Me neither. I went to one of those high schools where I couldn’t have gone even if I wanted to. My straight friends told me it was pretty lame, but I always kinda wanted to go to one.
In the interest of contributing to the thread:
So in the town I live in, there’s a student organization called the Ten Percent Society that throws ballroom dances, and people literally come in from all over the state to attend. It’s off the hook. We’re talking maybe 400 gay or bisexual people in one ballroom.
The week before the first dance, I went around to a bunch of used clothing stores and bought a dress. I danced with and kissed girls for the first time in my life at the dance, so I’ll count that as my prom.
I went to two proms. In a tux, both times! But the girls/young women I went with were hot. If I can figure out a way to post them, I’m going to. Pure early 70s.
Well for the sake of repetition I guess I’ll post mine again, even though it’s linked in the thread linked in the OP… that’s too much linkage. So here’s a link.
I never went to my prom either, but about two weeks ago, I attended that Last Dinner on the Titanic thing, and here’s a picture one of my friends took of me:
Mhaha! That’s the first decent pic I’ve seen of you, Guin! No I know what you look like, which is only fair, since you’ve seen pictures of me.
I don’t have any pictures, but my prom dress was made by my then-boyfriend, and was floorlength and black silk/rayon velvet. He made the pattern, and then made the dress. Huge more than a circle skirt. Unfortunately, I was 15 pounds lighter six years ago, and I can’t get into it now. Sigh.
I don’t have any pictures from the prom itself. I don’t even remember what the theme was, but I think the theme colors were either maroon/silver or maroon/clear.
I can’t find the picture, it’s around here somewhere. I graduated at the same time as Opal, and my dress was dark blue and black fabric (at the same time, like that car paint). The bodice was the same fabric, but with blue glitter dots. Your basic princess bodice with lots of skirt (I had a crinoline!) and poofy sleeves, cut somewhat low. Very 1991.
I can’t find pictures (maybe I can scan some in over thanksgiving weekend) so you’ll have to do with a story.
For the first prom I ever went to, I picked up a decent dress for twenty bucks from a second hand store.
The next year, when it was prom time, I went around to the second hand stores, and then the more upscale vintage clothing stores, and didn’t find a single thing I liked.
But the I found The Dress. At first I was suspicious. It was a strange chartreause/gold color. It was kind of wierd. The satin was way too think, and the cut just seemed kind of odd.
Then I tried it on, and it was perfect. I plunked down eighty bucks for it. Then they told me it’s history. It was apparently a haute couture dress from the thirties. This dress went down fashion show runways half a century ago. Wow!
And of course I managed to bust out the zipper at the end of the night. sigh
I love seeing these dresses! And some of you are so young… sheesh! Guin, I love black lace overlays, and Daowajan, scandalously high slits are the only kind to have. And lavendar is such a good color. Jeep, your date was a doll. And I can’t believe that your mom made that dress, Antares. It is so gorgeous.
Anyway, I don’t know where my photos of my prom dress might be. I had this frothy, cream-colored Gunne Sax, with a sheer cream overlay with tiny pink and lavender flower print. I got it the summer before my senior year, for $30, since prom time was over. It was pretty, but I would prefer some kind of straight, tight little cocktail number now rather than that big frothy lacy thing. For those who didn’t go, you didn’t miss much, mine sucked. My date was quite a few years older than me. He wanted to boink, and I wasn’t interested, so he was no fun at all. He ate too many refreshments after drinking some tequila, and got the stomach ache. Booooring. My prom dress might fit my big toe now, maybe, but nowhere else on my body.
Of course, for my wedding dress, I went for the sparkly snow angel dress. I do have photos of it!
