I have a memory, from many years ago, of hearing an interview with Davy Jones of The Monkees (back in the days when they were a TV show and, sort of, a going band) in which he declared that he did not need to shave, referring to himself as a “cleanhead” (I am not sure if that should be one word or two). Can anybody confirm or refute this factoid? Are there otherwise normal men who never have any significant beard growth?
Wikipedia and Google have not helped me. I just seem to find references to jazz musician Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson (whose issue was quite different) that happen to be adjacent to references to Davy, or else references to the song “Daydream Believer” that Davy sang - probably one of the very few hit songs that actually mentions shaving! (The fact that Davy sang this does not, I think, bear on my question. He did not write the song, and I don’t think that Anne Murray had a beard either.)
I think this qualifies as a GQ, but if mods feel it would go better in CS, that’s cool.
It’s not that uncommon for some men to not have to shave very often when they are younger. When I was in my twenties, I twice tried letting my beard grow for a couple of weeks. It was pretty pathetic. Only by my thirties was there enough growth for it to be worth shaving every day.
I suspect that it has to do with how young a man looks in general. I usually pass for younger than my real age. I’m currently listening to a course on DVD about the composer Brahms. He always looked much younger than his real age. It was only when he was 45 that he decided that the beard he could grow really looked right, so at that point he let his beard grow and kept it for the rest of his life.
