Six degrees of Straight Dope

Here’s mine.

Born in Fort Bragg, N.C. (right next to Fayetteville, N.C.) in 1971.

Have lived in:

  • 74-76: Carmel, Indiana

  • 85-89: Fort Bliss, TX (grades 9-12 at Cathedral High in El Paso)
  • 89-92: Irving, TX (attended University of Dallas)
  • 93 (Spring): Manziana, Italy. Just outside of Roma.
  • 93-present: El Paso, TX. Work for UT El Paso.

What part of Oakland? I’m a few blocks from Mills College. Do you know where they have that huge dispay of XMas lights every year? Well I’m on one of those blocks.

With a CV like that, how could you not join the army? Don’t you miss moving every couple of years?

We talked about this at the British fest, right? If not, boy, are we dumb. I was in Crumstadt (just outside of GG) for a few weeks in 1999, so I am sure you were ahead of me in the brodchen line at least once. And how weird is it that you hit on Jeddah and Gross Gerau, but no one on UNC, for pete’s sake?

As a matter of fact, I miss moving so much that I’ll be pulling up the stakes and relocating to Austin some time this summer. Hey, I may actually be able to attend some Dopefests!

I attended the Chicago Kent School of Law from 1987 to 1991, when it was located across the street from the Merc.

Emony Dax comes closest. My wife and I overlaped with her at UT from 1993-1996.

What was your major? Where did you live? I was B.S. Molecular Biology, lived in University Towers 1993, Rio Nueces 1994-1996. My wife got a B.A. in art.

Here’s me:
1975 – born, Port Elizabeth South Africa.
1977 – moved, Winnipeg Canada
1978 – moved Skokie Illinois
1979 – moved to Houston TX
1993-1997 – UT Austin
1997 – back to infernal Houston, at Baylor College of Medicine, med school
1999 – started my PhD at BCM
4/4/2005 – finished my PhD at BCM
5/2006 – will finish my MD at BCM

It is no fun, really, when you are Jewish. With Jews, even non practicing ones, it takes usually around 10 minutes to find someone you know in common… With South African or Texas Jews, knock that back to about 5 minutes.

This is pretty cool.

Currently living in Michigan City, IN (Missed Vunderbob by about 40 years)

Attended Northwestern U. 1977 to 1982 (missed pulyamell by a decade or so there)

Born in Detroit, as was Shirley Ujest and Stuffy.

My dad was born in Chillicothe, where Evil One now lives, and **E. Thorpe ** used to live.

Have a number of cousins in Van Wert, OH, and all my grandparents buried there, where Suse used to live. Been to family reunions there.

My SO attended Earlham College in Richmond, IN, where Brynda taught.

In a nutshell:
Born In Detroit.
Moved to Holland, MI when I was about 6 months old.
College in Evanston, IL at Northwestern, and lived there afterward.
Also in several neighborhoods in Chicago, northside.
Spent a couple of years in WInter Haven and Lake Alfred, FL.
Moved back to Chicago to attend Chicago Kent College of Law.
Now living in Michigan City, IN (a couple of blocks from where Slug Signorino used to have a studio).
Have worked, amoung other places, Chandler’s Office Supply (ever have a Chandler’s Assignment Book?), the Old Chicago Smoke Shop, Ameritech (now SBC), Alpine Engineering (in Florida), and various legal firms in Chicago.

Probably. I spent one yer (my senior year) there. My junior year was in Mary Low, Sophomore year I was one of those poor people in temp housing first semester - a lounge in Woodman, then either E Quad or W Quad for the second half. Freshman year I was in Woodman.
(it’s terrible having a mind that won’t let go of silly details).

It’s early, just had my first sip of coffee. I was thinking, “I never went to a British Dopefest.” Then it all came back to me. So I guess we don’t need those “other degrees” anyway. Mostly I remember mud from that Britfest. And haggis. But I was never military, so maybe we passed and blinked lights on the A-5.

I was freshman year in Mary Low, sophomore year in Woodman, and junior (first half) and senior year in Coburn. I see we both avoided Foss.

Temp housing was the worst; I feel for you.

Ok, I’ll finally post my stuff*:

Born in Contra Costa County, CA. Lived in various places, including Hayward and Concord.

*this is really a fine act of procrastination of something else I don’t want to do – like most things in the SDMB

I lived in the UT Women’s Co-ops on campus, before they were bought out by the University and turned into dorms :frowning: B.A. in English, here, so we probably didn’t have any classes together  As big as UT is, though, you never know. After I married my husband (UT class of '94) I found out we’d had an anthropology class together six years before we met!

how long did you live in beeville? i have a cousin about your age that was there until high school at which point she went to st mary’s hall in san antonio, but i knew quite a few of her friends.

and might i add, that is quite an impressive list of obscure texas towns!

Hi Suse! I was born in Zanesville, and most of my family is still there or in other parts of SE Ohio.

Might as well throw my stuff out there.

Born Portland Indiana 12/20/1981
Lived in Redkey, Indiana (and I’ll give a dollar* to anyone who has been to Redkey) until '86, at which time fate dropped me in Botkins, Ohio (I’m sure many of you have heard of Botkins. We used to have a stoplight.)
During my teens (late 90’s) I was involved in Boy Scouts (Miami Valley Council) especially the Juinior Leader Training (Bear Claw). I also attended National Junior Leader Instructor Camp in '97 at Philmont.
I worked at the Olive Garden in Lima, OH starting in '02
I spent a couple years in the OSU area of Columbus, living on Norwich near Neil, and then on Dorris near…well Neil.

Near misses thus far:
ShibbOleth I’m fairly certain I was in Lima a few times that summer, but seeing as I was 10, little chance of a connection there.
Suse My Ex took French Horn lessons in Paulding, and a classmate from Lima had/has a punk rock band based out of Paulding (his parents own a pizza shop there, but danged if I can remember the name)

  • this is a taped broadcast, contest is over.

1970-72 - lived in Syracuse, NY
1972-88 - in Brasher Falls, NY
1988-89 - in Plattsburgh, NY
1993-96 - in Potsdam, NY
1996-98 - in Raleigh, NC
1998-2005 - in Troy, NY
2005 - in Nassau, NY

And since some of us are including our RHPS experiences…I spent every Friday and/or Saturday in the spring of 1989 at the Roxy in Plattsburgh, NY.

I know there are some Dopers from the Capital District, but I would be shocked if anyone here was from Brasher.

I had a near miss with Polycarp. We both worked for the same company in Raleigh, NC. Although I was there before him, I missed him by about a year. I discovered it when I clicked on his profile about 5 years ago. And I believe he used to live in Upstate NY for a time, if I’m not mistaken. Cool, eh?

Nothing solid for me, but a few near misses:

  1. I grew up in Elmhurst, west of Chicago, from 1970-1988. Sounds like a few others were in that area.

  2. I overlapped with Emony Dax and edwino at UT, but I was in the law school (1992-95) so I probably never ran into them.

  3. I live in Dallas, as does Cerri. I’ve been to a few of the high-end clubs she’s talking about for bachelor parties, but that was several years ago (that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it).

A few other details:

  • After high school in Elmhurst, went to Notre Dame from 1988-92

  • Since law school at UT, I’ve practiced in Forth Worth and Dallas until now.

I bet I’ve got a winner, so I’ll start with Dopernames:

  • PinkMarabou, I was living in Dayton from 2000-2003 and dancing at Axis about once a month.
  • Bibliocat, Emilio Lizardo, my then-girlfriend (now wife!) worked in the BMA 98-99 at the ticket counters. We both attended JHU from 1996-2000 and sang in the JHU Mental Notes. Did you see our shows?
  • Clothahump, I have several friends in the ballistic missile community who have lived on Kwajalein at various points in time. Ever met the mayor, base commander, or some other famous figure out there?
  • kinera, I see your Ohio geek credentials and I can’t help but wonder if you ever went to see the RHPS at the Neon (2000-2003) or the Ohio RenFest down near Cincinnati… if so, I bet we saw each other.
  • davmilasav, I have tons of relatives in Beaver County PA, and several friends at Clarion, CMU, Pitt, and more. My grandfather is a Member (big donor) to the University Club at Pitt.
  • Art Vandalay, my cousin-by-marriage was a Deadhead in the late 80s / early 90s, and went by the name Harvest something. She’s from near Philly.
  • Suse, I’m managing a contract whose subcontractor is in Ft. Wayne. Do you know anyone who works over at ITT?

Alright, there are my hits. Now to lay out some bait.

I grew up in Bethany Beach Delaware where my father was mayor for eight years. I had contact with literally thousands of tourists from the greater DC area, particularly Chevy Chase, Rockville, and Bethesda. If you know people in the Greater-DC country club scene, we have a match. I’m sure of it.

I attended St. Andrew’s School, Middletown, DE, from 1992-96. I helped with a prank that has apparently become famous in the east coast private school circles, so if you know someone at Exeter or Choate, you may have heard of me - the prank involves playing Denis Leary’s “Asshole” song at full volume from a bell tower on graduation day. Dead Poets’ Society was also filmed at my high school, and my dorm parents and Latin teacher had bit parts. Ever shaken Robin Williams’ hand? Then we have a match.

I attended Johns Hopkins University and did ROTC at University of Maryland College Park from 1996-2000. I sang in an a cappella group that toured up and down the east coast. As a ROTC cadet I went to Mildenhall Air Base (Mildenhall UK) during the summer of 1998.

I was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force in May of 2000, and served at Wright-Patterson AFB for three years.

I just moved back to Silver Spring MD where I live with my wife and manage contracts for the Air Force. Our contractors are from Santa Barbara CA, Aurora CO, Boulder CO, Ft Wayne Indiana, and Manhattan Beach CA.

I have relatives in every county in Delaware, Orlando FL, Allentown PA, Butler PA, The Main Line (Philly), and Charleston SC, but these are each small families except my Philly connections.

My mother teaches math education to elementary-school math teachers (and their students) around the country, with frequent trips to Princeton NJ and Chicago IL, although I don’t know which schools she teaches at. If you know someone who is active in the national elementary education standards community, you may know my mom.

Betcha I get a match on something here!

Doubt I’ll get any hits, but it doesn’t hurt to try…
