Shaved pubes

A friend sends me tons of soft porn in the form of photos of nude women.

Most of the women have at least partially shaved their bushes. Many are bald as a cue ball.

Once he sent me a collection of Playboy playmate of the year photos going back into the '70s. Bushes were a no-no in the early Playboy photos. A space alien would have had no idea that women had pubic hair.

However, at some point in the later 70’s, Playboy decided to reveal pubic hair on their playmates. (quite some term there-playmates) One can only imagine the endless discussion and meetings that must have preceeded this giant leap for mankind.

Anyway, iniatially, the playmates had pristine unshaved bushes. By the later 80’s the bushes began to be shaped with a razor. This became more extreme in the 90’s to the extent of almost complete baldness.

Now then, the question is whether this is just a porn thing or if women are actually getting haircuts, bushcuts, and even bald cuts of their nether beards.

Do you or women you know generally shape their bushes? Have bushes gone the way of underarm hair in advancing the plucked chicken look? If this is happening, why?

Are we or will we get to the point where it is considered as uncouth for women not to shave their pubes as it is to not shave their underarms?

Is this a generational thing? I never saw this in my generation. I’m 58. Back in the day, if you reached down the front of a woman’s pants, you could be sure to get a handful of hair.

Oops. Looks like this should have been posted in IMHO.

I’m 32 and more or less a hippie chick, so my impressions are probably quite skewed. However even a quite large contingent of hippie chicks is shaving at least the stuff of the inner thigh and perhaps leveling off the top of the triangle in front. Not bare, by any means (although I’ve seen that as well), but trimming is definitely in vogue. More hippie chicks seem to have shaped pubes than shaved legs! And hippie porn (yes, there is such a thing!) claims “unshaven”, but still seems…sculpted, if you will.

I can only imagine that there’s even more radical deforestation going on outside the hippie chick community. The huge array of bikini waxes, sugars, strips, lotions and potions at Walgreens would seem to support this theory.

Don’t mind me. I am only here for the Google-ads.

But of course Playboy people are models. They are not normal in appearance. I would not want to draw a conclusion about most women from observations of a small number of them.

In terms of porn, it began during the peak of VHS porn in the late 80s, early 90s, to make sure everything was on display. Since then, it’s become expected partially because the only place most people see other naked women is via porn. Those who don’t consume porn will more likely not shave themselves so cleanly, though there are exceptions - many think it feels better or believe it’s more hygienic.

MOST women do not shave. If you dehair (which I don’t think most women do) generally either trim or wax. Shaving is rather “uncomfortable” when it grows back. Waxing is uncomfortable when its done. Of the women who do shave or wax, there is probably a huge difference based on age - i.e. I’m 40 and most of my girlfriends wouldn’t - but when I was 20, I know a lot of women who did.

(Google brazillian wax. Then say “ow, ow, ow”).

A lot of women - even women your age, wax or shave the “bikini line.” - important in a swimsuit if you don’t have tidy pubes. Generally, again, wax. Razor stubble there is not great.

Oh happy days they were

When muff diving was like eating shredded wheat, with salt on :stuck_out_tongue:

My gf (we are in our 40s) does a nice trim, leaving a small “landing strip”. In the warm months, she gets a bikini wax.

There are threads on the Dope in which a large number of people of both genders proudly proclaim bald groinal areas. To me, naked boy bits look like icky raw chicken bits and naked wimmen look like people who haven’t yet hit puberty. In other words, not very appealing. However, it seems an awful lot of ladies have few qualms about paying strangers to rip all the hair off their pubes.

It’s hard to search for the relevant threads because they often have ‘wax’ in the title and the dumb ‘we’re not searching for short words’ rule means you can’t find ‘wax’.

In my extensive research of Playboy nudes (the things I do for science) I’ve found the opposite to be true. If you compare one of their Lingerie editions, where they’re using professional models, to one of their College editions, where they’re using semi-amateur models, you’ll find that the professionals have more pubic hair than the non-professionals. It appears that college co-eds (at least those willing to pose nude) are more likely to “go bald” than professional nude models are.

Speak for yourself!

FWIW, all the women I personally know trim at least a bit, but don’t take it all off, whereas all of the strippers I see during business lunches trim it way, way down or all the way. Can’t remember ever seeing anything that could be really termed a “bush” on stage, in fact. So maybe they fall within the Playboy/porn realm sorta.

Shaving is the way of the young people. Everyone I know at least trims. I look at my gym and most of the guy are now shaving under their arms. Trimming your pubic area makes your “endowment” look bigger and is better for oral sex.

It’s like waxing or plucking eyebrows, what guy under 25 doesn’t do this. I didn’t like it at first but now it looks odd if you don’t. Kind of like the goatee thing. It is the way, I look at reruns of old TV shows and how cheesey having just a mustache looks. I guess it looked OK to people in the 70s but to me a goatee is normal and a mustache looks weird.

He meant most Dopers– not most people.

As a 29-year-old guy, I’ve never known another dude who waxed or plucked his eyebrows.

It’s an under-25 thing. Normally we wouldn’t discuss it with an old timer.

Anecdotal only, with a small sample size (which is all we have unless someone can point to a scientific poll or paper or some such).

Women I’ve been with have bushes. One in particular trimmed it so it didn’t get out of control but she mostly left it intact – only trimming the edges so there wasn’t a sprawling jungle.

another one who shaves and trims. my hair in *general * grows like it’ll outlawed tomorrow, so diligent grooming is a must.
