The original Star Trek TV show.

Jim = James T. Kirk

It’s a Star Trek reference.

thank you very much. i saw an old western once and a horse was dying in the arms of a cowboy. took it as being that. its name was jim or was it the cowboy?

not a star trekker. thanks again.

Reminds me of a story:

Way back in the olden days before email, a memo (remember them?) was circulating round the UK Ministry of Defence. Various people added comments to it and passed it on, as was the usual practice. When it got to Colonel Blank, he took great exception, scrawled ‘Round Objects’, and sent it back.

When the minister read the memo and the comments, he added a note to the civil servant in charge - “Who is Round, and to what does he object?”

back when hu jin tao was the head honcho is china, many joked about his name.

who? ( hu)

I don’t think this novelty Top Twenty item made it in the US- having a go at just about every startrek cliche:

Damn, that is going to be my earworm for the day!

Star Trek iirc

I believe it is a line from “Rio” by Duran Duran.

I had no idea what this meant, until I searched for it:

Sounds like a job for Snopes, to me…

I heard it on Dr. Demento.

Without even clicking on the link (which I can’t from work anyway) I’m betting the line “We come in peace - shoot to kill.” is in there, isn’t it?

It was a summer-camp song for me. “He’s dead, Jim, he’s dead.” Better that than endless rounds of Shark.

Yep, that’s the song. I, too, know it from Dr. Demento and it came immediately to mind from reading the thread title. It didn’t get radio play outside that, so far as I remember. (Holy crap. Looking at Wikipedia entry, apparently “Star Trekkin” was #1 on the singles charts for two weeks in the UK.)

Theeeeeeeeeere’s Klingons on the starboard bow, starboard bow, starboard bow, There’s Klingons on the starboard bow, Get 'em off, Jim!

But where do Starfleet officers go to work out?

Moderator Action

This has strayed well into Cafe Society territory, so let’s beam it over there.

Moving thread from General Questions to Cafe Society.

Hu is on the phone.

Okay better question for ST:TOS fans (that, and I’m just plain curious to see how long it takes someone to come up with the answer):

In which episode did Bones say it first?

I await your collective brilliance.
