SNL 5/16 - Will Ferrell/ Green Day

Anyone else watch this last night? I thought it was a pretty good season finale and loved all of the surprise guests. Some of my highlights:

  • The cold open w/ Bush and Cheney was fun. Always good to see those two characters together. Loved the bit about Cheney actually being dead for several days at one point.

  • Not sure why the recycled the old Wade Blasingame (no, not the ball player…the attorney at law!) commercial, but it’s a classic so whatever.

  • I’m a sucker for the Lawrence Welk bit w/ the girl group singing. The baby hands kill me every time.

  • Didn’t really care for the Charles Barkley bit w/ Mark, though the line "Brought to you by the creators of “Jeff” made me laugh for some reason.

  • Celebrity Jeopardy was fantastic as always and I loved that Tom Hanks played himself as having an IQ even lower than Forrest Gump’s. When he was caught in the dry cleaning bag I couldn’t breathe I was laughing so hard. Also enjoyed Norm MacDonald popping up out of nowhere as Burt Reynolds. Always fun.

  • Loved Weekend Update w/ Amy coming back for the finale. Some good jokes and got a big kick out of “Really?!”, especially comparing ASU’s acceptance rate to the Burger King Kid’s Club.

  • Ghost of Harry Caray and “Angel Bucks” was awesome.

  • The closing sketch w/ the big musical number was bizarre but I loved it. What song was that? So many guests involved in that bit…Anne Hathaway, Paul Rudd, Hanks, Maya Rudolph, Green Day. Great way to end the season.

  • I thought Green Day sounded like Green Day. Not that great, kind of bland.

“Goodbye Saigon” by Billy Joel. Considering the caliber of guest stars in the sketch, I’m surprised the Piano Man himself didn’t make an appearance!

Another great episode after Timberlake raised the bar last week. Shame the rest of the season wasn’t up to the standards of these two. Ah well.

Here’s hoping next year is half as good as the last two episodes.

ETA: I’m pretty sure this is only the second time they’ve done the Lawrence Welk show bit. Anne Hathaway’s episode (one of my favorites) was the first.

If you blinked you might’ve missed it, but “Burt”'s podium had his name as Turd Ferguson, which the Reynolds character has used in the past on CJ.

Overall, a very funny show (though I thought Weekend Update wasn’t as good as it could’ve been, except for the hilarious Harry Carey bit).

Damn, I missed seeing his name as Turd Ferguson. That is such a classic CJ bit.

Another minor, blink-and-you-miss-it joke on Celebrity Jeopardy: Tom Hanks doing a sibilance check (a callback to his role in one of the Wayne’s World sketches).

I agreed with everything you said but this:

I hate that sketch and it always goes on waaaay too long. I guess I wish they’d give Kristen Wiig something funny to do soon. They keep recycling her sketches and they just aren’t funny anymore.

Other than that, great show.

Ironically I thought the look and feel was perfect for a Welk sketch, though the writing sucked. Does Kristen Wiig do anything other than deformed and or insane “one joke and that one not funny” characters?

Celebrity Jeopardy is one of the best things to come out of SNL after the Mike Myers days. It never fails to kill me.

I’ll take Catch the Semen for 600, Trebek

Odd that Norm McDonald has two big gigs on NBC in one week, on two different shows two days apart, and both are doing his Burt Reynolds impression.

Your mom came out last night!

…Walked right into that one…

I think the baby hands bit is a love it or hate it situation. When she was popping the bubbles at the end, I was literally in pain from laughing so hard.

The tiny hands by themselves don’t really do it for me. It’s that plus the gigantic prosthetic forehead, the one messed up tooth and singing about eating roadkill amidst an otherwise quite earnest Welkian sister act.

I think I found it funny the first time. We’re on what? The 5th or 6th time, and it’s always the same. It’s not funny enough for me to still be laughing at it. Unlike Sean Connery making lewd comments about Alex Trebeck’s mother, which does get me every time.

Burt Reynolds was supposed to be the guy on each Celeb Jeopardy but then Norm McDonald got fired so they brought in Hammond as Sean Connery as the regular.

No, they have done it exactly one time before. I’m usually the first guy to start complaining when they do the same damn character over and over again (Will Ferrel cheerleader bit, anyone?) but this is not a case of that. (Yet.)

Really? Then it just FEELS like I’ve seen it 5-6 times, which is maybe a worse indictment.

I had the impression that it was a Will Ferrell clip/rerun episode. I definitely remember the Lawrence Welk/tiny hands thing being on earlier. Live season finale? Anybody got the straight dope?
