Significant discoveries made by the SDMB?

With all the great discussions that go on here on the SDMB, I was wondering if any new, unique discoveries have been made because of the posts here. I don’t mean where people become better informed about things we already know. I mean where the discussions lead to new knowledge that was unknown before.

For example, maybe there was a post about prime numbers which lead to a new way to factor primes or to determine if a number was prime. Or maybe someone asked something about subatomic particles that lead to a new formula used in quantum mechanics.

So has the SDMB advanced mankind’s knowledge?
P.S. Please no humorous thread hijacks. Thanks.

LOL. We learn who are the clue’ers and who are the clue’ees–in my book, a significant thing.

You’re asking way too much of us, not expecting smarminess.

I seem to recall something a couple of months ago where a state government was attempting to figure out the names of the people in an old photograph, and the combined research efforts of the SDMB went a long way toward identification. I don’t know what ultimately happened.

Not ground-shaking, of course, but it’s the first thing that sprang to mind.

Now if we could just nail down that pesky “whole nine yards” thing… –ducks and runs–

Discovery: Contrary to popular belief, it is possible (without liquid help) to eat six saltines in 60 seconds, but not in Toronto.

A significant amount of trolls has been discovered…

Gaudere’s Law

Well, we are currently doing ground breaking research in this thread.

Also, did anybody manage to solve that whole MS ordering of states thingie? It seemed that one went on far too long without an answer.

Well, we did find the answer to: Why is there a hole in the lid of some Kiwi shoe polish cans?

I like the word sleuthing here.

gry. We also found the missing dollar.
