What we need though is a better, less corny, winky. I even have a name for him: :bemused: .

I was under the strong assumption it always went like this:
- Usually used in the Pit, where one of the debaters is blissfully ignorant of what’s going on–especially the argument.
:rolleyes: - A fly just landed on my head, and I can’t get my fingers off the keyboard to flick it off.
:dubious: - Mostly found in Great Debates to initiate the thought that someone farted while posting. “Did you fart? Cause I sure didn’t. Did someone fart?”
- Also normally found in the Pit where one debater is so burned, he puts on his #14 welder’s goggles to avoid direct UV and IR rays. He’s smiling because he can see again.
:smack: - “I just let my hand off the keyboard to smack that damned fly!”
- Used all over the boards to indicate that someone’s coffee went cold/beer went warm.
- “I didn’t get that fly. I hit myself in the eyeball instead. But it’s okay, 'cause the damn fly is gone. . .”
- Used in General Questions in regards to good dental hygiene.
- Used when there’s a lot of flies around one’s head, and you can’t take your hands off the keyboard to shoo them away.
:o - Normally used by those drinking, it indicates that the individual has left to praise the “Porcelain Goddess”
:eek: - Also used by those drinking while posting, to show the emotion when one realizes, “Hey, I don’t remember eating that!”
- Again, one used when one realizes they’ve had too much, and will have to deal with the hangover.
:mad: - “Oh man, I hate hangovers.”
I’ve been on these boards for five years, and that’s what my introductory brochure to the SDMB mentioned, and I’ve always believed.

Ooh! We need a farting smiley!! I think a farting smiley would show even more derision than :rolleyes:. If you don’t like a post it would enable you to fart in its general direction.

If we did what everyone wished, there would be very little here.
I would recommend that if you don’t like something, skip over it.
For most everything here, someone’s loathe is someone else’s great love. Try to be a little more considerate of your fellow Dopers and let them have their stuff. They should let you have yours too, pretty much.
FTR, I do not see us removing any smilies any time soon. We may add more at some time in the future.
Please keep in mind that the smilies are mostly vB standard issue – with a few additions of our own – and they themselves have changed over the years as vB has changed. They could well change again, as the ways of vB are sometimes mysterious.

Geez, Tuba. Unbunch your panties a twist. It’s our board too. Some of us are publically expressing a certain preference or two. Others are joining in or disagreeing or even bringing up other things. It’s all been very civil. How’s that for showing consideration? Your amazement amazes me.

On re-reading this, I think my agressive tone may be a bit out of line. The points still stand, tho. None of us are demanding anything, simply expressing opinions as fellow board users.

Er, exactly how hard is it to add a smiley? Is it like some big, expensive, major project that you need to rewrite the board’s software for?
