Shooting at the high school I graduated from.

When I was in high school way back in the 70’s the lunch periods were 10:36, 11:23, and 12:10.

:smack:I’d love to have JUST ONE of these shooting incidents go by without some gun enthusiast doing the standard, retarded, gun/car analogy. Just one.

Maybe next time :frowning:

You’ve got plenty of unstable teenagers with all the associated teenage issues of alienation, anger and resentment. You also have lots of easily accessible guns.

School shootings are bound to happen unless you reduce one of those two factors.

Simplistic but true. Seeing as you aren’t willing to reduce the number of guns and teenage angst is the nature of the beast then, unfortunately, you are going to have lots, lots more.

My contribution to this thread is to relay my grief for the young people who were injured and those who were killed. It is also to note with a sad demeanor and a heavy heart that the young, teen-aged, freshman shooter was, like myself, an American Indian.

On a less somber note, I would like to state that I was following GusNSpot’s post right up until he asked “Why blame the gun for a drunk driver?” I am ashamed to confess that I somewhat misplaced his chain of reasoning at that juncture and was never able to re-acquire it. Perhaps it is something with which only a native northwest Arkansan can hope to retain familiarity.

I heard he used his fathers 40 caliber hand gun. That’s an awfully big gun, isn’t it?

Ugh. Very sorry, it was your former school, Kaiwik.

And this wasn’t exactly general teen angst against the world. This appears to be personal. He shot his friends then himself, so I’m anxious to find out what provoked him to do this. Doesn’t look like he was unpopular-- far from it, being elected Homecoming prince a week ago.

Have any of these school shootings been done by a female yet?

Perhaps it’s because cars have a purpose other than causing death?

In most states cars and driving licenses are highly regulated and controlled. You must buy insurance in case you hurt someone, have training before getting the license, probationary periods, even if you accidentally misuse the car you get fined, etc etc.

You can lose your car if you don’t keep it registered, leave it in the wrong spot. The size, power, and type of car are regulated. Some cars aren’t street legal because they’re too powerful or unsafe.

Regulate guns like cars and drivers licenses and I’d be happy.

PLEASE NOTE: I hate all of these school shootings and would perfectly with a full ban on all public ownership of guns. These replies are for informational purposes only. Please do not think I am a gun nut. I’ve even held a loaded gun.

This is untrue. School shootings have been happening for centuries. They’re just reported with more regularity today.

And if you think this list is disproportionately weighted to recent years so things must be getting worse, I know for a fact that the list is missing a local shooting I remember from the mid 90s. But it was one student specifically targeting another student, so it wasn’t considered a “school shooting” as we used the term back then.

I’m not sure how accurate this stereotype is. For example, the Columbine killers weren’t bullied and weren’t loners. They may not have been popular, but the only reason behind the shooting is that both were deeply mentally disturbed. I assume that eventually the police will discover the same reason behind this shooting.

The school shooting that inspired the song “I Don’t Like Mondays” was committed by a young woman named Brenda Spencer.

Like cars, guns are sometimes misused by people with an impairment. You know, like a drunk or manic operator.

Since I used the word driver, many can not seem to grasp the reference to the disconnect in their arguments as to why it is the fault of the existence of guns and not the fault of the existence cars.

I used it ( the word ‘driver’ ) on purpose “but so many will not see.” ( I left the first part of that saying off on purpose also, which will absolutely confound many apparently because of … I have no idea why they will not get it.

I do not know of many machines that do evil by themselves.

It seems that many do not want to acknowledge that it is the people who are bad, broken, sick, crazy, etc., not the machines.

They do not want to fix the problem, just do something that will not make them look in the mirror or really look inside their own family unit.

You already did the “car” analogy. Rather than repeat yourself, could you say something about IvoryTowerDenizen’s response?

Just wanted to add that this local station has been having very good, sensitive coverage, if you’re interested:

There are some awesome kids out there:

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/Oak-Harbor-forfeits-playoff-match-against-Marysville-Pilchuck-offers-1st-place-280394602.html

There are a lot of high schools and high school kids around the state showing their support via social media. Warms the heart in the middle of this tragedy.

Merged two threads.

So it appears this happened over a school crush.

Damn, one pretty successful kid from a decent community goes nuts over one schoolgirl crush. Shit, he should’ve posted here. He would’ve gotten plenty of “She ain’t worth it, move on” replies from us.

I hope the kids in ICU can fully heal and quickly. I’d love to hear the details of the events leading up to this.

You know what the problem is with the car analogy? Cars aren’t built to kill things. It’s not only not their primary purpose, it’s not any of their purpose (leave out tanks, please).

Guns are. That’s what they’re designed to do, and they do it very, very well. It’s their entire point.

I understand the love for a well made piece of equipment. I understand the enjoyment of learning a skill. I can even understand the yearning to collect multiple examples; hell, I’ve got enough books, believe me I understand the urge to collect.

Guns aren’t cars. They’re weapons, they’re lethal, and the very least we should be willing to do is regulate them as strongly as cars are. No one believes that regulating and licensing guns will solve all the problems, but that doesn’t mean we can’t at least start solving some of them.

Nice thought, but I’m not holding my breath…

Two threads were merged which is obvious so that means that you are just looking for something to snark at me personally about because you do not make those kinds of mistakes. Your diliberate whack at me about something I obviously did not do says a lot more about you than about me.

A little something to help with your low blood pressure. ( I have permission to post this. )

:cool::D:)

There was no mistake made, because my post came long before the merge, and IvoryTowerDenizen’s post was a response to your car analogy. Now-do you have some to say about that response, or not?
