Should Jack Smith, Judge Merchan, etc flee to a foreign country?

Here’s a link from a week ago, suggesting how Jack Smith and his staff are preparing for a Trump victory, which will shut them down.

The article says, for example, that some staff have left for other jobs, Smith has extra security guards, is taking care to avoid cyber attacks, etc.

But all of these steps are based on the assumption that the legal system still functions under Trump’s reign. And, for most Americans, that’s probably true. But for the dozens of people on Trump’s personal hate list…I would be scared.

Judge Merchan will sentence Trump in three weeks, probably to a symbolic fine of a few thousand dollars. But for Trump, that will be just as intolerable as a jail sentence…it insults his ego, and he will demand retribution.
Jack Smith will obviously be fired and his case against Trump dismissed. But that won’t satisfy Trump, who will demand to do actual harm to Smith. And there are plenty of people on Smith’s staff who Trump will hunt down, too.

Getting arrested doesn’t seem like a lot of fun. Trump will give the orders, no matter how illegal they are, and somewhere he will find a cop to carry them out.

So my question is: what would you do personally? If you were, say a paralegal assistant working in Smith’s office, or even if you were Smith, or Judge Merchan himself?
I think I would try to flee the country.

But that’s not easy to do. On a simple tourist visa, you can’t stay for 4 years, and you can’t hold a job.

In their position? I’d flee the country and hope that before my time runs out wherever I go agrees that I count as a political refugee fleeing persecution. Or put a bullet in my head if I can’t, it’ll be quicker than being beaten to death or worse.

If I could afford it I would move and find a new job, or at least quit working for a while. I’d hire 24-hour armed protection, and make my new house break-in proof. I’d also have an arsenal at my ready and not travel without body guards. If I couldn’t afford that, I would flee to another country, however, fleeing doesn’t guarantee your safety. They can get to you anywhere in the world if they really want to.

They should if they can. We all should if we can. The idea of dying on a mission to Mars is now far more palatable.

One of my first thoughts roiling around in my brain as I was failing to fall asleep last night was that Jack Smith had better be trying to ask for refugee status in a country that doesn’t have an extradition treaty with the US. And even that latter may not be necessary as extradition generally requires showing there is a case against the accused. I didn’t think about Judge Merchan, but probably he should too. Also the jurors.

Smith could go back to his former job in The Hague…
