Ah, good ol’ Molly Shannon is back as the host tonight. I look forward to that.
A rerun commercial already??? In a new show? It could at least have been the Weiner Juice, gosh.
I always liked Molly Shannon when she was on the show – good to see her hosting. I think it’s pretty good so far. The Mary Katherine Gallagher/A.I. bit was good, and the Penelope sketch cracked me up – who plays the role? She’s got talent. The fringe candidates bit had its moments…good and bad. :dubious:
Speaking of Molly Shannon, did anybody watch the SNL in the 90s special last Sunday?
That Mary O’Malley – or whatever the name was; the lady at the strip club – was that the same character who would say “Iluvit, Iluvit, Iluvit!!” while she kicked her legs? Anybody know what I’m talking about?
That was “Joyologist” Helen Madden.
Transcript of a “Pretty Living” sketch, in which Madden was a recurring character
So far, the flashback to Shannon’s crush on Lorne Michaels was amusing with all the 90’s slang and references, but I’m just waiting for the cartoon.
Sally O’Malley in the Bing was hilarious. “I call these my desert rose, because they feature… THE CAMEL TOE!” Darrell Hammond had Tony Soprano down, and the others had great make-up and really looked like their characters.
It’s as though this whole episode was conceived to annoy me. I liked Molly Shannon for maybe the first episode of her SNL career, and then the constant repitition of her characters made me loathe her. Hey, Molly’s going to yell a catchphrase. Whoo-hoo, that’s comedy. “Superstar!” “I’m FIFTY!” “I love it I love it I love it!” Gah.
Oh, and as someone that’s never been able to sit through an entire episode of AI, I really think the parodies are done to death. Unfunny AI parody as an excuse to showcase Mary Catherine Gallagher? Why doesn’t Lorne Michaels just come over and punch me in the kidneys?
Oh! And with all the amusing stuff Kristin Wiig has done, they decided to repeat the know-it-all one-upper character? Why?
I also thought Darrell Hammond’s Tony Soprano was WAY off. But that’s such a minor thing and I generally like him, so it wasn’t as nails-on-a-chalkboard as pretty much everything else in this episode.
I agree with ValerieBlaise - I thought he was doing Trump with a different wig.
I like Molly Shannon, but come on- in all the time she’s been off the show, she hasn’t come up with a new character or sketch idea- everything was a rehash. Maybe that’s what the show insisted upon, though.
I, personally, can’t stand most of Molly Shannon’s recurring characters, but I can’t fault the show for letting her do them last night: They were what people wanted to see, they put them in new contexts that they couldn’t have done back when Shannon was a cast member, and they were done pretty well considering they had to do them at all.
I’m guessing it’s either because
(1) Molly Shannon likes the character and requested to be in a sketch with her, or
(2) The writers are lazy. That character, while amusing for a minute or two, is so one-joke predictable that the sketch practically writes itself.
Still, there were plenty of things I liked about last night’s show. I liked the fringe candidates debate; Weekend Update had some good jokes; and, I know it was a cheap laugh, but I did giggle at Donald Trump’s ad for his “Black Anus” steaks. And I continue to believe that Amy Poehler is easily the MVP of the current cast.
P.S. to the world: Stop using “A. I.” to mean anything other than “Artifical Intelligence.” That’s what the letters have meant since long before that talent show came along. It throws me off, okay?
The opening with MKG and A.I. was the best part.
This was the first SNL I’ve watched for a long time. Just happened to be up. Amy Poheler made up as that man/woman Alfred E. Neuman looking presidential candidate was very creepy.
I’d never really seen Linkin Park before, they look old. That second song was good though.
Best part of the episode was CAMELTOE!
