps. Non healthy unless your BG is low.
Isn’t it an advantage that the turkey flavor carries through?
Eh, while I don’t actively dislike turkey, it’s not a favorite for me. Plus, I’m in the aggressively-chili-forward faction. So that’s what I want to stand out as a flavor. Mass market pork, like mass market chicken, is pretty mildly flavored.
I do love the flavor of beef, and so it would be my preference, but pork is 1/4 (or less) the price of beef, so it’s what I’m using mostly these days.
Whereas if i eat chili at all, i want to taste the meat. ![]()
And out of such wonderful, diverse tastes, many an unorthodox meal comes into the world!
Which reminds me, I haven’t made Lox and scallion/red onion maki sushi in too long. Hmmmm…
Where do you get those?
I’m trying to think of unorthodox snacks i eat, and I’m coming up blank. I did chew on a raw ginger root for a few weeks when i was under a lot of stress, once. But it wasn’t really a “snack”.
