Small “Nice” Moments

This for me, too. There are two lights that when I make them, make for a great day.

A few months ago, I moved back out to the country and put in a big bird feeder outside the dining room. Most every morning, as I head for the kitchen and the coffee, I’ll see a dozen Redwing Blackbirds, males and females, on and around that feeder. Makes me smile every time.

Clicking on an SD forum and finding several new interestingly-titled threads.

 I’m always surprised how quickly the birds find the feeder when it first goes out. It’s like magic – I put it out and there’s a bunch of birds already!

And when the snow is deep, another nice moment is seeing a red squirrel head pop out of one of the tunnels they create.

-Seeing an unusual bit of wildlife, such as a snake or eagle, is really cool to me.
-Once a month I have to drive to an island community in the Gulf for a hearing. The trip is mostly a pain but the moment when I’m crossing the bridges onto the island, it’s like a poster for a tropical vacation. So beautiful.
-Being able to cross a busy road without having to break my pace when on my bicycle. Takes a few minutes off of my morning commute if I’m biking to work.
-That sweet moment during a weekend when I remember I have Monday off.
-Once a year, when I get the notice that I got a cap gain on my IRA. This year it was equal to more than half of my annual salary. Pseudo-free money! Sweet!

Arriving at the metro stop and having the train arrive two minutes later.

Once in the car, my 7-year-old son just spontaneously said, “I’m glad you’re my Daddy.”

The glow from that still warms me.

When I bring our dog Luna back from a potty break, once inside the condo foyer I close the outer door and release her leash. She bounds up the three carpeted steps and races in mad zoomies around the landing for a few seconds, and then freezes and looks at me, still crouching.

When I give the signal of approval, she instantly unfreezes and rockets off into zoomies of a WHOLE. NOTHER. LEVEL.

When I open up a uncracked MRE, and find that the coffee hasn’t gone rancid. Nice! Alright. Let’s get this out onto a tray.

Another bird-related nice moment: any time I hear a canyon wren’s song it’s like a little bit of magic has been added to my day.

I was in a coal mine in Drumheller, Alberta. All us tourists had miner’s hats with headlamps on them, old school kind, like a candle.

The tour operator decided to turn the lights off and show us how dark the true working conditions had been. By sheer coincidence, a random 4 people’s lamps formed a pattern on the wall 4 out of 5 of the Olympic rings. In the darkness, I heard a voice say, “Hey, one more circle and we’ve got the Olympic rings!”. I quickly moved my head and added my circle to theirs, completing the pattern. I heard the same voice say: “NICE”. Everyone in the tour had a giggle and whenever I think about that guy’s simple joy, I smile to myself.

Driving to work this morning and listening a 20-song album on shuffle. Song 4 is finishing up and I say “Song Title” and point at the console for it to come on next. And it did.

I had to go look it up. Nice.

Hearing the white-throated sparrow for the first time every spring. Chickadees too. Actually the first morning I hear birds singing through my open bedroom window.

I’ve been on that tour! When I was on it, at one point the tour guide was explaining how miners would be loading coal into the carts to be dragged out, and that they were expected to load about 16 tons a day. Then someone asked what they were paid for that and I just about burst when the guide didn’t reply, “You load 16 tons and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt.” It was the perfect setup how can you pass that up!

I spent most of my life in suburban neighborhoods, but since mid-2004, we’ve been living in a rural area with lots of Amish farms. When nights are mild enough to leave the windows open, I still get a kick out of hearing owls. And on occasion when I drive home, I may see a bald eagle flying over one of the farms I pass. One afternoon, there were easily six bald eagles in that field - I assumed they were all eating, but I’d never seen that many all in one place at one time.

My non-nature thrill is when I manage to pass the elementary school before the buses pull out. That means I don’t get stuck in stop-n-go for a couple of miles!

Jeez, I’d have had that question on the application form.

…3) Pre existing health conditions, particularly claustrophobia?

…4) You move 16 tons and what do you get?

…5) Willing to work weekends?

Ooh, after I’ve been in bed long enough to get all warm under the covers I use my right foot to peel off the left sock, then left hoof to peel off right sock.

Feels so delicious, I actually fantasize about this moment during the day.

And ain’t nuthin like an ice-cold gulp of Sprite when I’m really thirsty.

You’re not actually Steve 1989 are you?

Yeah, when I’ve had to get up early to pee and when I get back under the covers, that warm little pocket of heaven is so good.

I thought about including that first drink of caffeine in the morning, but perhaps I shouldn’t categorize a junkie getting his hit as a “nice” moment.
