It’s less than ten bucks. I have friends against whom I could play over Battle.net. I like real-time games (I’m a Myth: The Fallen Lords addict).
But am I just selling my soul to Satan? Will I throw away all of my free time? (This is why I’ve never gotten cable TV…)
It’s definitely a fun game. The single-player game is a lot of fun, too. However, you might have to get Brood War, too…
Starcraft is an excellent game, if a tad dated these days (says me, who has just bought Starlancer for £3.99 !).

It’s a fantastic game, and great for online play, although I remember cheating being a real problem. Anyone know if it’s still a major issue?
But if you’re playing against friends, and your friends aren’t jackasses, then the cheating problem should be moot.

shrug honestly i didn’t care for it i loved warcraft, i love other RTS games but starcraft just didn’t do it for me at all.
Absolutely loved Starcraft – it is indeed horribly addictive. Great for multiplayer (but play against people you know so as to avoid the cheating l33t types). Even the single-player game is good; great storyline and I liked how they weaved the scenarios for the different races together.
For twenty bucks, pick up the Starcraft Warchest or Battlechest or whatever they call it – Starcraft, the Brood War expansion and hint books. It’s well worth the investment.

Absolutely excellent game. Highly recommended. And after you’ve mastered it, don’t be afraid to look up some of the Using Map Settings games – they can be very different and unique.
Starcraft ensnared me for three good years, addictive, and i kicked starcraft cuz another blizzard game took its place (diablo ii).
If you want a good game, buy it, if you want to kill a lot of time, buy it.
I don’t recommend multiplayer tho, cuz then you’ll truly become an addict, a sleepless addict.
I do recommend you logging onto battle.net to up grade to the latest patch, and after the whole starcraft single player campaign Brood wars expansion pack is a must.
this game will have lasting consequeces on your sleeping habits. You will begin to dream of battles at night, and imagine scenarios by day. It will consume your life, be prepared for it.
In my opinion, Starcraft is the greatest strategy game ever conceived. The balance is perfect. The graphics, while dated, are simple and expressive. The controls are smooth and reliable. The sounds are unique and exciting, adding to the gameplay immensely. Most importantly, the gameplay, in both single player and multiplayer, is unbeatable.
The game’s sole weakness lies in the players on battle.net. They are annoying, they cheat, and they do not (and refuse to) play a wide variety of maps. They prefer maps where resources are unlimited, removing a vital aspect of the game, the most exciting in my opinion - managing a limited number of resources and fighting over unclaimed resources. However, if you have friends who play and they are willing to play a random map once in a while, you will find that the game is very satisfying, as, for the most part, each and every map is distinct and well designed.
I highly recommend you purchase Starcraft, especially at its reduced price. Keep in mind, you better buy Brood War as well, for the game is incomplete without it. That is how good Brood War is, it actually becomes essential to get the whole experience.
As for my personal experience with the game, I was horribly addicted for many prime years of my youth. And I don’t regret a single moment.
I bought the little minibox SC/Broodwar combo set a few months ago for like 20 some odd bucks. So I’m a late-comer too.
My favorite part of the game is that you can watch saved games. I’ve downloaded a crapload of replays from various websites. You can watch some of the top SC players at work. You can also download replays from the World Gaming Championships.
It’s great to watch a player almost get annihilated and come back to defeat three opposing players. Or watch one Terran defeat seven Zerg. Or watch some unsuspecting Protoss outpost get nuked unmercifully. Some of these replays last over an hour, so it’s like a little downloadable war drama.
If you can get past the fact that some filenames are things like “THIS_GAME_IS_TRIPLE_GAY!!!.rep”, you can catch some good stuff.
I have Starcraft and the Brood War expansion set, but it’s not loaded onto this computer. Should I bother installing it on a 500 Mhz with 64Mb memory and a 56k connection? Is this fast enough for multiplayer games?
Also- I’ve seen some games organized here before. I’m in, if you want to play with trustworthy people. I would be enough of a newb to get crushed a few times, but I have the strategy guides here.
My sons love to play, so if I’m busy one of them could join in.

I’d get it only if you’re willing to waste massive amounts of time playing it. I played it frequently for almost four years. Talk about worth the cost!
