Six Feet Under - 07/01/2004

We already did; he was in last season’s episode where Claire went to the cemetary to find her dad’s grave. Dead Nathanial was there, Dead Lisa was there, dead Gabe was there, dead Gabe’s brother (Anthony?) was there, Claire’s aborted-fetus-turned-baby was there.

But did they? Aside from overhearing that conversation at the party where one of George’s ex-relationships (she wasn’t even an ex-wife, IIRC) said something about the guy just ceasing contact without any warning, we don’t know anything about George’s relationships with his ex-wives.

We have seen several fantasies of Ruth imagining what his ex-wives might say, but as this is a total figment of Ruth’s imagination, it just echos her insecuritues, rather than tell us anything at all about the truth behind George’s past relationships.

Did anyone else catch Sarah’s (Patricia Clarkson’s) remark that George reminded her of Nathaniel? I thought that was very interesting. We don’t know a heck of a lot about Nathaniel except that he died in the first episode, he smoked and he had a little private hideout. That last item implies that he, too, was a very private man who probably needed to get away from Ruth occasionally. I certainly hope he wasn’t as peculiar as George who probably should enroll in Hermit School, but, then again, don’t you have to be peculiar to be an undertaker?

I just had a really horrible, horrible thought.

You don’t suppose George’s secret is going down to the cellar at nights where the dead bodies are and…

Nah.

Did I hear it correctly, did Ruth call her sister “Sarah”? I thought her name was Claire, for whom her daughter was named. Kathy Bates and Patricia Clarkson provided a much needed divertissement. David may finally be coming to a turning point in his survival saga. Keith was being most supportive, as supportive as anyone can be long distance. OK, Joe’s leaving under his own steam because he’s got the icks about Brenda’s infidelity. Seems Nate can stop meeting and bedding available women. I agree that all of George’s “wives” look vaguely like Ruth. Were they CGI’s, or did they get 6 similarly-visaged women to stick their heads in glass jars? Ruth seemed to be in uber-Ruth mode, she was really laying it on thick. Not]/u] questioning George, or trying not to, about his fossil hunt;the tears at seeing her sister; her excuse in order to stay overnight. Claire and Edie, swing and a miss. Tune in next week. I think it’s time for Nate, Sr. to reappear, perhaps to all family members in turn. Federico was alternately sage and clueless. Was leaving the book really his goodbye to Sofia? If Vanessa hadn’t exploded, would he have gone back there? Are Vannessa and the kids soon to be disappeared? Almost everyone’s love interest get shown the door eventually, this’d be a good way to “open up” Federico’s character. The finale will be 12September, they’ve got to pack a lot in to get us to some good cliffhangers.

I think Vanessa is going to jump Sofia. Might get very ugly. How about Sofia=COTW & Vanessa in prison for a season ending?

So, you thought that several dead people (and the child that an aborted fetus would have become) were actually communicating with Claire in that scene, that it wasn’t just one of their many introspective fantasy sequences? Do you also think that the heads of George’s ex-wives really appeared and talked to Ruth?

Gabe (thanks for reminding me of his name) may turn up again, either alive or dead. Though probably not, given the show’s tendency to completely drop troublesome storylines (e.g., the predatory corporation that was trying to pressure the Fishers into selling suddenly went bankrupt).

Yes, Ruth’s sister has always been named Sarah.

And yes, I think by just leaving the book rather than taking it in, that was Rico’s way of saying good-bye. I’m guessing since Vanessa threw him out, he had nowhere else to go. Maybe he figured he might as well go do what he was accused of. I’d hate to see Vanessa and the kids leave, but I can’t see any other option now. Rico is screwed, literally and figuratively.

I took that cemetary scene to be very different to most of the other fantasy sequences - it served a purpose of closure, which I don’t think any other fantasy scene does - and it also was paced very differently. I took it to be Claire acknowledging what she already subconciously knew, that Gabe was dead. And also helped the enormity of the abortion to sink in.

That’s what happens in real life - things can change abruptly (remember Enron?). And in any case, I thought the part that was not dealt with fully when the firm went bust was what happened to the other funeral directors who had sold out (the ones they met on the private jet).
