Sneevil, come here. A word.

I agree with Freak, I wanna see if it’s possible.

I don’t know that I have any opinion on that, except to say I oppose any state sponsored/enforced religion. OTOH, doesn’t it make sense that a people, together, in one country have some sort of coherent set of values? Or do you advocate ‘everybody do their own thing’?

Ok, so who decides what those values are? I mean, aside from voting, which we already do, how do you think we should go about making one set of values for everyone to go by? A dictatorship?

We have laws. Those laws are decided by people who are elected by us. Why do you have a problem with this?

Yes, we have laws. We have laws against all sorts of thing that people do all the time, at an increasing rate. That was the topic of the original thread, bewailing what is wrong with society. You think the laws we have are sufficient to keep the society from deteriorating? I understand you are young, and don’t have the benefit of an historical perspective. What do you think of the state of our society? Apparently not much, as you are looking forward to moving to Sweden.

I am talking about values in an abstract sense-morality as a concept. I do not believe morality can be legislated. I have big problems with the religous right because of their activism on this-although I may agree with many of their stated values and beliefs.

I think this may have contributed to the outbreak of bad feelings- the title of that thread certainly would imply that was the topic, but as I read the actual OP it seemed the real topic was much more about the particulars of a certain case, and was not looking for a discussion of the more general issues you raised. So perhaps some people thought your contributions were not appropriate to what they thought the topic was.

Regardless of that, after 5 pages of this thread I’m still not sure of you point.

Is it (1)that you maintain, as a general principle, that a society which adheres to higher standard, accepted by all, will be more lawful and orderly than one which does not? -
or (2)that in addition to the above, there is one particular higher standard which is superior to all others? I haven’t found anything in your posts to really support more than the first option, but I think that based on past experience, many people when hearing such statements suspect a hidden agenda to promote the second option.
