Shaving Thighs

I am a fair-skinned (okay, transparent) woman with not a lot of body hair and I do the obligatory leg and pit shaving. I only shave my calves though. I’ve noticed that some women shave their entire legs. Why? Is the thigh a hairier place than the calf? I wonder, if I had never started shaving as a teen, would my calf hair be as fine as my thigh hair. My thigh hair is pretty much unnoticeable.

Why, ladies, do you shave your legs?

IMHO??? Move if needed!

This does sound like an IMHO, but you should realize that shaving does not change the thickness (or darkness, for that matter) of hair:

As for why one would shave the thighs? Others are not blessed with as unnoticeable hair as you, perhaps, or enjoy the feeling of totally smooth legs, or just think they should, or their partners might like the feeling of smooth thighs.

Why do you think, sweetheart?

I shave my thighs because I get coarse black curly hair on them (usually just on the back and near the pantyline.)

Let me reiterate: shaving does not make your hair grow in thicker.

I don’t shave my thighs, either. The hair on them is extremely faint, so I don’t think it’s necessary. (My hubby is the only person who sees my thighs, anyway, and he’s not complaining.)

There is a product out there which is awesome for that faint hair which you feel you have to remove but don’t wish to shave. It’s a very fine-grain sandpaper. I know it sounds weird, but it works like a dream. I don’t have the name brand, but I’ve seen it sold in K-Mart. It’s shaped in a little mitt you can slip over your fingers and sand away. It’s not painful at all-- more like a gentle pumice. And it makes your skin feel incredibly silky and soft.

No, it’s got nothing to do with shaving. I’ve never shaved my legs in my life, and my thigh hair is pretty much invisible, while my calf hair is definitely darker and longer.

Because it makes my leg soft and silky smooth…all the way up.

I also shave my toes, but I tend to the hirsute.

Pale skin, dark hair, a good bit of dark hair.

I have noticed I only have to shave my thighs about half of the time I shave, but I am one hairy chick if I let the leg hair go. I’d be happy to, but frankly, I don’t want to stick out that badly.

I was taught to shave only my calves, and that’s what I did for years. Sometime when I was a young teenager, I was watching an episode of Golden Girls where all the ladies minus Blanche were having this very conversation. Betty White’s character (name escapes me) is aghast at the suggestion that she might shave her thighs, because back home in Mount Olaf, only “fast and loose” women shaved their thighs. Of course, Blanche enters to hear them talking about shaving and announces that she always shaves her thighs. :stuck_out_tongue:

That was the first time I’d ever heard of thigh shaving. So, of course, I started shaving my thighs. Did it all through high school and college. Now I’m a hairy-legged granola cruncher and showers are much quicker with no shaving. I’ll still shave occasionally, when the urge strikes, but now I only do the calves. My thigh hair is too light and short to bother, even when I feel like smooth legs. Even my calf hair has become more sparse with age. I used to have hairy calves all 'round - now it’s really just the shins and a few inches around the ankle that have longer, darker hair.

When I shaved, I only used to shave my calves. Now that I epilate, I remove all the hair from my toes to my upper thighs.

Wow, I had no idea people only shaved their calves.

I do it! But I’m 15, and obsessed with being hairless (except on my head), and wear lots of skirts. Plus I like the feeling. I think it might be one of my favorite feelings in the world.

::goes off to shave legs::

Here is the difference, right here.

I’m darker than you, although still light, but definitely brown.

a) my hair is black
b) it grows in heavier and darker than yours.

Besides, why do a half-job?

What I wanna know is why eldely men go hairless on the legs after wearing socks for decades, and here I am hitting my 40’s after decades of wearing socks too, my leg hair just turns coarser as the years go by. If im getting old I ought to start losing some hair right? NO, I seem to be getting hairier.

I use to shave to the bikini line, then I realized I no longer wore a bathing suit that had a panty cut, I wear nylon swim shorts so now I dont’ have to shave the bikini line if I don’t want to.

I’ve always shaved my thighs. In fact, the Golden Girl episode surprised me in the opposite way-there are some people who only shave their calves?

I can’t stand having leg hair, or stubble. It’s nice to have nice, smooth, hairless legs.

I only shave up to the knee (or just above). Mainly, I’m lazy and there’s a lot of acreage on those thighs, plus the hair’s rather thin and hard to see, so I don’t bother. Plus I never, never, never show my legsies above the knee. Ever.

Because I like to cross my legs when I sit, and I don’t wear stockings, and there’s nothing like having smooth skin all the way up.

But then I shave my legs, underarms, bikini line and have recently begun shaving my arms again.
The three weeks In india when I didn’t shave anything 9the longst time my razor and I have been apart since I was 13) I actually didn’t have much leg-hair to speak of, but I just prefer the way things feel when they’re smooth.

I use those sandpaper things (SilkyMitt?) on the day between shaving, or when I want a total exfoliation thing.

General Questions is for questions with factual answers.

IMHO is for opinions and polls.

I’ll move this to IMHO for you.

I usually shave until the knee. Unless I’m wearing short skirts or going out, in which case I shave the whole legs. I don’t have leg hair on half of my thighs, and most of the other hair is thin and less dark than the under the knee hair. Unfortunately, the hair closest to the bikini area grows very dark and coarse, that’s why I shave it when I go out.

I shave my thighs for the same reason I shave my calves. I like my legs to be smooth. Oh, and blonde leg hair catches the light. It is noticable.
