You never heard of thanking someone in advance for doing something that you hope (and doubt very much ) he’s capable of doing?

You still misunderstand. The one specific instance I asked Hostile Dialect not to use was “3. Buckeyes”–which is clearly a twisting of the tired “3. Hi, Opal!”, and was created solely to insult a user. There’s been no blanket prohibition of buckeye(s) in or out of the Pit.
My understanding is that, originally, it was disallowed because it was designed to *harass *another poster, not *insult *her. When I brought up several examples of other posters being harassed, only crickets chirped. Have we always been at war with Eastasia?
Oh Good Lord - drop it already.
Harass/insult, I can see it being both. Regardless, neither one is allowed in MPSIMS.
Are you talking to me? If so, would you mind spitting out that chaw first? It’s kind of hard to understand you. Thanks.
Of course I’ve heard of it. Only it’s usually accompanied by the acknowledgement that it is thanks in advance. You know, something along the lines of “Thanks in advance for being such an idiotic tool that you got yourself banned”.
The clumsy construct you used makes it appear that you intended no such thing and are merely attempting dissimulation now to get yourself out of it.
You stay classy, PRR.
Nope. Was talking to PRR. Sorry. Didn’t mean you at all.
ETA - It’s just getting kinda tiresome - all this gnashing of teeth in outer darkness about the damn pit rules and such - I’m just losing my temper a little. I apologize.
I do regret making the glib post here last night, but I think the ensuing discussion illustrates the precedent I was trying to point out:
If harassing another poster = not allowed
and using the phrase “3. Buckeyes” = harassing another poster
and therefore “3. Buckeyes” = not allowed
then
if “Fuck you” = not allowed
and “Regards” = “Fuck you”
then will “Regards” be disallowed as well for consistency’s sake?
I think the new Rule #2 (and dammit, is this post supposed to be in ATMB now, even though the original thread is in the pit?) is going to lead to a lot of code words of which “Regards” is only the first suggested. There’s already been a pit thread closed because a poster was using sarcastic rainbows and sunshine as code for telling Ed to fuck himself. The PTB are telling us to be creative to avoid the language they’d rather we didn’t use, and yet there’s already precedent that such creativity isn’t acceptable either, in certain circumstances.
This post has been regarded by the regardinator.
This post is reminding me that I’ve been meaning to re-read the Illuminatus Trilogy for some time.
Which reminds me that I need to take some books back to the library.
So, my regards and thanks to you all.
You’re expecting consistency? When has that ever happened?
Actually, I almost hope this does happen. Out of sheer pig-headedness and civil disobedience, the Dope will inevitably spawn hundreds of these seemingly innocuous expressions, which will each be sarcastic, blazing condemnations and insults in disguise. Dope equivalents to “bless your heart”, if you will. And, of course, since they are not “direct insults”, they will crop up all over the board, not just in the Pit. The administration around here will have to:
ignore them, calling into question why the hell they started down this dark, rocky road in the first place,
deal with them on an individual basis, which will be insanely time-consuming and controversial, since I don’t see people taking that crap lying down,
or,
I see what you did there.
Thank you for that clarification. I believe I did misunderstand. Is this correct:
It’s okay to say “buckeyes” in any forum.
It’s forbidden to say “3. buckeyes” outside the Pit
I’m so not going there.
I always though the Pit was the place where we could take off the gloves and say what we really think, without having to sugar coat it, a way to get past the superficial junk and get right to the point. I guess not?

How about if we assign numbers to specific curse words, and then we can just refer to the number. We’d all know what we were saying but an outside observer would not. Sane?
“Why don’t you go 2 and then 6 with a 1 up your 5 you 3 5 2 piece of 8 3. 0!”
Shit, a really good rant could look like binary code if we number things right.
…I’m not sure what that’s supposed to be SteveG1 but the first thing that popped into my head is that it’s a pair of hands holding a wheel of casu marzu…
