Six Feet Under: "Another Voice" 3/16/03 SPOILERS

A Happy St. Patrick’s Day to All!!!

Not a bad episode, IMHO. There was good character development with Rico, who’s still trying to feel his way through the live human aspects of the business. The conversation between him and Nate after Callie’s funeral was terrific. What’s interesting, though, is that while Nate (so far) responds to the grieving families and relatives with a kindly “I’m so sorry for your loss,” Rico’s caught up with trying to understand what happened by asking for details. While his questions might be considered inappropriate, they show a lot about his character and his chosen profession. I suppose he has to know quite a bit about how people died to do a good reconstruction.

There is an unreal haze hanging over Lisa and Nate’s marriage. It was pretty evident to me he’s going through the motions of being married (masturbating in the car, talking with Rico in the basement) and is sort of sleepwalking through it all. Nate seems detached from Lisa, Maya, and everyone else in his life, which makes me even more eager for Brenda to come back. I hope it’s a deliberate choice and not script or directing problems.

David and Keith broke my heart. They went from so happy and relaxed at the resort, singing in bed, right back to angry and sullen in seconds during the car ride home. I don’t see them lasting, especially now that David’s got the Gay Men’s Chorus going for him.

Has anyone who’s ever been to art school give me some perspective on how it compares to Claire’s LAC Arts or whatever it’s called? I did like her tombstone sketch, and that girl who walked out of the class had a pretty nifty hairdo.

And Ruth? Shoplifting?!

I agree. I think they are setting it up for Brenda’s comeback. Nate will have to examine his feelings about Lisa and about the marriage.

Overall, the episode was lackluster, but I understand having to build up the plots and not just throwing people into situations only to have the audience try to figure out why they did what they did.

I was more surprised by Ruth’s shoplifting than by her (possibly impending admission of) “fancying”* Bettina**. How’s that for great character development!

*for lack of a better word (I don’t want to peg her as lesbian or bi if she’s only curious or confused)

**is that her name? I’m blanking on it right now.
