Fairly often, I’ll find myself repeatedly listening to a single song; for example, I’ve been listening to “To Forgive” by The Smashing Pumpkins for probably the past hour now, maybe longer. As happens often, I’ve just found myself in the mood to listen to this song over and over again. Does anyone else do this, or is this a quirk unique to me?
I just downloaded “Washington Square” with Napster and played it for longer than that. I once owned the single, and wore it out. I couldn’t resist doing the same again.
I be Hipmotized!
On Opening Day, I’ll play John Fogarty’s Centerfield over and over again. It sets a great tone for the entire season. Which for me lasts about 1 week (I’m a Cubs fan).
Yes. Yes I do.
:::raises hand:::
Right here. All the time. Sometimes I’ll do it for days. For some reason, though, when I get going on my one-song loops, it’s almost always an Allman Brothers tune, something from Eat a Peach. I one listened to nothing but “Blue Sky” and “Little Martha” for four days running. Killed my tape.
Heck yes I do. Some of my favorite repeat button songs:
“Seven” by Prince (he’s officially reverted to his old pronounceable name)
“One Week” by the Barenaked Ladies
“Man, I Feel Like a Woman!” by Shania Twain
“Fly Away” by Lenny Kravitz
“Too Funky” and “Freedom” by George Michael (they are in succession on the album, so I just repeat those two over and over)
“Bitch” by Meredith Brooks
“Freak on a Leash” by Korn
“End of the Innocence” by Don Henley
Typically when I get a new album, I play the familiar songs over and over again. As I become used to (and grow fondness for) the rest of the album, I let the whole thing play. Unfortunately, some albums suck (or are at least bland) with the exception of one of two songs–so that’s all I’ll play. This is the case with all those listed above, except the BNL and Kravitz songs.
Song I can’t get enough of now: “Everything You Want” by Vertical Horizon. I’ve heard the album is equally good, too.
Koffing, I think I like you.
I believe that single-songing is a trait inherent to all Smashing Pumpkins fans. I have been known to do it with Soma, Porcelina, 1979, With Every Light, and To Sheila for hours, and with Mayonaise for days at a time.
But your opinion is noted. Next time my life appears worthless (which shouldn’t take more than a half hour or so) I shall have to give “To Forgive” a listen or 8.
I, too, can obsess on a single song for days (when I was younger, for weeks). I don’t have one right now, but if I could snag a copy of the single at work, it would be Warren Zevon’s “Porcelain Monkey.” Great song.
Catrandom
All the time here as well. The most prominent memory is when I got Everything But The Girl’s album with “We Walk The Same Line” and played it over and over for days on end. I still listen to it almost every day (three years later). The cool thing is that it has a huge significance in my life now.
The Mountains Win Again by Blues Traveller is far and away the worst one I do this with.
Just recently I started it with Try Again by Aaliyah and Coming Around Again/Itsy Bitsy Spider by Carly Simon.
And before you say it, yes, my musical taste is totally schizophrenic.
I once recorded a full cassette tape with just one song by Reo Speedwagon… young love will do that to you.
Of course. We all need repeated listenings to better discern the second and third level subtexts of the songs. At least that’s the excuse I use. Really, though, I just like certain songs a whole lot.
Of course, should you choose to do this without the benefit of headphones in a place where there are other people present, they WILL come up to you and ask you to “freakin’ give it a rest already! Jeez!” and then stalk off muttering something uncomplimentary about obsessive behavior. Sigh. Some people have absolutely NO poetry in their souls.
Yes, all the time. Winamp is automatically set to repeat songs.
yep. Everclear’s “Santa Monica” has to be repeated at least three times, or else I am not satisfied.
I have been known to constantly repeat De La Soul’s “A Roller Skating jam Called Saturday.”
I also really like Creedence Clearwater Revival’s version of “I Heard it Through the Grapevine.” Of course, I could play that for an hour and still only hear it 3 times.
Currently, I’ve had Toad the Wet Sprocket’s “Windmills” on repeat in my car fairly often. The album that’s gotten the most repeat play ever in my life is In Loving Memory Of… by Big Wreck. I listened to that damn thing nonstop for like six months after I got it.
During a feud with my neighbors in my dorm at college, I would leave for the day with my stereo playing loudly, and the CD player on single-song repeat of the theme to “Gimme a Break.” I knew that TV themes CD would come in handy some time.
There’s just something about Nell Carter’s shrieking voice that annoys people. I don’t get it.
Phil Collins - Sussudio.
No, this thread is about songs that you like so much you repeat them on purpose, not about songs that you would repeat only if you were at gunpoint or stuck in hell.
I’ll put one song on repeat and listen for hours. Or if I like the whole cd I put it on repeat and listen to it for hours/days.
Some of the ones I’ve done this with are:
Queen Princes of the Universe and Another One Bites the Dust
AC/DC Dirty Deeds
Savage Garden Affirmation (The song not the whole cd though I have repeated the whole cd :))
Backstreet Boys Larger Than Life
Toto Africa
Jann Arden Insensitive
Others as well but those are the most recent ones.
