It is to be hoped that we all learned at a young age the proper way to lift a heavy object.
I’ve always been good about keeping my back straight, bending at the knees, and lifting by raising myself (and the object) with my leg muscles- not my back.
As I am now on the far side of my mid-thirties, I find that this advice should now be applied to lifting anything- not just heavy objects. In fact, I’ve found that just lifting my own upper body from the waist, using my back muscles, can be a risky venture! I have so far escaped any serious back injuries but there have been times I’ve experienced just enough pain as to remind myself that I need to be careful about such dangerous tasks as bending over and getting back up.
Anyway, on to my newest discovery!
The other day, I saw a young woman drop something then pick it up off the ground. She was wearing a very short skirt and so, as dictated by modesty, she retrieved the dropped object by bending at her knees to a squat with her legs together. She took hold of the dropped item then stood up, raising herself with her legs. Her back was kept straight the whole time. Perfect!
In the interest of avoiding back injuries, I propose that we all wear short skirts at all times from now on.
I anticipate being asked to give a TED Talk to share this new brilliant idea.
There is a certain percentage of the population that I do not wish to see in a short skirt; they are called “males”. I do not wish to know if the Scotsman won first prize!
And if we’re being good and honest here, there’s a subsection of the female population I have no desire to see in a short skirt either. I, for one, am not physically attracted to every XX-carrying human being.
